Classrooms On The Frontier: Integrating Original Research Into Lectures, Matthew D. Meng, Lucas Rentschler
Classrooms On The Frontier: Integrating Original Research Into Lectures, Matthew D. Meng, Lucas Rentschler
Journal on Empowering Teaching Excellence
The role of an academic is often spread across two main areas: researching and teaching. Although some argue that the scarcity of time, energy, and commitment precludes the ability to do both well, and are therefore substitutes, we argue that these roles can be complementary. That is, by incorporating original research into the classroom, several benefits can be gleaned by both faculty and students. We feel that if done correctly, a professor’s research and teaching can mutually benefit, as well. To illustrate and support this argument, we have included two specific examples of using original research to teach relevant concepts …

A History Of Civilization In 50 Disasters, Emilee Bell
Children's Book and Media Review
A History of Civilization in 50 Disasters throws together the fates of a variety of countries through the light of massive global disasters. The book explores the effects of volcanoes, hurricanes, earthquakes, and more, halfway around the world from where they occurred and months after the initial damage was done. Readers will dive a little deeper into the small yet impactful disasters that inevitably occur when human society clashes with nature, from famine to plague epidemics. 50 Disasters even includes zany episodes like a tank of molasses exploding in tenement neighborhoods in the dead heat of summer. From BC to …

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa
Background: The uptake of findings from sexual and reproductive health and rights research into policy-making remains a complex and non-linear process. Different models of research utilisation and guidelines to maximise this in policy-making exist, however, challenges still remain for researchers to improve uptake of their research findings and for policy-makers to use research evidence in their work.
Methods: A participatory workshop with researchers was organised in November 2017 by the Academic Network for Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights Policy (ANSER) to address this gap. ANSER is a consortium of experienced researchers, some of whom have policy-making experience, working on …
A History Of Medicine In 50 Discoveries, Emilee Bell
A History Of Medicine In 50 Discoveries, Emilee Bell
Children's Book and Media Review
Beware of whiplash as you track the evolution of medicine across the globe from the ice age to 2016. Remedies are lost and rediscovered during the rise and fall of empires; unsavory research begets groundbreaking health practices; knowledge is stolen, borrowed, given, distorted, and built upon through flurries of epidemics, religious mania, and superstition. The book shows a glimpse behind the Chamberlen Family shroud of secrecy that hid nothing less than the original forceps, passed down from generation to generation of highly successful birthing doctors in the 1600s. Readers will learn of an Italian study to the coast where a …

Sam Visits The School Library, Cynthia Frazier
Children's Book and Media Review
Sam is excited to visit the library today. He will return the book he checked out last week and pick out a new book from his elementary school library. He and his classmates have the opportunity to research their own topics on the library computers. They get to choose the book they want to read at home and learn that some books are about facts (nonfiction) and some books tell stories that aren’t true (fiction). Some of the students like graphic novels and others read e-books or listen to audiobooks.

Breaking Through The Echo Chamber: Teaching Students To Use Technology For College Research And Global Citizenry, Kaitlin Drake
Capstone Projects and Master's Theses
Preparing high school students for college level courses is vital to their success in higher education. Information literacy and digital literacy are necessary skills for college students in order to conduct their research for their classes. My own research was a compilation of scholarly articles and books focused on digital literacy, information literacy, and the issues surrounding these terms to understand what today’s students need in the classroom to succeed as young researchers. Search engines like Google operate under a facade of being an unbiased source. In reality, they are a for profit company whose search results go through an …

Exploring Identifiers Of Research Articles Related To Food And Disease Using Artificial Intelligence, Marco Ross
Faculty of Applied Science and Technology - Exceptional Student Work, Applied Computing Theses
Currently hundreds of studies in the literature have shown the link between food and reducing the risk of chronic diseases. This study investigates the use of natural language processing and artificial intelligence techniques in developing a classifier that is able to identify, extract and analyze food-health articles automatically. In particular, this research focusses on automatic identification of health articles pertinent to roles of food in lowering the risk of cardiovascular disease, type-2 diabetes and cancer as these three chronic diseases account for 60% of deaths (WHO, 2015). Three hundred food-health articles on that topic were analyzed to help identify a …

Journal of International Agricultural and Extension Education
The contribution of agricultural universities to long-term food security in developing countries is widely acknowledged. The extent to which these universities in each country are helping students develop the requisite competence to meet employment needs is unknown. The purpose of this study was to explore Haitian faculty members’ perceptions of student competence at graduation. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 37 lecturers who taught at five of the major agricultural universities in Haiti. The results of this revealed that (a) the employment conditions for university graduates were challenging; (b) faculty did not believe it was important for their students to graduate …

A Sociological Evaluation Of A Large Team Science Project: The Iutah Experience, K. Taylor Dean
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Many contemporary scientific research projects are composed of large numbers of researchers working together to provide solutions to social issues that affect our society. In an attempt to understand and address these issues, projects have been implemented where researchers from a wide variety of disciplines come together and collaborate. As this research includes a variety researchers, it requires a unique approach. Questions such as how to make these projects as effective as possible, how to properly evaluate these projects, and how to gauge the quality and success of these projects need to be answered.
These are directly addressed in this …

The Journal of Extension
Intercept surveys are a tool Extension educators can use to capture local data quickly and with minimal cost. We used intercept surveys at city farmers' markets to test the efficacy of food safety signage. From our experience with the intercept survey process, we identified a set of best practices that can benefit other Extension educators interested in developing and implementing this type of research.

Evaluation Of Food Insecurity In Adults And Children With Cystic Fibrosis: Community Case Study, Sarah E. Toevs, Tiffany A. Robb
Public Health and Population Science Faculty Publications and Presentations
Advances in the care and treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF) have led to improved mortality rates; therefore, considerably more individuals with CF are living into adulthood. With an increased number of CF patients advancing into adulthood, there is the need for more research that surrounds the aging adult CF patient. It is important to conduct research and collect results on the aging CF population to help better prepare the CF patient, who is dealing with the heavy treatment and financial burden of their disease, build autonomy and increase their quality of life. Of note, research has found that social, behavioral, …

Smiles, Sighs, And Nods: The Power Of A Personal Narrative, Camille Sleight-Price
Writing Center Analysis Papers
As a writing tutor and composition instructor, each time I work with a student I am meeting and getting to know a stranger through their writing. Although each student comes to sit next to me with their own background, topics of interest and insecurities, in each case I get to accompany them on the journey of meaning-making through the processes of research and composing. This paper highlights one such instance of meaning-making with a student. It suggests that this meaning-making is not just about developing students’ academic skills like research, critical thinking and composition, but is an opportunity as a …

The “Boatloads” Bible Study: A Report On The Spiritual Growth Resulting From Participation In A Small Group Bible Study, Abigail Brewer
The Kabod
Developed in January 2018, the “Boatloads” Bible study series sought to encourage members of a college life group in Lynchburg, Virginia, to grow spiritually by studying the power of God in ten passages of Scripture involving boats. At the end of the semester, members of the life group were asked to complete an anonymous survey about their experience in the Bible study. To analyze how the “Boatloads” Bible study affected spiritual growth in the lives of its attendees, Abigail Brewer, one of the leaders of the life group, created a two-part survey with ten statements and five questions. Using a …
