Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia
A resilient family is a family that is capable of survival, overcoming difficult challenges, and then grow stronger (Walsh, 2006). Cultural identity is one of the factors that play a role in forming family resilience, because in order to build the understanding and values of family resilience one needs to build it in accordance to local culture. The purpose of this study is to analyze the factors that build family resilience in Indonesian families, especially Batak Toba families. The measurement tool used in this study is Walsh Family Resilience Questionnaire (WFRQ) to measure family resilience (α = .879), The Responses …

Fostering Pediatric Resilience In Outpatient Primary Care: An Evidence-Based Practice Improvement Project, Susan C. Schreiber, Tami Bland, Allyson Neal
Graduate Publications and Other Selected Works - Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
Introduction: Resilience is not a singular trait. Techniques can be learned and/or promoted to increase one’s capacity for resilience. These skills can attenuate both short- and long-term detrimental impacts to a child’s stability, development, and health outcomes. For best outcomes, resilience should be promoted throughout all stages of neuropsychological and physical development. Methods: An educational intervention on resilience techniques was provided to advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs). Pre- and post-intervention APRN knowledge data was collected. The APRNs then integrated resilience techniques into clinical practice during a school semester. Immediately after an APRN implemented resilience techniques into a patient encounter, the …

The purpose of this study is to determine Doctor of Pharmacy students’ emotional responses and coping precipitated by the COVID-19 pandemic, and the influence of media use, working status, and participation in hobbies. …
Afterlife: Exploring And Accepting Ideas Through Children's Literature, Kiley Vandevelde
Afterlife: Exploring And Accepting Ideas Through Children's Literature, Kiley Vandevelde
Honors Projects
This project is a written and illustrated book for children to assist with the grieving process by exploring different cultural representations of the afterlife. Death is an inescapable part of the human condition. Belief in an afterlife can help children retain a connection to the deceased and can be a useful tool for healing. While very young children (age four to five) inherently believe in existence after death, this decreases after the age of ten. This book targets children aged seven to ten and explains the benefit to believing in an afterlife. It explores different ideas surrounding the afterlife and …

Spanish English Literacy: Critical Pedagogy, Positive Coping And Transformative Self-Identity, Sara Soledad Garcia
Teacher Education
This chapter reports on a study that focuses on a special agent of change: the classroom teacher and their bilingual skills in preparation for the challenge of teaching in Spanish and English. The new generation of practicing bilingual educators and those presently preparing to teach, have lived in a context that, although restricted by language policies for schooling, have developed coping mechanisms and maintain skills in both languages, Spanish as a native language and English as the language of schooling. A goal for this study is to support a change for a more humanistic approach for the education of linguistic …

Nicu Experiences Of Adoptive Parents & Desired Preparation, Catherine J. Howe
MSU Graduate Theses
Parents who have newborns admitted into the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) have multiple experiences and emotions. Additional social and emotional layers are experienced by adoptive couples when the infant they wish to adopt needs specialized care. This research study was completed to find out what adoptive parents experience in the NICU and what preparation would have been helpful. The method included semi-structured, open-ended interviews with seven couples who adopted a newborn at a Midwestern adoption agency within the past three years and had a NICU experience. The results described adoptive couples’ experiences on the unit, bonding and attachment, fears …
Mind Over Matter: How A Dancer’S Mind Affects The Physical Body, Kayla Johnson
Mind Over Matter: How A Dancer’S Mind Affects The Physical Body, Kayla Johnson
Honors College Theses
This thesis is an exploration of how a dancer’s mind can affect its physical body. Undoubtedly, there is a strong connection in every human between their mind and their body, but for an artist whose entire career depends on the ability of their body to create movement, there must be extra emphasis placed on their mental health care. Dance is just as mentally demanding as it is physically. To begin this project I collected research articles relating to injury, anxiety, self-confidence, body image and eating disorders performed on dancers. I noticed throughout my research that there was a lack of …

