Local Peer-To-Peer Communication To Improve Demand Response In Residential Neighborhoods, Ryan Schwartz
Local Peer-To-Peer Communication To Improve Demand Response In Residential Neighborhoods, Ryan Schwartz
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Increased electricity production from intermittent renewables presents a challenge to utilities. Since the grid has little ability to store energy, fluctuations in solar and wind generation require either an increase in generation from expensive sources or a reduction of demand. Demand Response (DR) programs focus on the latter and are designed to increase grid flexibility by allowing grid operators to modify when or how customers use electricity. For residential customers, this typically means shedding load during periods of high demand through a central controller temporarily shutting off air conditioning (AC) compressors. This type of DR can cause spikes in demand …

Water Resources Professional Project Reports
The depletion of aquifers and reduced surface water flows are a growing concern for water managers. Educational outreach and incentives to promote conservation have been a growing trend over the past couple of decades in the arid Southwestern United States, including Albuquerque, New Mexico. Rebates for the installation of water efficient appliances and xeric landscape conversions are a couple of ways that water authorities incentivize their residential consumers to do their part at home to conserve water. This study involves a survey sent to a random sample of 2,215 Albuquerque Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority residential customers, with a 31% …
Thermal Performance Of Novel Natural Ventilation Apertures In A High- Performance Single-Family House, Martha Bohm
Thermal Performance Of Novel Natural Ventilation Apertures In A High- Performance Single-Family House, Martha Bohm
International Building Physics Conference 2018
Natural ventilation provides opportunities to reduce residential cooling load in summer, but increasing the operability of a façade potentially increases infiltration, which is already a source of significant winter heat load. Solving both of these simultaneously is challenging. The test building for this study was a prototype house containing a novel ventilator detail which allows for porosity for summer ventilation and a tight, insulated seal in winter. We aimed to determine whether the prototype had low enough infiltration and thermal bridging to be worthy of further laboratory testing and subsequent deployment in more buildings. The test home was blower door …

Using Music To Recognize And Regulate Emotions With At-Risk Adolescent Girls, Nicole Frederick
Using Music To Recognize And Regulate Emotions With At-Risk Adolescent Girls, Nicole Frederick
Expressive Therapies Capstone Theses
Emotional regulation can be difficult for adolescents with histories of complex trauma. Listening to music is a useful coping mechanism when dysregulated. However, some children with complex traumas struggle to find appropriate music for this purpose, let alone listen to it with the intention of emotional regulation. This capstone is a reflection of an individual music therapy session focused on emotional regulation. Previous research on this topic has proven the efficacy of music as a tool for emotional regulation, but none approached in the way presented here. The sessions were held in a residential school for biologically female students unable …

Accuracy Of Residential Water Meters In Response To Short, Intermittent Flows, John R. Chadwick
Accuracy Of Residential Water Meters In Response To Short, Intermittent Flows, John R. Chadwick
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
In this study, water meter accuracy in response to short, intermittent flows was tested. Burst flows have short durations (a few seconds or less), and occur at a variety of flow rates. For some types of meters, it is difficult to accurately measure short, intermittent flow rates. Depending on the meter type, an intermittent flow can result in either under-registering or over-registering of the actual throughput.
During the testing for this research, water was passed through meters for various time combinations, test setups, and flows. It should be understood that realistically, a household setting will not see burst flows occurring …

The Effects Of Surge Flows On Residential Water Meters, Ryan P. Weller
The Effects Of Surge Flows On Residential Water Meters, Ryan P. Weller
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
All residential water meters have published flow rates for which they will operate as designed. These specifications include a maximum operating flow rate, which is recommended not to exceed. However, there are situations which may cause a meter to flow above the maximum flow rate. This thesis explores what effect these surge flows have on residential water meters.
Twenty-one 5/8”x3/4” meters were tested in this study: three oscillating pistons, six nutating disks, nine ultrasonic, and three electromagnetic. Testing was done at the Utah Water Research Laboratory using a gravimetric test bench specifically designed for residential water meter testing.
The results …
