Purpose: The purpose of this explanatory mixed-methods study was to identify the political styles of female superintendents and their school board members as perceived by superintendents. A host of national reports and media (e.g., Chu & Posner, 2013) in the past decade have ranked Utah last or near last in terms of women being in positions of decision making and leadership, and women in Utah politics is foundational to this issue. Raising awareness of the reasons why this is the case is critical to social change efforts focused on improving the representation of women in political roles within the state. With particular reference to works by Tukano and Desana authors, this paper examines some of the cultural and historical factors that underlie the unique propensity of indigenous peoples of Northwest Amazonia to publish their narrative histories in books. Jointly written by a knowledgeable elder and a younger literate amanuensis, each book in Coleção Narradores Indígenas do Alto Rio Negro series contains the origin narratives, myths, and recent history of a particular group, told from the point of view of one of its clans. At present, professional nursing does not benefit from strong policy development and advocacy influence in the United States. This project focused on CA nursing policy development and advocacy influence deficit among new members of a statewide professional nursing association. There are nearly 457,000 licensed registered nurses (RNs) in CA (BRN, 2019) and around 3.8 million RNs in the United States (AACN, 2019) making CA RNs twelve percent of the national nursing workforce. Religion has had a significant effect on voter participation in the United States and continues to change with society as it continues to develop into a more diverse environment. The “God Gap”, a coined term used to describe the more religiously attentive an individual is the more likely they are to vote Republican. The mid‐twentieth century “collective behavior” school asserted that (1) collective behavior—the actions of crowds, movements, and other gatherings—had distinct dynamics; (2) such action was often “nonrational,” or not governed by cost‐benefit calculation; and (3) collective behavior could pose a threat to liberal democracy because of these features. While this tradition fell out of scholarly favor, the 2016 election has given us empirical reasons to revisit some elements of collective behavior approaches. We argue for three key orienting concerns, drawn from this tradition, to understand the current political era. First is a focus on authoritarianism and populism, particularly among those who …

Political events may constrain bodies, bodily autonomy, and agency. They also offer opportunities to embody resistance. Research suggests that the 2016 presidential election may have been a catalyst for people to select a long-acting birth control method that could “outlast a presidency.” The Intrauterine Device (IUD) is a form of highly-effective, reversible, and long-lasting birth control, and after November 2016 IUD insertions increased by 22%. This thesis explores the motivations of people in Georgia who chose to get an IUD after the election of anti-choice politicians in 2016 and 2018, through an ethnographic account of their birth control decision-making process. …

This article meditates on the Christian command to love the neighbor as yourself by focusing on how both Jacques Derrida and Søren Kierkegaard have read this command. I argue that Derrida, failing in his faithfulness to Kierkegaard, makes a mistake when he includes this command in the Greek model of the politics of friendship in his Politics of Friendship. Such a mistake is illumined by Kierkegaard’s understanding of the neighbor in this command from Works of Love because this understanding helps to develop Derrida’s vision of a democracy and politics that resists the hegemony of the masculine and remains …

In the service of Justice Brett Kavanaugh’s confirmation to the United States Supreme Court, the President of the United States (and Republican Senators) both misappropriated and further eroded the already compromised concepts of due process and presumption of innocence. This Essay uses the prominent “Central Park Five” case in which five teenagers of color were wrongly convicted of a white woman’s widely-publicized beating and rape to expose the President’s disparate use of the presumption along race and status lines. We love to hate these boogeymen. When the societal narrative creates these invisible boogeymen, people can pour their rage against sexual abuse into these faceless antagonists. At the same time, the enraged survivors and protectors avoid conflicts with family, neighbors, colleagues, and social acquaintances who might actually commit or enable sexual abuse. We can dodge sticky questions regarding how a churchgoer, a judge, or an Ivy Leaguer could have committed a heinous act. In recent years, controversies surrounding curriculum and instruction about Muslims and Islam in U.S.

public schools have become more common. In some instances, Muslim American parents and students

have challenged representations that spread and reinforce denigrating stereotypes and misconceptions

about their faith and co-religionists. In a seemingly growing trend, however, some non-Muslim students

and parents are objecting to courses and programs due to perceived favorable or neutral treatment of the

Islamic faith. Such cases, controversies and curricula illustrate how popular anxieties surrounding the

integration of immigrant populations, particularly Muslims, are increasingly infecting classrooms,

school districts and communities. They also provide …
