Bystander Intervention Opportunity Among Adolescents: Demographic, Psychosocial, And Behavioral Associations, And Changes Over Time, Abigail Elizabeth Beaulieu

Master's Theses and Capstones

The purpose of this study was to examine how demographic, psychosocial, and behavioral factors are associated with bystander opportunity among adolescents, and how bystander opportunity changes across one year. Participants for the study consisted of 1,322 adolescents who took an initial survey (Wave 1) and a survey one year later (Wave 4). Participants were 50.3% (n=658) female, 14.1% (n=182) identified as a sexual minority, and 88.9% (n=1140) identified as white, non-Hispanic, 11.1% (n=143) identified as non-white or Hispanic, with the mean age of 15.7 (SD = 1.2) years at Wave 1. Bystander opportunity was examined by measuring six individual opportunities. …

The Impact Of A Brief Bullying Bystander Intervention On Depressive Symptoms, Aida Midgett, Diana M. Doumas Jul 2019

The Impact Of A Brief Bullying Bystander Intervention On Depressive Symptoms, Aida Midgett, Diana M. Doumas

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

The authors evaluated the impact of a brief bullying bystander intervention (STAC) on depressive symptoms among high school students using a randomized controlled design. Results of path analyses provided support for a mediational model in which the intervention was associated with an increase in sense of school belonging, which in turn was associated with a reduction in depressive symptoms. The authors discuss implications for high school counselors and counselors in other settings working with adolescents.

The Impact Of A Brief, Bullying Bystander Intervention On Internalizing Symptoms: Is Gender A Moderator Of Intervention Effects?, Diana M. Doumas, Aida Midgett, April D. Watts

Counselor Education Faculty Publications and Presentations

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of a brief, bystander bullying intervention on reducing internalizing symptoms among students (N = 65). Although witnessing bullying is associated with mental health risks, the majority of research on bystander interventions focuses on the impact of these programs on school-wide bullying reduction rather than improved emotional outcomes for those trained to intervene. Results indicated high school students trained in a brief, bystander bullying intervention reported greater decreases in internalizing symptoms from baseline to a 3-month follow-up compared to students in a control group. Further, gender moderated intervention effects such that …

Experience Of Microaggressions: White Bystanders’ Physiological And Psychological Reactions, Alexandra K. Reveles May 2019

Experience Of Microaggressions: White Bystanders’ Physiological And Psychological Reactions, Alexandra K. Reveles

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

The negative impacts of discriminatory events to the physiological and psychological stress of the recipient has been thoroughly documented. However, there is little to no evidence about the impacts to bystanders of these events, particularly White bystanders. Psychological impacts may emerge through academic achievement, which has implications for educational institutions and their diversity initiatives. This study examined the impact of witnessing discriminatory events on academic achievement, biological markers of distress, and emotional distress.

Academic achievement was negatively impacted for participants in the microaggression and blatant racism conditions when compared to a control condition. Study participants also experienced negative emotional impacts. …

Disrupting Narrow Conceptions Of Justice: Exploring And Expanding "Bullying" And "Upstanding" In A University Honors Course, Jennifer Farley, Jennifer Gallagher, Katherine Richardson Bruna Jan 2019

Disrupting Narrow Conceptions Of Justice: Exploring And Expanding "Bullying" And "Upstanding" In A University Honors Course, Jennifer Farley, Jennifer Gallagher, Katherine Richardson Bruna

University of Nebraska Public Policy Center: Publications

The term "upstanding" encompasses actions and behaviors grounded in one’s defense of their own beliefs and others. While such broad application of the term has merit, from a critical education perspective it lacks direction. To efficaciously address injustice, upstanding action must go beyond one’s beliefs. A directional application of upstanding behavior, or the notion of "upstanding for justice," frames upstanding as action to address chronic social victimization via systems of oppression. In this article, we describe the development of a new heuristic to support students’ understanding of upstanding and detail the university honors course in which we used the heuristic …

An Exploratory Phenomenological Study To Investigate The Necessity Of An Athlete-Specific Bystander Intervention Program, Alexander Ian Gaits Hoffman Jan 2019

An Exploratory Phenomenological Study To Investigate The Necessity Of An Athlete-Specific Bystander Intervention Program, Alexander Ian Gaits Hoffman

All ETDs from UAB

It has been well established that college athletes are among the most at-risk student populations for engaging in heavy episodic drinking and other risky alcohol and drug use behavior including but not limited to risky sexual behavior. Despite this knowledge, to date there are no truly effective long-term education, intervention, prevention, or treatment programs. This is especially true for bystander approaches. Bystander interventions have shown effectiveness in decreasing sexual assaults and changing rape mythology, but there has not been much research on its effectiveness on alcohol and drug use. There is also a lack of knowledge and understanding on how …
