An Evaluation Of School Culture And Its Impact On Student Achievement, Jeremy Johns-Klein

Dissertations

The purpose of this evaluation was to examine if a school’s culture impacts student academic achievement due to initial low attainment on state assessments and low graduation rates. The data collected provides both quantitative and qualitative information using a teacher survey, a teacher focus group, administrator interviews, and school achievement data. The results of the study indicate a need for stronger trust between teachers and administrators, increased professional development to support teaching and learning, and improved partnerships with the parents/guardians of the students. An additional result is that the school’s culture for learning can impact the achievement levels of the …

The Wall Of Silence: Disrupting Kairotic Spaces, Victoria Jaye Nov 2019

The Wall Of Silence: Disrupting Kairotic Spaces, Victoria Jaye

Writing Center Analysis Papers

Every class has a balance of kairotic space where teachers have power and students accept that power within the confining space of the classroom. Power defines our world as well as our relationships to one another; without power there is no control which can be key to governing a classroom. Disruption of this power dynamic can open dialogue between teachers and students that might not have existed otherwise because students feel confined to the strictures binding their power creating a wall of silence. Using brainstorming and reflecting as well as peer tutoring, I experimented with breaking down the wall of …

Assessment Of The Seismic Vulnerability Of West Tennessee School Buildings, Christine Maurice Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

West Tennessee is a seismically active area. However, West Tennessee has been building structures long before strides in earthquake engineering. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) developed a procedure, Rapid Visual Screening (RVS) Method, to quickly determine if a structure is likely to suffer major damage from earthquake or not by documenting aspects of the structure and its site and then calculating a score for the building that indicates the seismic vulnerability of the structure. A more sophisticated government software called Hazus-MH was developed to produce results with five damage categories: None, Slight, Moderate, Extensive, and Complete. It costs more …

Writing helps me make sense of the worlds and come closer to my true self. This piece is journeying from my own struggles of a Vietnamese, queer, immigrant teacher to accept who I am as a writer. In addition, writing this piece helps me get closer to decademizing academic writing in higher education.

Feasibility And Efficacy Of A Recess-Based Combined Fitness Intervention On Cognition And Academic Performance In Elementary School Children, Christine St Laurent Jul 2019

Feasibility And Efficacy Of A Recess-Based Combined Fitness Intervention On Cognition And Academic Performance In Elementary School Children, Christine St Laurent

Doctoral Dissertations

Youth physical activity and fitness have been reported to influence cognition and academic related outcomes. Despite the potential benefits of muscular fitness, few intervention studies have examined the impact of an intervention that has incorporated both cardiorespiratory and muscular fitness training on cognition and academic performance in children. Previous studies have mainly been implemented either during the school day or immediately after-school. Although recess may be an ideal time to promote physical activity because it does not compete with other academic demands, it has been an understudied setting. Therefore, the purpose of this dissertation project was to examine the feasibility, …

Increasing Engagement And Academic Performance Of Children With Autism Spectrumdisorder And Attention Difficulties: Do Fidget Spinners Help?, Melanie Byrne B.S. Jun 2019

Increasing Engagement And Academic Performance Of Children With Autism Spectrumdisorder And Attention Difficulties: Do Fidget Spinners Help?, Melanie Byrne B.S.

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Children with varying exceptionalities including ADHD, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and other learning disabilities often struggle with attention deficits. The persistence of alternative non-behavioral approaches in classrooms to address this deficit presents the need for more research and education about these interventions. Specifically, the fidget spinner is a newer intervention which currently has no empirical evidence to support its use in the classroom setting. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of fidget spinners on increasing engagement and academic comprehension in a whole classroom environment. A multiple baseline across participants design was used with six children with varying …

Kathryn Glenn Natural Environments At School.Pdf, Kathryn Glenn

Kathryn Glenn

When children exert cognitive energy at school, they can become mentally fatigued.  Contact with the natural environment can restore attention, leaving children mentally refreshed and better able to concentrate.  Database searches using keyword phrases yielded 18 peer-reviewed articles showing links between the natural environment and school children, and scanning the references of these articles yielded 3 more relevant articles.  Natural environments on school campuses positively correlated with attention restoration, stress reduction, and academic performance in school children, with a few exceptions.  These benefits tended to be greater when children spent longer durations of time in natural environments, when there was …

Learning To Plan And Be Organized: Executive Function Skills For Kids With Ad/Hd, Tanya Lindquist

Children's Book and Media Review

Staying organized and completing projects can be difficult for children diagnosed with AD/HD, but that does not mean it is impossible. This book provides many different ideas and step-by-step instructions for elementary school-age children to learn how to be more organized and establish helpful habits. Different chapters deal with different aspects of children’s lives, such as waking up and getting ready for school, cleaning their room, and planning school projects. Fun activities are included for the children, and a special note is written for parents in order to better help families implement the strategies taught.
