Undergraduates And Stress, Mahra Crone
Undergraduates And Stress, Mahra Crone
Honors Projects
America is facing a serious mental health crisis, which may be an effect of increased chronic stress. Students, in particular, are vulnerable to this hazard as most face a moderate to extreme amount of stress. The programs which colleges and universities have put into place are outdated. Ineffective treatment of mental health crises leads to disastrous consequences. The present study analyzed the effects of major and grade level on stress level and sources of stress for undergraduate universities at both a large, public university and a small, private college. The author found that a student’s grade level and choice of …
Sink Hollow Volume 8
Sink Hollow
To make a magazine, we seek contrast and even the tension of contradiction.
We hunt for the words that defy experience, and experiences that defy words alone but must be captured by clever poetic contraptions and literary devices that violate the architecture of language and definitions in order to teach us what we can't know by conventional means. We crave the ingenious art of using words to drag meaning outside the semantic containment of words. There's contradiction! This is the skill of infusing words with the power to evoke emotion and connection. The work of the poet, the artist, the …

Open Educational Resources
In Fall 2019, the Computational Neuroscience class at Bates College collaborated to begin an open textbook. Eight students across three majors collaborated to present the content they were learning to students who were similar to themselves. This project serves both pedagogical and social goals. By writing for fellow students, we leveraged the power of teaching for learning. By bringing together students of diverse academic backgrounds, we leveraged the power of peer instruction. Finally, by writing in the open, students not only brought their best work forward, but are working to contribute to an open knowledge environment that democratizes information. This …
Educating For Civic-Mindedness: Examining Student Impacts Of Academic Programs Of Community And Civic Engagement In Higher Education, Laura L. Minor
Educating For Civic-Mindedness: Examining Student Impacts Of Academic Programs Of Community And Civic Engagement In Higher Education, Laura L. Minor
All Dissertations
Within the last decade, colleges and universities in the United States have embraced the “community engagement” model to fulfill their public missions and prepare their students for work within increasingly complex and diverse communities. The number of academic majors and minors in community engagement-related fields has multiplied across the country, yet there is little literature that examines their impact on students, and whether or not they are producing uniquely engaged citizens upon graduation. This quasi-experimental, quantitative study explores the effects of one such program on students at Central Connecticut State University. Graduates who have completed a minor in Community and …

Changes In Students’ Mental Models From Computational Modeling Of Gene Regulatory Networks, Joseph Dauer, Heather E. Bergan-Roller, Gretchen P. King, Mckenzie Kjose, Nicholas J. Galt, Tomáš Helikar
School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Background: Computational modeling is an increasingly common practice for disciplinary experts and therefore necessitates integration into science curricula. Computational models afford an opportunity for students to investigate the dynamics of biological systems, but there is significant gap in our knowledge of how these activities impact student knowledge of the structures, relationships, and dynamics of the system. We investigated how a computational modeling activity affected introductory biology students’ mental models of a prokaryotic gene regulatory system (lac operon) by analyzing conceptual models created before and after the activity.
Results: Students’ pre-lesson conceptual models consisted of provided, system-general structures (e.g., activator, repressor) …

Using Critical Race Theory To Examine Race And Racism In Social Work Education, Ebony Nicole Perez
Using Critical Race Theory To Examine Race And Racism In Social Work Education, Ebony Nicole Perez
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Race and racism have proven to be a core concept of U.S. society that impacts People of Color through a set of challenges which have created and maintained enduring racial disparities and inequities. The social work profession has a time-honored commitment to working with and advocating historically marginalized populations. Social workers work with individuals, groups, and communities to help assess needs, strengths, support networks, respond to crisis situations, and advocate for social justice. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to investigate the experiences of undergraduate social work educators (BSWEs) who teach to encourage the development of students’ knowledge, …
Non-Traditional Hispanic Women Students In Post-Secondary Education, Melanie C. Zollner
Non-Traditional Hispanic Women Students In Post-Secondary Education, Melanie C. Zollner
Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs
Today, the Hispanic population is the fastest growing minority in the United States. As a minority-majority Hispanic state, it is imperative that New Mexico addresses the needs of this population, particularly education, as it creates opportunities for growth. Historically, the Hispanic population experienced limited access to education, which impacted their access to income and occupation, making them expendable.
Throughout history, women have faced inequality. In the United States, women had to overcome several obstacles to have access to education and be allowed to enroll in post-secondary education (Hagedorn, Womack, Vogt, Westebbe, & Kealing, 2002). It must be noted that the …

“Are We Getting There? Human Services Community College Students’ Experiences With Evidence Based Practice (Ebp) In Field Placement”., Anya Y. Spector, Krimili Infante
Journal of Human Services: Training, Research, and Practice
Community college students’ experiences with Evidence Based Practice (EBP) in the field placement are not well understood, despite the importance of EBP for students’ future social work academic training and job performance. This longitudinal, qualitative, exploratory study examines journal entries of second year community college students at two time points, in the beginning and at the end of the field placement, where students reveal the types of EBP skills and experiences that they engage, as well as their perceptions of their experiences along the way. This study helps to shed light on the experiences with specific interventions and practices that …
Case-Based Asynchronous Interactive Modules In Undergraduate Medical Education., Tatiana Villatoro, Katherine Lackritz, Joanna S Y Chan
Case-Based Asynchronous Interactive Modules In Undergraduate Medical Education., Tatiana Villatoro, Katherine Lackritz, Joanna S Y Chan
Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Faculty Papers
Undergraduate medical education traditionally consists of 2 years of lecture-based courses followed by 2 years of clinical clerkships. However, over the past couple decades, undergraduate medical education has been evolving toward non-lecture-based integrated curriculums, requiring a collaborative curriculum. Additionally, e-learning platforms have become efficacious and essential to delivering education asynchronously to students. At Thomas Jefferson University, the Pathology and Obstetrics and Gynecology departments collaborated to create a pilot series of case-based asynchronous interactive modules to teach gynecologic pathology in a clinical context, while interweaving other educational components, such as evidence-based medicine, clinical skills, and basic sciences. The case-based asynchronous interactive …

The Creation And Application Of A Validated Tool To Measure The Impact Of Mobile Standing Desks On Undergraduate Students' Sedentary Time, Marc S. Moulin
The Creation And Application Of A Validated Tool To Measure The Impact Of Mobile Standing Desks On Undergraduate Students' Sedentary Time, Marc S. Moulin
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
Undergraduate students (UGS) are highly sedentary, which may elevate their health risks. However, before the effectiveness of an undergraduate sedentary time (ST) intervention can be assessed, accurate and applicable measurement tools need to be identified. The overall purposes of this research program were to first, evaluate the validity of two weekly ST questionnaires compared with criterion data in homogenous samples of UGS (Studies 1 and 2); and second, to measure the effect of providing UGS with mobile standing desks for one-week (Study 3) and one-month (Study 4), while also exploring students’ perceptions about using the desks. Each study built on …
