The Performance Tradition Of The Medieval English University: The Works Of Thomas Chaundler, Thomas Meacham Dec 2019

The Performance Tradition Of The Medieval English University: The Works Of Thomas Chaundler, Thomas Meacham

Early Drama, Art, and Music

Contrary to previous scholarship, which has claimed that university drama did not occur at the English universities before the Tudor period, Meacham argues that there was a vibrant tradition of performance throughout the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries. He suggests an earlier tradition has not been recognized because, in addition to the false assumption that medieval pedagogy cannot support such activity, the full range of medieval performance practices or "texts," beyond the traditional play text, have not been considered. This book takes as its focus one of the last medieval university plays, Thomas Chaundler’s Liber apologeticus de omni statu humanae naturae …

Gender In The Making: A Pragmatic Approach To Transgender Experiences In Lowland Tropical America, Magda Helena Dziubinska, Diego Madi Dias Dec 2019

Gender In The Making: A Pragmatic Approach To Transgender Experiences In Lowland Tropical America, Magda Helena Dziubinska, Diego Madi Dias

Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America

Based on long-term fieldwork experiences among both the Guna in Panama and the Kakataibo in Peruvian Amazonia, this article proposes to examine the transgender phenomenon in indigenous America. Making use of the notions of performance and status, we argue that (trans)gender should be understood via two complementary dimensions: at the same time that it is manifested in a set of expressive practices, it is also inscribed in a specific system of social organization. Adopting a pragmatic approach that emphasizes the relational, aesthetic and performative dimensions of gender, the article analyses the ways through which two Amerindian peoples negotiate and inhabit …

Higher Muscle Tissue Oxygenation When Exposed To Hypobaric Hypoxia Than Normobaric Hypoxia, Christina N. Angeli, Robert J. Shute, Dustin R. Slivka

Journal of Human Performance in Extreme Environments

There has been recent debate on the potential difference in physiological response between exposure to simulated altitude (normobaric hypoxia) and terrestrial altitude (hypobaric hypoxia). Purpose: To determine the difference in the physiological response to normobaric and hypobaric hypoxia during exercise. Methods: Eight recreationally active subjects (27 ± 5 y old, 73.1 ± 7.4 kg body weight, 170.6 ± 6.7 cm height, and 19.3 ± 9.2 % body fat) completed incremental cycling exercise to volitional fatigue in three separate environments: normobaric normoxia (NN; 350 m), normobaric hypoxia (NH; simulated 3094 m), and hypobaric hypoxia (HH; 3094 m). Heart rate, blood oxygen …

On The Right Note, Carolyn Baird

Tutor's Column

This is a cross-disciplinary comparison of violin playing and tutoring writing. As a violinist and a tutor, I have found that my mindset and way of tutoring is greatly influenced by my experience as a violinist. There are many valuable parallels from the violin world that can be used as tutors in how we approach students, how we critique their writing, and how we think about tutoring in general. I hope to pull out those similarities to provide some insights on how to improve giving feedback in a tutoring situation.

Evaluating The Performance Of Female Faculty Members In The Department Of Educational Policies And Kindergartens In The College Of Education At King Saud University Using The Method Of Reflexive Feedback (360 Degrees): A Field Study, Balqees Al-Daghestani

Al-Balqa Journal for Research and Studies البلقاء للبحوث والدراسات

The aim of this study is to draw the attention of decision-makers especially in higher educational institutions, focusing on King Saud University, to an objective method of performance evaluation, namely (feedback) (360). This method does not allow favoritism and personal relation to interfere with the results of evaluation. Unlike traditional evaluation methods, (feedback) (360) does not depend solely on the President’s evaluation of the academic staff. The method is based on a five-dimensional questionnaire developed and used by Testa, 2002. The evaluation covered seven areas of performance: trust, ethics, efficiency, quality of education, quality of classroom management, orientation towards the …

A Suite In Six Attitudes: Subverting (And Succumbing To) The Textual Bias, Leanna Smithberger Dec 2019

A Suite In Six Attitudes: Subverting (And Succumbing To) The Textual Bias, Leanna Smithberger

Kaleidoscope: A Graduate Journal of Qualitative Communication Research

This essay challenges textual dominance in academia by using music composition and performance as a method and representation of inquiry. I argue that this is a form of tactical resistance since it plays within the system, meeting requirements but challenging expectations. The resulting text from the project satisfies academic requirements for a written text, but subverts expectations as to the form that text should take. I provide the musical score and a discussion of the creation and performance of the composition to show how even when attempting to abandon textualism, we are still constrained by it. Despite this, I present …

Functional Morphology And Environmental Impacts On Migration-Relevant Performance Measures In Amphidromous Goby Fishes, Kelly Marie Diamond Dec 2019

Functional Morphology And Environmental Impacts On Migration-Relevant Performance Measures In Amphidromous Goby Fishes, Kelly Marie Diamond

