Purpose: Single site ventricular pacing can result in electromechanical dyssynchrony and LV dysfunction. A classic pattern by strain echocardiography pattern analysis has been defined that specifically identifies electromechanical dyssynchrony that leads to LV dysfunction in other populations. Our purpose is to evaluate for the presence of the classic pattern and an association with LV dysfunction in asymptomatic young subjects with chronic pacing.
Methods: Inclusion criteria of non-surgical 2nd or 3rd degree AV block, normal cardiac anatomy, chronic ventricular pacing (> 95% of beats) and a quality 4-chamber apical image were met by 24 retrospective and 10 prospectively enrolled subjects. Global …

Disciplinary segregation (DS) is practiced in a variety of correctional settings and a growing body of research explores its subsequent effects among offenders. The present study contributes to this literature by analyzing the impact of short-term DS on violent infractions and community recidivism among a sample of inmates in Washington State. We assessed the impact of DS on these outcomes from deterrence and stain theory perspectives while controlling for social support variables such as visitations and correctional programming. Mentally ill offenders were excluded, as their abilities to make rational choices may be inconsistent with deterrence theory. Results show DS does …

We investigate charge ordering in the Holstein model in the presence of anisotropic hopping, tx,ty=1-δ,1+δ, as a model of the effect of strain on charge-density-wave (CDW) materials. Using quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we show that the CDW transition temperature is relatively insensitive to moderate anisotropy δ 0.3, but begins to decrease more rapidly at δ 0.4. However, the density correlations, as well as the kinetic energies parallel and perpendicular to the compressional axis, change significantly for moderate δ. Incremental Sheet Forming (ISF) is a freeform manufacturing method whereby a 3D geometry is created by progressively deforming a metal sheet with a single point tool following a defined trajectory. The thickness distribution of a formed part is a major consideration of the process and is believed to be improved by forming the geometry in multiple stages. This paper describes a series of experiments in which truncated cone geometries were formed using two multistage methods and compared to the same geometry formed using the traditional single stage method. Cracks in concrete structures can be indicators of important damage and may significantly affect durability. Their timely identification can be used to ensure structural safety and guide on-time maintenance operations. Structural health monitoring solutions, such as strain gauges and fiber optics systems, have been proposed for the automatic monitoring of such cracks. However, these solutions become economically difficult to deploy when the surface under investigation is very large. This paper proposes to leverage a novel sensing skin for monitoring cracks in concrete structures.
