Social Inclusion For Women Experiencing Homelessness, Jenna Richards Dec 2018

Social Inclusion For Women Experiencing Homelessness, Jenna Richards

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Background: People experiencing homelessness have been described as one of the most socially excluded groups in society due to their inequitable access to basic necessities (Everett 2009; Labonte, 2004). Particular consideration regarding social inclusion should be given to the unique vulnerabilities of sub-populations of those experiencing homelessness, such as women (Wesely & Wright, 2005) due to their increased rates of ‘hidden homelessness’ (Walsh et al., 2009) and experiences of violence and discrimination (Roschelle, 2017; Weiser et al., 2009). Community participation, particularly sports activities, have been cited as one method towards increasing social inclusion among people experiencing homelessness. However, differential access …

Point/Counterpoint: Is There A Case For Subsidizing Sports Stadiums?, Victor Matheson Dec 2018

Point/Counterpoint: Is There A Case For Subsidizing Sports Stadiums?, Victor Matheson

Economics Department Working Papers

In recent decades, governments have committed enormous public resources to subsidize construction of new stadiums, and the dollar value of taxpayer contributions for these subsidies continues to climb. Spending of taxpayer dollars includes both direct subsidies from state and local governments, as well as indirect subsidies from the use of tax-exempt bonds to finance construction. In granting stadium subsidies, governments claim that the stadiums are a public good that attracts tourists and businesses, thereby generating increased spending and job creation—benefits that flow to the community rather than to team owners. But do such benefits exist, and are they large enough …

Predicting Net Joint Moments During A Hang-Power Clean From Ground Reaction Forces With A Neural Network, Kristof Kipp, Matthew D. Giordanelli Nov 2018

Predicting Net Joint Moments During A Hang-Power Clean From Ground Reaction Forces With A Neural Network, Kristof Kipp, Matthew D. Giordanelli

ISBS Proceedings Archive

The purpose of this study was to develop a deployable neural network (NN) to predict hip, knee, and ankle Net Joint Moments (NJM) from Ground Reaction Force (GRF) data during the hang-power clean. Thirteen male lacrosse players performed the hang-power clean exercise at 70% of their one-repetition maximum while GRF and 3-D motion data were acquired. An inverse dynamics procedure was used to calculate hip, knee, and ankle NJM. Center-of-mass velocity, position, and power were calculated from the GRF data and used as inputs to a NN that predicted hip, knee, and ankle NJM. Predicted NJM from the trained NN …