All Dissertations

Animals engage in migrations for diverse reasons and over a variety of time periods. Moving between habitats introduces novel challenges that migrating organisms must overcome in order to reach their intended destination. Such challenges include attaining resources required for survival while also avoiding becoming a resource for other organisms. Another challenge is that environmental structure can act as a barrier between habitats. Amphidromous goby fishes provide an advantageous system in which to study several aspects of migration-related performance. As adults, these fishes live and lay eggs in freshwater streams. Upon hatching, larvae are swept downstream to the ocean. At the …

Development Of A Mix Design Adjustment Method For Fiber Reinforced Concrete And Super High Performance Concrete Based On Excess Paste, Joe Malloy

Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The main objective of this study was to develop a mix design adjustment method for Fiber Reinforced Concrete (FRC) that would maintain appropriate workability while improving hardened concrete performance. A literature review was conducted to examine existing methods for adjusting mix designs to account for fiber introduction. It was found that while increasing fine aggregate and cement paste content can make up for lost workability with the addition of fibers, no rational mix design adjustment method is available. Reference mix designs from the Nevada Department of Transportation and the Nebraska Department of Transportation were used, and this study focused on …

Arkansas Education Reports

This edition of the OEP Awards highlights schools in Arkansas based on student growth on the ACT Aspire exams in Mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA). This is a departure from prior awards, which were based on student proficiency.

We choose to focus on student growth for these OEP awards because we think it is a better reflection than proficiency rates of how the school is impacting students. Growth is calculated at the student level, and essentially reflects how much a student improved his or her score from the prior year compared to what was predicted based on prior achievement …

An Exploration Of Contextual Factors Of Weight-Based Discrimination Against Business Leaders, Ellen Hermann Lynch Nov 2019

An Exploration Of Contextual Factors Of Weight-Based Discrimination Against Business Leaders, Ellen Hermann Lynch

Dissertations

Two-thirds of the adult population of the United States are considered overweight (Ogden, Carroll, Kit, & Flegal, 2013) and are susceptible to weight-based discrimination in the workplace (Rudolph, Wells, Weller, & Baltes, 2009). The weight-based discrimination experienced by business leaders is relatively unknown. The present research used Leader Categorization Theory (Lord & Maher, 1991) as a framework to examine the extent to which a business leader’s weight is associated with their perceived leadership qualities and effectiveness in two studies. The first study isolated the relationship between the base rate of weight in an organization and the assumed weight of the …

On I/O Performance And Cost Efficiency Of Cloud Storage: A Client's Perspective, Binbing Hou Nov 2019

On I/O Performance And Cost Efficiency Of Cloud Storage: A Client's Perspective, Binbing Hou

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Cloud storage has gained increasing popularity in the past few years. In cloud storage, data are stored in the service provider’s data centers; users access data via the network and pay the fees based on the service usage. For such a new storage model, our prior wisdom and optimization schemes on conventional storage may not remain valid nor applicable to the emerging cloud storage.

In this dissertation, we focus on understanding and optimizing the I/O performance and cost efficiency of cloud storage from a client’s perspective. We first conduct a comprehensive study to gain insight into the I/O performance behaviors …

Envisioning Utopia: The Aesthetics Of Black Futurity, Sydney Haliburton Nov 2019

Envisioning Utopia: The Aesthetics Of Black Futurity, Sydney Haliburton

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This paper examines the ways in which black women are addressing and healing from trauma through acts of envisioning the future. The ways in which space, connectivity, and gesture function throughout Solange Knowles' "Cranes in the Sky" music video exemplifies the ways in which "performance of futurity [is] embedded in the aesthetic" (Muñoz 87), Kelela Mizanekristos' "Take me Apart" evokes a queer black vulnerability through a conceptual "hauntology," and Tierra Whack's "Whack World" utilizes black camp as a creative and expansive tool to create worlds that act as a vessel for meaning making. These contribute to an analysis of how …

Performance Optimization In Body Sensor Network Using Self Calibration Tdma Algorithm, M. Mohammed Mustafa, V. Parthasarathy

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

The paper focuses on variation in performance characteristics, such as the packet delivery ratio, throughput, jitter, and the delay, varies when the queue length has been changed. The results proved that there is no impact on the jitter when the queue length was varied. The packet delivery ratio and the throughput are increased when the queue length are increased by 10. Hence, the self- calibrating TDMA algorithm can be used to implement the body sensor network and queue length can be kept at 20 to be optimized for good throughput and packet delivery ratio.

Heart Rate Variability, Neuromuscular And Perceptual Recovery Following Resistance Training, Andrew A. Flatt, Liam Globensky, Evan Bass, Brooke L. Sapp, Bryan Riemann

Department of Health Sciences and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

We quantified associations between changes in heart rate variability (HRV), neuromuscular and perceptual recovery following intense resistance training (RT). Adult males (n = 10) with >1 year RT experience performed six sets to failure with 90% of 10 repetition maximum in the squat, bench press, and pull-down. Changes (∆) from pre- to immediately (IP), 24 and 48 h post-RT were calculated for neuromuscular performance markers (counter-movement jump peak power and mean concentric bench press and squat velocity with load corresponding to 1.0 m∙s−1) and perceived recovery and soreness scales. Post-waking natural logarithm of the root-mean square of successive …
