In today’s microfinance, scholars and policy-makers across the world have emphasized the importance of financial sustainability, or the ability of a microfinance institution (MFI) to finance its operations. In order to reach financial sustainability, MFIs embrace commercialization, a process where an MFI undergoes restructuring in order to open up avenues to capital. Yet, scholars are concerned that this emphasizes on financial sustainability will cause the social good objective to suffer, a phenomenon known as “trade-off.” Indeed, studies have found that commercialization impacts MFI outreach in various ways. Family caregivers of hospice patients experience an increased burden due to providing ongoing care. Research on the issue produces no consensus on evidence-based programs to alleviate the burden. Respite or relief services continue to be the primary solution applied to the problem. Central Coast Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice supported a project to address caregiver burden. Hospice provides volunteers to families to reduce the caregiver burden. The project consists of outreach and recruitment to obtain new volunteers that continue to deliver respite within the community. Explosives safety awareness programs must identify the target audience and communicate easily understood concepts. To be effective, an audience must apply the concepts presented; however, this is not enough. The program and its message must also be adaptable to a variety of audiences based on how they assimilate information. The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) has at least 100 years of safety education experience. Over this time, explosives safety messages underwent several evolutions.

The Extension Master Gardener (EMG) program is a vital contributor to Tennessee Extension residential and consumer horticulture education and outreach. In 2014, 2,480 volunteers statewide completed service and education requirements to achieve or maintain certified EMG status. These volunteers, led by Tennessee Extension agent county coordinators, contributed over 178,800 hours of service while recording over 30,300 hours of continuing education. These totals illustrate both the contributions of EMG volunteers to horticulture outreach and their desire for education to enhance their own knowledge and skill. NAMI on Campus at Purdue University is a collegiate branch of the national, grassroots organization called the National Alliance on Mental Illness. As an effort to address the growing need for mental health education, our organization piloted Indiana’s first Ending the Silence program. It is an educational outreach program focused on teaching local junior high and high school students about mental health through an informative and interactive curriculum. In the Spring of 2017, our library conducted a book drive for the Malawi College of Health Sciences in Blantyre, Malawi. The College’s library serves about 700 students, as well as health care professionals from a neighboring hospital. However, the library lacks sufficient resources, with most of their books being outdated or in poor condition, which diminishes health care quality in Malawi.

This poster presents results of a statewide civic engagement survey and shares one academic library's civic engagement outreach activities. The George Washington University (GW) has held annual Research Days highlighting research done by students and residents. During spring 2017, GW’s Himmelfarb Library proposed a video series capturing students’ research experience and participating in GW’s Research Days.

The primary goal of the video series was to promote GW research achievements on both a school and individual level. The short video interviews provided participants with a new method to share their work, discuss their experiences and highlight the research conducted at their school.

California's 4-H Youth Development Program has adopted an asset-based community development approach to extending programming with Latino youths and families. This review provides (1) a discussion of best practices, including the content and frequency of posts, and (2) tips on how to get started on a library oriented page. Facebook is a powerful social media platform that, when used correctly, can have beneficial effects for academic library outreach and marketing. However, it is not a catch-all for engagement with students, staff, faculty, and the public. Engagement through Facebook needs to be carefully thought out and well-planned in order to meet the needs of library outreach and work toward the university and library strategic plan.

Partnering with non-academic departments allows academic libraries to create new programming ideas and reach more students. According to the results of a national survey, academic librarians at institutions of all sizes are partnering with many different types of non-academic departments. These partnerships offer efficiencies through shared cost and staffing and offer additional benefits to all groups involved. This article identifies the non-academic departments that these libraries are partnering with, highlights potential events to raise awareness of services, and describes ways in which these partnerships help engage with students.

Objectives: Cigarette smoking remains a major cause of death in China. Are health sciences libraries in China currently providing awareness, advocacy, or research support for the societal benefits of smoking reduction? Methods: Following institutional review board approval, Library contacts for Chinese schools of medicine, public health, and pharmacy were identified. A bilingual online survey was constructed to obtain respondents’ demographic detail and answers to questions about library resources and services that constitute academic awareness, advocacy, curriculum, or research support about tobacco and smoking. Results: 43% of reporting librarians work on a smoke-free campus. 100% of all reporting libraries work in …

Computer Science: Faculty Publications and Other Works

Magic tricks based on computer science concepts help grab student attention and can motivate them to delve more deeply. Error detection ideas long used by computer scientists provide a rich basis for working magic; probably the most well known trick of this type is one included in the CS Unplugged activities. This paper shows that much more powerful variations of the trick can be performed, some in an unplugged environment and some with computer assistance. Some of the tricks also show off additional concepts in computer science and discrete mathematics.

In 2014, a university’s housing and residence life department implemented a program to provide students with a series of learning goals to master by graduation, including authorship, interculturalism, community living and more.

The program is connected to the housing assignment process and is called PATH, “Points Accumulated Towards Housing.” By participating in approved events, students accumulate “points” and secure higher priority within the housing assignments process.

At Grinnell College we believe that students can be the best teachers and that lasting learning also happens outside of the classroom. The Grinnell College Libraries' peer mentoring program is rooted in these beliefs. Our program has two components: advanced research help provided by reference assistants (RAs) at the reference desk; and basic information service provided by all students working at our public service desks. Throughout this presentation, attendees will be challenged to consider if peer information service is appropriate for their libraries and to articulate initial steps to explore and implement such a service.
