Forestry and Natural Resources Faculty Publications
Background: Many forests within the southern Appalachian region, USA, have experienced decades of fire exclusion, contributing to regeneration challenges for species such as oaks (Quercus spp. L.) and pines (Pinus spp. L.), and threatening the maintenance of oak-dominated forests in the future. While the use of prescribed fire as a forest management tool is increasing within this region, there remains a lack of information on the potential role of wildfire. A wildfire within the Daniel Boone National Forest, Kentucky, USA, provided an opportunity to investigate how wildfire affected forest vegetation response.
Results: We examined the effects of fire …

The Relationship Between Polychronicity And Social Networks: A Mixed-Methods Study Of Research And Development Professionals, Fabiola Bertolotti, Elisa Mattarelli, Janet Dukerich
Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity
How do knowledge workers interact with their colleagues when organizations increasingly ask them to work on multiple activities, projects and working spheres simultaneously? Given the importance of social networks for individual and organizational success, in this study we explore the relationship between individual preferences for engaging in multiple tasks simultaneously (individual polychronicity), the perception of the organization’s demands in terms of engaging in multiple tasks simultaneously (organizational polychronicity), and centrality in instrumental networks. Adopting a mixed-methods approach, we collected data from knowledge professionals in a research and development (R&D) unit. Our results show that both individual and organizational polychronicity were …
Scientists With And Without Managerial Responsibilities: How Managerial Training Affects The Perception Of Job Satisfaction, Jamie Humphries
Scientists With And Without Managerial Responsibilities: How Managerial Training Affects The Perception Of Job Satisfaction, Jamie Humphries
Business Administration Dissertations
Frequently scientists are promoted into positions that require them to assume management responsibilities without preparative training for a successful transition into management or other leadership roles. The movement into non-scientific roles may adversely affect the satisfaction of scientifically trained members of the organization, especially if they lack prior managerial training. Undergraduate science curricula do not introduce the basics of leadership skills, and therefore, scientists are first introduced to the concepts of management when delegated management responsibilities. Few scientifically focused organizations provide management training before the individual's transition to their first management role. Those organizations providing training seldom introduce appropriate levels …
Marion County, Oregon Integration Of School Emergency Preparedness, Mitch Sechler
Marion County, Oregon Integration Of School Emergency Preparedness, Mitch Sechler
CUP Undergraduate Research
Collaboration between schools and emergency managers is paramount in addressing the whole community approach to emergency management for increasing preparedness (FEMA, 2011). As every disaster is local, a unified and collaborative approach should be taken to ensure schools are not a hindrance but rather an asset for preparedness, response and recovery efforts. Schools must have ownership and accountability for ensuring they are prepared for emergencies. Additionally, local emergency management agencies with their capabilities, capacity and knowledge must take action in response to the opportunity to build partnerships and expanded their efforts to create a resilient community.

Characterization Of Botrytis Cinerea From Commercial Cut Flower Roses And Evaluation Of Current Crop Management Practices, Melissa Muñoz
Characterization Of Botrytis Cinerea From Commercial Cut Flower Roses And Evaluation Of Current Crop Management Practices, Melissa Muñoz
All Theses
Botrytis cinerea Pers. is a necrotrophic fungal pathogen that infects over 235 different plant species around the world. In cut flower roses, B. cinerea causes gray mold disease which leads to large economic losses during greenhouse production and in the post-harvest environment. Disease symptoms are often not visible during the production stage but are observed after storage and/or transportation. Fungicide applications are the primary strategy for gray mold management. However, fungicide resistance has been observed in several crops around the world, resulting in lack fungicide efficacy. Cultural practices such as plant nutrient management, cultivar selection, and crop sanitation are also …
Examining Emergent Systems Management Strategies In Overseas Operations, Kristofer Hawbaker
Examining Emergent Systems Management Strategies In Overseas Operations, Kristofer Hawbaker
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
Stadler, Mayer, and Hautz (2015) believed that most global companies did not possess the right management capabilities to make overseas movement profitable. Businesses must manage a bevy of internal and external organizational and process interdependencies to achieve success globally (Dynes, 2008), and these organizational processes have become increasingly more complex and adaptive (Anderson, 1999; McKelvey, 2001; Stacey, 1992; Wheatley, 1999). Today’s business leaders still develop reductionist solutions to solve complex problems despite this type of thinking's practical limitations (Menkes, 2011). Comstock (2016) foresaw emergent management as a necessity in the current era, which requires organizations to unify around information flows …

