Subjects Of Economy: Social Documentary Poetics And Contemporary Poetry Of Work, Michelle B. Gaffey
Subjects Of Economy: Social Documentary Poetics And Contemporary Poetry Of Work, Michelle B. Gaffey
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Although the term “documentary” originated in film and photography studies, it has been used to describe a range of compositional and research strategies in discussions of twentieth and twenty-first century poetry as well. A study of such documentary poetics, however, requires us to distinguish between documentary poetics in general and social documentary poetics in particular. To illustrate this distinction, I discuss five contemporary books of poetry and photographs: C.D. Wright’s and Deborah Luster’s One Big Self: Prisoners of Louisiana, Cynthia Hogue’s and Rebecca Ross’s When the Water Came: Evacuees of Hurricane Katrina, Chris Llewellyn’s Fragments from the Fire: …

Labor unions have played an important role in New York City politics for decades--with the 2021 mayoral election approaching, will they be able to motivate their membership to vote for the candidate they endorse, or will their members vote for whomever they want without taking into account who their union recommends? Construction worker fatalities and injuries are a growing problem across the U.S. And for a myriad of factors, death rates are higher in the Southern and Western U.S. than in other regions. Over 1,000 construction workers died from injuries received on the job in 2019, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, many of whom are Latino workers. Now, advocates and workers are demanding reform after years of diminished regulation and little oversight that have cost numerous lives. (End)Zones And (Out)Fields Of Production: Contemporary Conditions Of Labor And Artistic Critique, Stephanie G. Anderson
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
In a 2013 exhibition publication titled It’s the Political Economy, Stupid!, John Roberts made the observation that “Over the last ten years we have become witness to an extraordinary assimilation of art theory and practice into the categories of labor and production.” Whereas once art claimed for itself a critical capacity in relation to the larger system of capitalist domination by its status as a putatively ‘autonomous’ sphere of production from which it leveraged its difference and critique, today it is largely acknowledged that there is no longer any such ‘outside’ to be aspired to. If, in the recent …

Fed Up, Desperate And Daring Enough To Unionize, Suzannah C. Cavanaugh

This is a long-form story that outlines the hazards of restaurant work that predated the pandemic, among them wage theft, racism and sexual harassment. The story focuses on three restaurant workers pushed to unionize after Covid-19 worsened working conditions by cutting take-home pay and creating new safety hazards for employees. Legislation and employer resistance are stacked against them, but for many workers organization is the only solution.

Sustainable Development Of The Service Sector: Theoretical-Methodological Approach, Bekhzod Hamidovich Kuziboev
Sustainable Development Of The Service Sector: Theoretical-Methodological Approach, Bekhzod Hamidovich Kuziboev
Central Asian Problems of Modern Science and Education
The services sector is one of the leading sectors of the economy. Today the share of this sector in the gross domestic product and employment is more than 70% in world economy. The service sector began to be studied in the 20th century as a separate discipline and field. Therefore, the theoretical and methodological foundations of this area are not yet perfect. In particular, most of the research in the field of services to date has focused on the socio-economic aspects of it. The purpose of this study is to improve the theoretical and methodological foundations of not only socio-economic …

Aspects Of The Becker Brewing And Malting Company Of Ogden, Utah: A Study Of Labor, Prohibition, And Finance, Jason Neil
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
Embedded within the economic narrative of the nineteenth and twentieth century American West lays the rich, but frequently forgotten, history of brewing in Utah. While most businesses in Utah centered on agriculture, railroads, and mining, the breweries of Utah also played a significant role in the industrial and economic development of the region. One of the largest and most significant of these breweries was the Becker Brewing and Malting Company of Ogden, Utah. Founded in 1892, this company deeply affected the brewing industry until its dissolution in 1965. Many of the original records kept by the company still exist and …

The Role Of Women Within The Mine Wars, Kirsten Hylton
The Role Of Women Within The Mine Wars, Kirsten Hylton
West Virginia University Historical Review
This paper examines the impact that the Mine Wars had on women who lived within the mine camps directly affected by labor unrest. While women were usually not the ones on the front lines of the Mine Wars, they still were impacted by and involved with the action. Just like the men of the camps, women were evicted from their homes, brutalized by mine guards, and were forced to change their lives. Assuming that the events of the Mine Wars were perceived in the same way by both men and women would be leaving out a large portion of the …
Japanese Economic Aggression, Organized Labor’S Resistance, And The Path To World War Ii, Thomas Miles
Japanese Economic Aggression, Organized Labor’S Resistance, And The Path To World War Ii, Thomas Miles
West Virginia University Historical Review
This paper examines economic aggression from the Japanese fishing fleet beginning in 1936 and the response from organized labor in America prior to the famous attack on Pearl Harbor. The focus of this is research is primarily from the perspective of American labor, drawing heavily on the Voice of the Federation newspaper, which was a publication owned by the Maritime Federation of the Pacific. The US government was aware of encroachment of Japanese floating canneries in 1936, but took little action against Japan in order to avoid worsening tensions between the two nations. However, in 1937 Harry Stuhr, the head …

“We Developed Solidarity”: Family, Race, Identity, And Space-Time In Recent Multiethnic U.S. American Fiction, Kimber L. Wiggs
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In Diversity in Families, sociologists Maxine Baca Zinn, D. Stanley Eitzen, and Barbara Wells assert, “At a very personal level, families are crucial shapers of who we are and what our opportunities have been and will be” (xvii). The novels in this dissertation—Octavia Butler’s Kindred (1979), Karen Tei Yamashita’s Tropic of Orange (1997), and Rosaura Sánchez and Beatrice Pita’s Lunar Braceros 2125-2148 (2009)—examine the role of family in the development of individual identity and the practice of social justice. These authors foreground characters from various ethnic backgrounds and depict how the characters form new, multiethnic families. My dissertation explores the …

An Examination Into Teacher Hiring: Preferences, Efficiency, Stability, And Student Outcomes, Katherine Stewart Georgia State University
An Examination Into Teacher Hiring: Preferences, Efficiency, Stability, And Student Outcomes, Katherine Stewart Georgia State University
AYSPS Dissertations
This dissertation studies teacher hiring practices, an avenue to potentially raise teacher quality which has not been studied extensively. I analyze three aspects of the teacher hiring process, which, if improved, could promote education quality: the principal hiring decision, the teacher application decision, and the effects of information on teacher behavior and market outcomes in the teacher labor market. The first two are empirical studies utilizing administrative data from an urban school district, and the last is a laboratory experiment.
Education is a labor focused enterprise where outcomes are largely determined by teacher quality, so hiring the most productive teachers …

Dissolving Reality: An Endless Domestic Landscape, Hanzhang Lai, Phang Lim
Architecture Thesis Prep
This thesis explores how the exponential growth in communication technology is changing the way we interact with the tangible and intangible spaces. The invasion of the public into the private, the collective into the domestic, the work into the leisure, and the ability to be constantly connected wirelessly have caused a dissolution of the physical domestic space. The domestic space has lost its value of privacy and intimacy and the boundary between the binaries will be no more. The gap between “the control” and “controlled” has widened and productive workers will be oppressed to be even more productive under the …