Toward A Model Of Hardiness Development: The Effect Of Hope On Hardiness, Chin Heng Low, Paul Heng Leong Lim, Kevin Koh
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
Hardiness has been proven to help with the management of psychological stress. It is an important state-like personality dimension that individuals can develop to cope with stressors. However, there is currently insufficient understanding on why hardiness develops in people. Through an exploratory study based on 55 undergraduate university students who worked on an international consulting project in return for grades, this research examines the relationship between individuals’ hardiness components of commitment, control and challenge and hope components of willpower and waypower. It is found that individuals’ hope components may be positively related to specific hardiness components. This bears considerable theoretical …

To Engage Or Disengage: The Impact Of Coping Strategies, Sex, And Stress History On Cortisol Reactivity Among Urban Adolescents, Madeline Curzon
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Stress affects people daily and can prove maladaptive to mental health if chronic or acute. Effective coping responses may mitigate the negative effects of intense or prolonged stress through physiological processes such as HPA axis activity. Previous research has found one specific coping dimension, engagement/disengagement, to be predictive of cortisol reactivity in response to lab-induced stressors. Sex and stress history also contribute to the relationship between coping and cortisol reactivity. However, these processes are not as well understood in adolescent populations and have not been explored across different types of stressors. The present study explored the relationship between coping and …

An Examination Of Coping Strategies And Intent To Leave Child Welfare During The Covid 19 Pandemic, Francie J. Julien‑Chinn, Colleen C. Katz, Eden Wall
Publications and Research
Child welfare work is inherently difficult, and child welfare agencies are known to experience high rates of turnover. We sought to expand the existing literature on intention to leave one’s child welfare agency and commitment to child welfare work through examining the coping mechanisms of frontline workers. Having and utilizing healthy coping mechanisms has proved beneficial to child welfare workers in previous research. In this paper, we examine specific coping mechanisms identifed in the Comprehensive Organizational Health Assessment and how they were associated with child welfare workers’ intent to leave their agency and their commitment to remain in the field …
Resilience And Health Outcomes Of Sexual Minority Middle-Aged And Older Adults, Christi L. Nelson
Resilience And Health Outcomes Of Sexual Minority Middle-Aged And Older Adults, Christi L. Nelson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
While research on lesbian, gay, and bisexual (hereafter referred to as sexual minority) middle-aged and older adults has increased over the past decade, there is still a critical need for more research on the health and resilience in this growing subpopulation. Research has provided evidence that sexual minority adults have an increased risk of negative health outcomes when compared to heterosexual adults. Research has also demonstrated possible resilience in sexual minority middle-aged and older adults; however, few studies have measured resilience in middle-aged and older adults. Gaining a better understanding of resilience in sexual minority adults may help identify modifiable …

Introduction: It is well established that youth with chronic conditions experience elevated levels of stress; the manner in which they respond to or cope with this stress is likely to impact both health and psychosocial outcomes. The current study examined stress and coping in youth and young adults with spina bifida (SB) using the response to stress questionnaire-SB version (RSQ-SB; Connor-Smith et al., 2000).
Methods: Data were collected as part of a camp-based psychosocial intervention for children (ages 7–13), adolescents (ages 14–19), and young adults (ages 20–38) with SB. Participants completed the RSQ-SB as well as questionnaires assessing demographics …
Food Insecurity In The Agrarian Household: An Analysis Of Gendered Identity, Conjugal Dynamics, And Coping In Northwestern Benin, Rosalind Ragetlie
Food Insecurity In The Agrarian Household: An Analysis Of Gendered Identity, Conjugal Dynamics, And Coping In Northwestern Benin, Rosalind Ragetlie
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Food insecurity represents an enduring challenge for subsistence farmers in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). While gender has been identified as an important determinant of food insecurity in other SSA contexts, this has not been a focus of research in Benin. This dissertation examines how gender shapes food insecurity within the agrarian household by examining the household as a place where the broader structural forces that influence food insecurity and gender play out at a micro-level. I take a mixed-methods approach, drawing on community-level focus groups (n=12), semi-structured interviews (n=40), and a quantitative survey (n=600).
The findings reveal that while food insecurity …

