Utah State Women’S Soccer Pre-Game Starter Circle, Mealii Enos Dec 2017

Utah State Women’S Soccer Pre-Game Starter Circle, Mealii Enos

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

The starters will take the field after having a last cheer with the entire team. We will jog over to our side and circle up. Everyone puts their arms around each other and puts their right foot forward into the circle. The circle is super tight and close. During this time people will usually start saying encouraging things, or remind the team of things we need to remember for the game. Some examples of things people will say are “C’mon guys we got this” or “Let’s play our game.” Generally, upperclassmen and seniors will be talking during this time but …

Supporting Healthcare Teams With Implementation Projects: Shaping A Toolbox, Carian Van Der Sman Dec 2017

Supporting Healthcare Teams With Implementation Projects: Shaping A Toolbox, Carian Van Der Sman

Creativity and Change Leadership Graduate Student Master's Projects

This project explores a) the challenges healthcare professionals experience when they work in a team to implement new (but elsewhere existing or proven) products or solutions into their practice and b) how a toolbox of creativity and change methods, tools and techniques might look like to support them to overcome these challenges. This project shows that healthcare professionals most likely benefit from 1) tools that provide teambuilding and would support the sense of growing together, 2) tools that would demonstrate an overview of types of resistance they could face and strategies to overcome them and 3) tools that provide an …

Names For Non-Student-Athletes, Mealii Enos Nov 2017

Names For Non-Student-Athletes, Mealii Enos

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

The words used by student-athletes to identify non-student-athletes are “muggles”, “normies”, and “narps.” Narp stands for “non-athletic regular person.” Here are several examples of how I have used or heard these words used in conversation or how I would use these words in conversation.

“They live with two teammates and a few muggles.”

“You know [name]? Oh, well they’re a muggle you may not have met them before.”

“She’s my favorite muggle.”

“Make friends with the normies ‘cause then they can take notes for you when you miss class.”

“What a narp” or “you look like a narp.”

Some people have like specific people they go next to each time and it changes each year. Some people just go in random spots, like this year, like I used to stand by specific …

Team Performance And Project Success, Ijeoma Okoronkwo Oct 2017

Team Performance And Project Success, Ijeoma Okoronkwo

Dissertations and Theses

Project Teamwork is a worthy objective aimed at accomplishing high level cooperation, productivity and success but often times this is not so. The level of performance applied towards a project work has a direct impact on the project success or failure.

Teams are the basic structure of how project activities and tasks are being organized and managed within companies and organizations. Therefore, the success or the failure of a project depends largely on the overall performance of the teams assigned to the project. This increased attention towards teams has forced many organizations to focus on improving the overall performance of …

Proactive Workplace Bullying In Teams: Test Of A Rational And Moral Model Of Aggression, Anthony S. Colaneri Aug 2017

Proactive Workplace Bullying In Teams: Test Of A Rational And Moral Model Of Aggression, Anthony S. Colaneri

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

This study tested part of a recently developed theoretical model of proactive workplace aggression put forth by Dixon, Chang, and Johnson (2015). The model postulates distinct motives underlying why perpetrators will morally justify their aggressive behavior, dependent upon the relative in/out-group status and relative hierarchical status of the target. Participants from Amazon’s MTurk community were shown one of four vignettes that described a team workplace scenario where the participant was presented with the choice to act aggressively toward a coworker in order to help facilitate the team’s goal. All four of the model’s dyadic perpetrator-target relationships were represented, but the …

Utah State University Women’S Soccer Ipod Idol, Mealii Enos Aug 2017

Utah State University Women’S Soccer Ipod Idol, Mealii Enos

USU Student Folklore Fieldwork

iPod Idol begins when the seniors call everyone to the back of the bus, where they are already sitting. They will just suddenly start yelling “Everyone to the back of the bus!” or “Back of the bus!” Everyone who is a sophomore or older knows what’s going to happen and gets excited, but the freshmen have no idea what is going on. It is made clear that this is not an optional request. Everyone crams into the back seats, sitting three or four to a bench and standing in the aisle. Once everyone is there, the seniors will explain the …

Radiative Heat Transfer Analysis Of Railroad Bearings For Wayside Hot-Box Detector Optimization, Arthur Mealer, Constantine Tarawneh, Stephen Crown Jul 2017

Radiative Heat Transfer Analysis Of Railroad Bearings For Wayside Hot-Box Detector Optimization, Arthur Mealer, Constantine Tarawneh, Stephen Crown

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications and Presentations

The railroad industry utilizes wayside detection systems to monitor the temperature of freight railcar bearings in service. The wayside hot-box detector (HBD) is a device that sits on the side of the tracks and uses a non-contact infrared sensor to determine the temperature of the train bearings as they roll over the detector. Various factors can affect the temperature measurements of these wayside detection systems. The class of the railroad bearing and its position on the axle relative to the position of the wayside detector can affect the temperature measurement. That is, the location on the bearing cup where the …

Initial Development Of A Team Viability Measure, Jessica Nicole Cooperstein Jun 2017

Initial Development Of A Team Viability Measure, Jessica Nicole Cooperstein

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Team effectiveness has been studied greatly in organizational research, and many factors have been identified that contribute to team success. However, given that numerous work teams today are long-term, ongoing entities, performance alone may not be the most appropriate measure. Many teams need to be highly adaptive to meet environmental demands (Tannenbaum, Mathieu, Salas, & Cohen, 2012). These teams go through several performance episodes, often managing several tasks simultaneously (Marks, Mathieu, & Zaccaro, 2001). Team viability as a construct may be useful in determining how well a team will perform on subsequent tasks. Viability assesses the team’s potential for future …

