Information literacy is a relatively new concept in Turkey and is most accessible to English Language Learners. This article-format dissertation identifies the information needs and habits of English Language and Literature majors at a major Turkish university, discusses the development of an online intervention to teach information literacy to these students, and tests the efficacy of using Turkish subtitles to teach information literacy skills to these English majors. Article 1 surveyed students majoring in English Language and Literature about their attitudes towards library usage and sources. This investigation sheds light on the teaching practices of Queens College (QC) faculty in Business. It identifies the Business faculty’s teaching support needs in order to develop ideas for improving Library services to them. This report is the result of research conducted under the guidance of Ithaka S+R, and in accordance with Office of Regulatory Compliance procedures at QC. Using a grounded theory approach to qualitative research, the investigators conducted in-person audio-recorded semi-structured interviews of seven full-time QC faculty who teach Business courses. Effect Of Virtual Reality On Learning Motivation And Academic Performance: What Value May Vr Have For Library Instruction?, Brady D. Lund, Ting Wang

The research on whether Virtual Reality (VR) has a positive effect on student learning and engagement is limited. This study aims to examine what impact VR has on student learning motivation and performance. The study conducted by Wang (2017) revealed that VR had a marginally positive impact on student scores and a strong impact on students’ learning engagement. It indicates that VR provides a small improvement in academic performance and a large improvement in student engagement. The application of VR in libraries focuses on providing the VR tools to learn subjects in STEM and history fields. For one-off instructional settings, …

The present study is a phenomenological case study exploring how a group comprised of teaching librarians, faculty, and students experienced library instruction at the research site, Florida International University (FIU), in the context of the Framework for Information Literacy (IL) for Higher Education (Association of College and Research Libraries, 2016). The present study uniquely addresses a gap in the literature on library instruction and IL by using interviews with three diverse participant groups within the same setting. This fall the Alexander Campbell King Law Library at the University of Georgia turned library orientation for incoming students into a Fest, and opened the event up to the entire law school community. The idea for a fest was a collaborative one, with examples from other library orientation programs as well as UGA’s staff resource fair, our experiences at conferences like CALICon, and even a AALL poster session contributing to the final event design and deployment. This essay is the result of an ongoing collaboration among an English faculty member (Kimberly Emmons), a humanities research librarian (William Claspy), and a special collections director (Melissa Hubbard). We work at a private research university, with an undergraduate population of approximately five thousand students. Our campus is best known for its scientific, medical, and engineering research and innovation. Accomplish- ments in the arts and humanities are equally robust, but undergraduates in these fields nevertheless find themselves justifying their interests to a more pragmatic and professionally oriented peer group. Through the lens of critical librarianship, librarians are becoming increasingly involved in social justice, civic engagement, and human rights issues. This paper examines the collaboration between a subject librarian and a faculty member in an assignment that engaged in Public Sphere Pedagogy (PSP), a teaching strategy with the goal of increasing students’ sense of civic agency and personal and social responsibility by connecting their classwork to public arenas; and project-based learning, wherein students develop a question to research and create projects that reflect their knowledge, which they share with a select audience.

In Fall of 2017, the Sprague Library began offering workshops for citation management software in response to the increasing number of 1-on-1 appointment requests. While workshops covering various topics had been offered in the past, attendance had been low. Casting this precedent into the wind, we offered additional workshops (using anecdotal evidence from library instruction classes, research appointments, and conversations with faculty to guide the topics), and targeted graduate students and faculty as our audience. Evaluation Of Sources: A New Sustainable Approach Using Argument Analysis And Critical Thinking, Sharon Radcliff, Elise (Yi Ling) Wong

An area of information literacy instruction that has increasingly gained attention is evaluation of sources. Moving away from the checklist approach (timeliness, relevancy, bias, credibility, authority), this session describes a new approach incorporating critical thinking questions and training for students on analyzing arguments using the Toulmin method, which students apply to evaluating articles and to detecting “myside” (confirmation) bias in their own writing.
This approach was used at two institutions, a 2-unit information literacy course at CSU East Bay and several sections of an English Composition course Saint Mary’s College and incorporated a “flipped classroom” design with much of the …

The Discovery and User Experience Team conducted an open-ended survey designed to gather information about how Primo works within the context of the daily work of patron-centered staff and librarians. We felt that this information and feedback was important because it provided the only avenue in which reference and instruction librarians could give direct input to the Alliance about how to improve our current discovery interface. The survey asked reference and instruction librarians about their specific experiences with Primo with the goal of identifying ways that the Discovery and User Experience Team could better support these users.

Information literacy skills, including critical thinking and problem-solving skills, are imperative for academic, personal, and professional success. Unfortunately, many students graduate only to be more daunted than ever by the vast amount of information available to them and increasingly rely on convenience over quality in their information-seeking behaviors. This study hoped to address this by increasing students’ motivation for engaging in an online information literacy module. Using self-determination theory (SDT) from the field of motivation, motivationally-supportive modules were designed to support students’ feelings of autonomy and competence and ultimately grades on their final research assignment. Teaching visual literacy isn’t always part of the bigger information literacy ‘picture’. “How to Frame a Picture” is a poster presentation that endeavors to help instruction librarians integrate more visual literacy instruction into their information literacy curriculum through the use of digital humanities tools. Each ACRL Visual Literacy standard is mapped to a curated selection of digital tools and sample projects, and attendees will have the opportunity to engage with the ‘toolbox’.

This poster outlines how visual literacy instruction was integrated into an undergraduate course on archival and primary source research at the University of Dayton. This chapter outlines some of the ways in which the integration of games and gamified activities directly impact student motivation in the classroom. It discusses how games naturally align with the principles of both motivational design and backward design and offers an overview of some of the free and open source options that can assist instruction librarians in creating their first games. It also includes examples of games that the authors have themselves created and tools that they have customized to enrich student engagement in one-shot instruction sessions.

This article discusses the development and delivery of a three-week asynchronous online course on Jesuit history, education, and the Ignatian Pedagogical Paradigm (IPP) for librarians working in Association of Jesuit Colleges and University (AJCU) institutions. Created by two instruction librarians and one instructional designer from a pair of AJCU institutions, the course explores incorporating the IPP -- a contemplative learning model -- into a one-shot, single class library instruction session. The purpose of this quantitative, quasi-experimental, exploratory study was to create a metaliteracy course for online Ed.D. students and determine if there was a relationship between the Metacognitive Strategies for Library Research Skills Scale, Metaliteracy Pretest, and Metaliteracy Posttest. Library literature is lacking on assessment of information literacy skills as determined by a new term, metaliteracy, and the goals and objectives associated with this new term.
