Black Hair In Local Television: When Will Hair Just Be Hair?, Shari Straker
Black Hair In Local Television: When Will Hair Just Be Hair?, Shari Straker
Capstones
Hair is used as a form of identity and self expression. Oftentimes black hair is perceived as a political statement, unprofessional and unruly. Society has deemed any type of kink or curl as unattractive. In turn women of color have gone to great lengths to conform to this European beauty standard–specifically black women who are reporters and anchors in local news.
You don’t stop seeking help or understanding your pain when you’re sad. The same applies to women of color when discussing the topic of their natural hair. History and present day events have proved that this topic is still …

Three Centuries Of Black Catholic Faith, Culture And Activism In New Orleans, Cecilia Moore
Three Centuries Of Black Catholic Faith, Culture And Activism In New Orleans, Cecilia Moore
Journal of the Black Catholic Theological Symposium
This paper provides an overview of three centuries of black Catholic faith, culture and activism in New Orleans. In particular, it looks at how Catholicism helped antebellum black New Orleanians to build and maintain family ties, how black Catholics as individuals and collectives used their material and spiritual resources to create a religious community, schools, and parishes, and how black Catholic New Orleanians used their faith in conjunction with their religious institutions to fight for social justice and civil rights from the era of Reconstruction through the 1960s.
Intersectional Invisibilization: Black Female Movement Leaders In Mexico And Their Private Sphere Resistance, Lindsay Fasser
Intersectional Invisibilization: Black Female Movement Leaders In Mexico And Their Private Sphere Resistance, Lindsay Fasser
Undergraduate Honors Theses
International attention drew to Afro-Mexican individuals in 2015, when the Mexican inter-census survey first allowed Black Mexican people to self-identify as Afro-Mexican. The Black movement in Mexico revolving around recognition rather than liberation had been stirring in Coastal regions for decades prior, fueled by the work of incredible activists across the gender spectrum. However, the representation of such activists in public discourse is largely male. In analyzing this particular movement, the importance of intersectional theory becomes apparent, in unpacking both gendered and racialized forms of hierarchy and invisibility. By exploring the intersections between social movement and social suffering, as well …
Counter Narratives: A Phenomenological Study Of High Achieving African American Male High School Students., De'nay Lanise Speaks
Counter Narratives: A Phenomenological Study Of High Achieving African American Male High School Students., De'nay Lanise Speaks
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examined the contributing factors to the success of high achieving African American male high school students who attend an all-male, predominantly Black, college-preparatory academy. The study took place in an urban, Midwestern school district and highlighted the lived experience and perspectives of students who have at least a 3.0 grade point average. Through the lens of Critical Race Theory, this study was an effort to bring attention to counter narratives to the otherwise deleterious image portrayed of African American males. The history and plight of the African American male is included to provide a comprehensive understanding of the …

Student Voices: African American High School Seniors' Perception Of Culturally Responsive Teaching., Whitney M. Stewart
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation examined African-American high school seniors’ perceptions of culturally responsive teaching in one public high school within a large urban public-school district in the southeastern region of the United States. It begins with a brief historical overview on the plight of African-Americans in the US public education system and how public school educators have failed to leverage Afrocultural learning orientations as an asset to educate and increase the academic achievement of African-American students in classrooms. The Philosophical Aspects of Cultural Difference Framework (Nichols, 1986, 1995) will guide this dissertation study. The latter part of the dissertation reveals that a …

An Analysis Of African-American Faculty Experiences During The Tenure Process, Katrina M. Hubbard
An Analysis Of African-American Faculty Experiences During The Tenure Process, Katrina M. Hubbard
Dissertations
Abstract
How faculty allocate their time among research, teaching, and service, and the perceived quality of that work determines whether faculty obtain tenure or are released from the university (Bellas & Toutkoushian, 1999; Link, Swann, & Bozeman, 2008; Price & Cotten, 2006). Prior research indicated that African-American faculty comprised 4.5% of the faculty at high-activity research institutions and 3.5% of faculty at very-high-activity research institutions (The Chronicle of Higher Education Almanac 2016-2017, 2016).
The purpose of this study was to 1) document African-American faculty experiences during their tenure probationary period at PWI research institutions; 2) compare faculty experiences during the …
For The Bible Tells Me So, Jade Dozier
For The Bible Tells Me So, Jade Dozier
Master's Theses
The relationship between the LGBTQ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning) community and the church has been studied for critical reasons. The connection between the two has been uneasy because of the religious beliefs from religious groups and the many misunderstandings of what the LGBTQ community believes in. I have been able to understand the poor relationship between the Black church and homosexuality from the sources that are examined in my Literature Review. I evaluated the similarities and differences between queer men and women based on upbringing, denomination, and familial acceptance. As a LA native, I narrowed research on Black …

Religion, Racism, And Ecological Stress Among African-American Families: A Qualitative Analysis Of Perceptions And Coping Strategies, Johnnie W. Jones
Religion, Racism, And Ecological Stress Among African-American Families: A Qualitative Analysis Of Perceptions And Coping Strategies, Johnnie W. Jones
LSU Doctoral Dissertations
ABSTRACT
Americans do not reside in what many consider now a Post-Racial society. A remarkable number of researchers found that African Americans are more likely than any other racial group to experience racism, manifested by racist attitudes and practices, which negatively affect their physical, mental, and emotional wellbeing (health). Very importantly, numerous scholarly works have examined racism and Black women qualitatively. Unfortunately, less has been known about the personal processes and meaning-making mechanisms of Black married couples and African American males in terms of how they cope with racism, and ecological stress. To address this gap, this study uses qualitative …

The Damaging Effects Of Intersectionality And Layers Of Oppression On United States Female Soccer Players, Brooke L. Priddy

Black athletes face structural and overt racism in all sports across the country, in which the majority of White Americans either chooses to ignore or sometimes even use to victimize certain athletes. They are discriminated against because of the color of their skin, despite achieving the same levels of success and fame as their white competitors. Black athletes must work harder than white athletes for the same end goal, not because of any sort of athletic disadvantage, but because of racial injustice and intolerance. Soccer is a prime example of how Black athletes face racism in sport. Black female soccer …

The Myth Of Promiscuity: Examining Black Male Sexual Narratives And Sexual Identity, Seth Young
The Myth Of Promiscuity: Examining Black Male Sexual Narratives And Sexual Identity, Seth Young
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Black masculinity and sexuality are common topics across areas of philosophy, psychology, cultural studies and others. Yet, these topics are dedicated to the racial narrative of hypersexual Black male, the sexual objectification of Black men, and their presumed promiscuity. While such topics are important, there is little qualitative research that looks at the complexity and emotionality of African American men’s sexual experiences. Using the theoretical research on black masculinity and sexuality as its backdrop, this dissertation explores how heterosexual, African American men experience their sexuality. The study incorporates narrative inquiry and in-depth, semi-structured interviews to gather stories of five African …

An Examination Of Career Experiences Of Black Senior Level Administrators In College Athletics, Russell Andrew Pointer Jr.
Masters Theses
The purpose of this study was to examine the career experiences of Black senior level administrators (SLAs) in college athletics using Critical Race Theory (CRT). Senior level administrators included the following: Athletic Directors (ADs), Deputy ADs, Executive ADs, and Senior-Associate ADs. Seven Black SLAs participated via phone interviews.Interviews were transcribed verbatim and three rounds of coding produced three primary themes and eight subthemes. The findings produced the following themes: having champions in one’s corner, navigating the system, and embracing individuality. The idea of having champions in one’s corner means creating and maintaining relationships that provide guidance, encouragement, and advocacy. Secondly, …