Managing The Rapid Urban Growth For Cities In Transition Countries, Binak Beqaj, Ylber Limani, Driton R. Kryeziu
International Journal of Business and Technology
Through political transition, socio-economical trends of cities as urban areas contributed to huge movements of population from rural to urban areas or from small urban areas toward big urban areas, making them bigger, under the rapid growth. Those cities have faced:
- Overloads with number of citizens,
- Lack of adequate infrastructure and
- Creativity deficiency for drafting and implementing urban development vision.
Consequently, the question is what qualitative life do cities offer when considering abovementioned suppositions related to rapid urban growth?
In general, for cities under rapid development, experts and authorities have not sufficiently succeeded to develop proper methodologies to neutralize chaotically …

Ddas Suggested Training Uses: Management Training, Hd-Aid
Global CWD Repository
Increasingly, managers in HD are management specialists with little or no field experience. If so, they usually delegate responsibility for training and operational needs to another person, often an "Ops Manager". The manager or Ops Manager will be in charge of all training and/or refresher training, so they should read the training suggestions for deminers, paramedics and field supervisors as well as those given here.
Because the accident database is a collection of reports covering events when things did not go as planned, the examples drawn from it are usually "negative" - what not to do, rather than what to …

Field supervisors or managers should also read the suggested training needs for deminers because they will often be in charge of the deminers' training and/or refresher training. When they have any training concerns, they must report this in writing to the Senior Management in order to avoid censure if accidents result from inadequate training.
Because the accident database is a collection of reports covering events when things did not go as planned, the examples drawn from it are usually "negative" - what not to do, rather than what to do. They can be useful to explain the need for rules. …

Why Do We Learn What We Learn? The Intersection Of Leadership And Learning In Aviation Environments, Kadie Mullins
Kadie Hayward Mullins
Why do we learn what we learn? Teach what we teach? Train how we train? Largely, decisions regarding instruction and training in aviation environments are dictated by leadership. Industry CEOs beliefs on professional development, organization culture inspired by leadership, and the instructors’ personal leadership philosophies create specific learning schema while legislation, credentialing agencies, and public policies provide mandates surrounding licensing and certifications. This paper will explore the contexts and concepts in which learning and leading intersect and the impacts of those intersections on learner outcomes and instructional planning. Exploring pertinent historical, societal, philosophical, and psychological factors that guide instruction and …

Scientific, Legal, And Ethical Foundations For Texas Water Law., Gabriel Eckstein, Amy Hardberger
Gabriel Eckstein
Water law is the field of law concerned with the ownership, control, and use of water resources, both surface and subsurface. Although most closely related to property law, recent developments in other legal fields, especially in environmental law, have heavily influenced the interpretation, application, and development of water law. As a result, water law today encompasses a broad perspective and often takes into account individual and community rights, environmental issues, commerce and economics, and other societal and legal concerns. Significantly, modern water law is also an interdisciplinary practice. In light of the continuously expanding body of knowledge of the hydrologic …

Muskie School Capstones and Dissertations
Accountable Care Organizations (ACOs) have grown rapidly in recent years as an organizational vehicle to support high quality care at a sustainable cost. ACOs function by holding providers financially accountable on measures of quality and cost for respective patient populations. Patient populations are defined via attribution methods that identify patient-provider relationships via service encounter history or attestation. There are hundreds of variations to attribution methods documented in the literature, some resulting in up to fifty percent different patient populations (for the same providers over the same time period) depending on methods. As a result, the quality and cost measure performance …