“How Do I Make Them Understand And Then Why Would I? ” Exploring The Impact Of Disclosure And Support On Coping Perceptions Among Nurses With Their Families, Madeline Katherine Witt
Theses and Dissertations
Nurses play a central part of healthcare in modern Western medicine, often taking on various roles and acting as liaisons in a multitude of situations. Especially in regard to the most recent global health crisis, COVID-19, more attention has been paid to the ways in which nurses handle the stress of the job. With the establishment of Cutrona and Suhr’s (1994) five categories of social support and Lazarus and Folkman’s (1987) Transactional Model of Stress and Coping, research has been able to address the role of social support in the coping process; however, little attention has been paid to the …

Policy Development: Stress Management And Critical Incident Debriefing, Karen Loraine Hasie Rowland
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Abstract Workplace stress and associated disorders (occupational burnout, compassion fatigue, secondary traumatic stress, critical incident stress, posttraumatic stress disorder, etc.) disproportionately affect healthcare workers, especially those working in critical care and emergency environments. The financial cost of stress related after-effects experienced by health care workers exceeds $191 billion each year and includes the cost of associated decreased quality of patient care, missed diagnoses, medical errors, and sentinel events leading to patient disablement or mortality. Mental health interventions such as stress management education and critical incident debriefings have been proven effective in reducing workplace stress and building personal resilience. A gap …

Investigating Individual Difference Among Workplace Incivility And Its Organizational Outcomes In The Chinese Context, Yuejia Chen
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The prevalence of workplace incivility is on the rise. As a workplace stressor, workplace incivility is linked with detrimental outcomes for both individuals and organizations, such as increased intention to turnover, reduced job performance, and job dissatisfaction. The current study gains fresh insights about how targets of incivility interpret and respond to this uncivil behavior as an occupational stressor.
The purpose of this study is to investigate the relationship between targets’ perceptions of workplace incivility and its organizational outcomes (i.e., job performance and turnover intention), as moderated by personality traits (i.e., neuroticism, extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness) in the context of China. …

Coping With Medical School: An Interpretive Phenomenological Study, Sebastian C K Shaw, John L. Anderson
The Qualitative Report
Anecdotal evidence suggested that hopelessness and helplessness (HH) were often reported by undergraduate medical students. It is known that medical students are more susceptible to high levels of stress and depression than other student groups. There is currently concern about suicide rates in students and high drop-out rates in junior doctors. But what can be said of HH within this population? This study was aimed at eliciting medical students’ experiences of HH. An interpretive phenomenological approach was adopted. Participants were recruited from a single medical school. Loosely structured, audio-recorded interviews were carried out. Recordings were then transcribed verbatim, then underwent …

Developing A Movement-Based Group For High Schoolers With Anxiety During Covid-19, Samantha Harding
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
The COVID-19 pandemic has been associated with negative mental health outcomes, including increased rates of anxiety among adolescents. Adolescents with social-emotional disabilities experience additional challenges adapting to disruptions in routine and coping with feelings of anxiety caused by the pandemic. While effective treatments for reducing symptoms of anxiety exist, a large proportion of adolescents with clinical or sub-clinical levels of anxiety lack access to such treatment or do not seek out treatment on their own. Schools are seen as an ideal setting to implement programs that teach adolescents effective coping skills, however, the pandemic has drastically altered school settings and …

Manuscripts, Articles, Book Chapters and Other Papers
Negative life events, such as the death of a loved one, are an unavoidable part of life. These events can be overwhelmingly stressful and may lead to the development of mental health disorders. To mitigate these adverse developments, prior literature has utilized measures of psychological responses to negative life events to better understand their effects on mental health. However, psychological changes represent only one aspect of an individual's potential response. We posit measuring additional dimensions of health, such as physical health, may also be beneficial, as physical health itself may be affected by negative life events and measuring its response …