Not Just How Much You Know: Interactional Effect Of Cultural Knowledge And Metacognition On Creativity In A Global Context, Chua, Roy Y. J., Kok Yee Ng

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

The ability to think and solve problems creatively in a multicultural environment is critical for success in the 21st century. Integrating research on creative cognition and cultural intelligence, we examine the interactional effects of two cognitive capabilities – cultural knowledge and cultural metacognition – on individuals’ creativity in multicultural teams. We propose that although cultural knowledge is useful for creativity, too much knowledge can be detrimental because of cognitive overload and entrenchment. This inverted U-shaped relationship however, is moderated by cultural metacognition. Results of our study support our hypothesis of an inverted U-shape relationship between cultural knowledge and creativity. As expected, we found …

Designing Effective Teams For Technical Services: The Role Of Leadership, Followership, And Group Emotional Intelligence, Emily A. Hicks

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Teams make better decisions, develop more creative solutions, and achieve a higher level of productivity when the group has a high level of trust, a sense of group identity, and a sense of group efficacy. This presentation will discuss the role of leadership, followership, and group emotional intelligence in teams and the implications for library technical services. Good followership is vital in today’s highly collaborative, team-oriented libraries because the line between leaders and those they lead is often blurred. The key to defining followership, as in leadership, lies with the relationship between leaders and followers. Effective followers possess skills that …

That's Not Fair! Examining Individual Differences In Perceptions Of Fairness, Hayden Jerney Randolph Woodley Mar 2017

That's Not Fair! Examining Individual Differences In Perceptions Of Fairness, Hayden Jerney Randolph Woodley

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

Within organizations, fairness is an important concept and has received considerable research attention. Some research, interestingly, suggests that individuals differ in their perceptions of equity. Building on this research, four empirical studies were conducted to develop a measure of a new construct (i.e., equity orientation) and examine its predictive validity. In Study 1 (N = 836) and Study 2 (N = 600), the Equity Orientation Scale (EOS) was created and its relations with two popular personality models – the HEXACO and the Dark Tetrad – were examined across self- and peer-ratings. In Study 3 (N = 433) and Study 4 …

Leaders On Their Best Behavior: Leader Behaviors Resulting In Effective Virtual Teams, Sarah Elizabeth Frick Mar 2017

Leaders On Their Best Behavior: Leader Behaviors Resulting In Effective Virtual Teams, Sarah Elizabeth Frick

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A more globalized workforce, coupled with technological advances in electronic communication, have led organizations to turn to virtual work teams at a rapidly increasing rate (Gilson, Maynard, Young, Vartiainen, & Hakonen, 2015). Leadership has been shown to aid team performance across work domains (Morgeson, DeRue, & Karam, 2010), and there exist a host of functional leader behaviors that have been found to benefit face-to-face team performance (Burke, Stagl, Klein, Goodwin, Salas, & Halpin, 2006). Attention to leadership in this new era of work teams is necessary to identify those specific behaviors that enable effective virtual team functioning. Team performance, whether …

Team Member Selection Strategies, Robert Carl Stewart Jan 2017

Team Member Selection Strategies, Robert Carl Stewart

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Business teams have been losing millions of dollars every year in cost and schedule over-runs from incomplete or failed projects. The purpose of this single case study was to explore the strategies that business managers use to determine team fit when selecting employees for assignment to cross-functional project teams. The participants for this study were 3 senior management personnel and a 6-member employee focus group, all from midsized, nonprofit organizations located within 200 miles of the tri-state region of Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. The conceptual framework for this study was Werbel and Gilliland's theory of person-group fit, McCrae's and John's …

Determining Relationships Between Organizational Unit Functioning (Teams And Working Groups) And Unit Performance In Government Scientific And Engineering Organizations, David A. Clark Pe

Dissertations

For more than sixty years, following the extraordinary scientific and engineering accomplishments achieved during World War II, organizational unit research has been at the forefront of organizational research. What was once referred to as teams of scientists or engineers that delivered the atomic bomb, nuclear power, jet engines, space exploration, micro-computers, cellular communications and the internet has led to the modern incarnation of what are referred to as teams or working groups. The objective of this research was to investigate relationships between organizational functioning (teams and working groups) and organizational unit performance. To investigate these potential relationships, organizational functioning and …

Audere Est Facere: Reconsidering Proactivity And Examining Its Impact On Teams, Erik C. Taylor Jan 2017

Audere Est Facere: Reconsidering Proactivity And Examining Its Impact On Teams, Erik C. Taylor

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Proactivity has become one of the most prominent phenomena in organizational behavior over the last twenty-five years. Scholars have established several different methods of assessing proactivity as a dispositional trait, and identified numerous different types of proactive behaviors. Further, interest in proactivity as a phenomenon within and among teams has been an area of growing recent interest. However, the literature is plagued with a number of problems that limit our understanding of proactivity and impede the growth of the field. At the conceptual level, scholars frequently lament the lack of theoretical unity and the proliferation of overlapping constructs that results …

Social Loafing Construct Validity In Higher Education: How Well Do Three Measures Of Social Loafing Stand Up To Scrutiny?, Jacquelyn Deleau

Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the construct validity of social loafing using convergent and discriminant validity principles. Three instruments that purport to measure social loafing were factor analyzed: A ten-item instrument by George (1992), a 13-item instrument by Mulvey and Klein (1998), and a 22-item instrument by Jassawalla, Sashittal, and Malshe (2009) for a total of 45 items that were compiled into a single instrument with which data were collected, correlated, and factor analyzed.

One hundred and sixty graduate and undergraduates enrolled in management courses at a small private Northern California university were surveyed. Thirteen classes were …
