Design Of A New 3d‐Printed Joint Plug, Lobat Tayebi, Zhanfeng Cui, Hua Ye Nov 2019

Design Of A New 3d‐Printed Joint Plug, Lobat Tayebi, Zhanfeng Cui, Hua Ye

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

This paper introduces a kit of parts as a novel three‐dimensional (3D)–printed joint plug, in which each of the parts function cooperatively to treat cartilage damage in joints of the human body (e.g., hips, wrists, elbow, knee, and ankle). Three required and one optional parts are involved in this plug. The first part is a 3D‐printed hard scaffold (bone portion) to accommodate bone cells, and the second is a 3D‐printed soft scaffold (cartilage portion) overlying the bone portion to accommodate chondrocytes. The third part of joint plug is a permeable membrane, termed film, to cover the entire plug to provide …

Evaluation Of Lignin-Containing Photopolymers For Use In Additive Manufacturing, Jordan Sutton Aug 2019

Evaluation Of Lignin-Containing Photopolymers For Use In Additive Manufacturing, Jordan Sutton

Masters Theses

Generating high value products from lignin has been the goal of decades of research attempting to use the abundant byproduct of paper and biofuel production. Lignin’s complex aromatic structure means that it can potentially act as a feedstock for chemicals, fuels, and polymers. Bio-based polymers are a focus of discussion given the increasing concerns over polymer waste and renewability. For these reasons, efforts have been made to develop polymer products using lignin as an additive or a functionalized part of the polymer network. Photopolymerizable materials have been largely excluded from these works due to perceived difficulties understanding lignin’s photoactive structure. …

Application Of Micro-Scale 3d Printing In Pharmaceutics, Andrew Kjar, Yu Huang Aug 2019

Application Of Micro-Scale 3d Printing In Pharmaceutics, Andrew Kjar, Yu Huang

Biological Engineering Faculty Publications

3D printing, as one of the most rapidly-evolving fabrication technologies, has released a cascade of innovation in the last two decades. In the pharmaceutical field, the integration of 3D printing technology has offered unique advantages, especially at the micro-scale. When printed at a micro-scale, materials and devices can provide nuanced solutions to controlled release, minimally invasive delivery, high-precision targeting, biomimetic models for drug discovery and development, and future opportunities for personalized medicine. This review aims to cover the recent advances in this area. First, the 3D printing techniques are introduced with respect to the technical parameters and features that are …

Objective

Design of bioactive scaffolds with osteogenic capacity is a central challenge in cell-based patient-specific bone tissue engineering. Efficient and spatially uniform seeding of (stem) cells onto such constructs is vital to attain functional tissues. Herein we developed heparin functionalized collagen gels supported by 3D printed bioceramic scaffolds, as bone extracellular matrix (ECM)-mimetic matrices. These matrices were designed to enhance cell seeding efficiency of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as well as improve their osteogenic differentiation through immobilized bone morphogenic protein 2 (BMP2) to be used for personalized bone regeneration.

Methods

A 3D gel based on heparin-conjugated collagen matrix capable of …

Physical And Optical Properties Of Provisional Crown And Bridge Materials Fabricated Using Cad/Cam Milling Or 3d Printing Technology, Niranjan Joshi Jan 2019

Physical And Optical Properties Of Provisional Crown And Bridge Materials Fabricated Using Cad/Cam Milling Or 3d Printing Technology, Niranjan Joshi

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Objective: This study compared the physical and optical properties of provisional crown and bridge materials fabricated using CAD/CAM or 3D printing technology. Aim: To compare the biaxial flexural strength, microhardness, translucency parameter and gloss of provisional resin discs fabricated by milling PMMA blocks, versus two different resins printed using 3D printers. Hypothesis: There is no difference in the flexural strength, hardness, translucency and gloss of provisional resins fabricated by different digital technologies. Materials and methods: 90-disc shaped specimens for provisional resins were fabricated using a common digital file. These samples were equally distributed in three groups of 30 each. Group …

3d Challenges: Ensuring Competition And Innovation In 3d Printing, Michal S. Gal Jan 2019

3d Challenges: Ensuring Competition And Innovation In 3d Printing, Michal S. Gal

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

Not often does a general-purpose technology disrupt numerous markets and significantly affect social welfare. 3D printing is an exception. This technology promises to improve the quality of certain goods and to greatly increase the efficiency of their production processes. More importantly, it holds potential to reshape entire supply chains, including the design, manufacture, assembly, distribution, warehousing, and marketing of some goods, potentially even eliminating some parts of such chains. By changing the Coasean tradeoff, 3D printing also reshapes relationships between market players. This Article reviews the potential disruptive effects of 3D technology, analyzing the ways it impacts market dynamics and …
