Effect Of Ultrasonic Treatment On The Microstructure And Mechanical Properties Of Al6061 And Composite, Ana S. Exime
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
In this study, the effect of ultrasonic treatment (UST) parameters such as amplitude, sonication time, and melt temperature on microstructure and microhardness of Al 6061 alloy is evaluated. The effect of UST on the dispersion of tungsten disulfide (WS2) and carbon nanotubes (CNT) as reinforcement particles in Al 6061 during casting is also studied. The cast Al 6061 with UST demonstrated 32% grain size reduction and 8% increase in the microhardness for optimum processing conditions. The cavitation process induced by UST is responsible for the refinement in microstructure and increase of hardness by enhancing the degassing and nucleation …
Characterization Of Powder Metallurgy Lightweight Alloys, Douglas B. Boudreau
Characterization Of Powder Metallurgy Lightweight Alloys, Douglas B. Boudreau
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Over the past few decades, the automotive industry has seen a steady increase in the amount of powder metallurgy products that have been included in modern vehicles. The majority of the parts were cold press and sintered products that allowed for a high production volume and low cost option. In more recent years, the powder metallurgy parts have seen service as structural parts mainly consisting of steel base products. The mechanical and dynamic properties of four lightweight materials produced by powder metallurgy and additive manufactured are tested to determine if they are suitable to be used in a structural part …
Developing Instrumentation For Fabricating And Characterizing Thin Film Aluminum Mirrors, P. Claire Segura
Developing Instrumentation For Fabricating And Characterizing Thin Film Aluminum Mirrors, P. Claire Segura
Student Works
The best material for constructing a mirror for a broad-bandwidth telescope that is also capable of reflecting EUV light is pure aluminum. In order to test how the reflectance of aluminum in the EUV range changes as it oxidizes, a system has been constructed that allows a thin aluminum mirror to be constructed inside of a vacuum, where its reflectance can then be tested immediately. Because the experiment must take place in a vacuum, it must also be controlled remotely through a computer program, which manages the mirror fabrication process as well as the collection and analysis of reflectance data. …
Aluminum Matrix Syntactic Foam Fabricated With Additive Manufacturing, M. Spratt, Joseph William Newkirk, K. Chandrashekhara
Aluminum Matrix Syntactic Foam Fabricated With Additive Manufacturing, M. Spratt, Joseph William Newkirk, K. Chandrashekhara
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Syntactic foams are lightweight structural composites with hollow reinforcing particles embedded in a soft matrix. These materials have applications in transportation, packaging, and armor due to properties such as relatively high specific stiffness, acoustic dampening, and impact absorption. Aluminum matrices are the most widely studied of metal matrix syntactic foams, but there is little to no research in regards to processing the foams with additive manufacturing. It is theorized that the fast cooling rates and limited kinetic energy input of additive could reduce two issues commonly associated with processing syntactic foams: microsphere flotation in the melt and microsphere fracture during …

Separation Of Rare Earth Elements From Aluminum Using Ion-Exchange Chromatography, Shabrina Nurfitriani, Hoon Choi, Nien-Hwa Linda Wang
The Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (SURF) Symposium
Demand of rare earth elements (REEs) has increased tremendously due to their key roles in electronics and emerging technology. Recently, new technology was developed at Purdue to extract REEs from coal fly ash. This study is focused on the separation of aluminum ions (Al), a major impurity in the extract, from REEs. The goal is to test the feasibility of an ion-exchange process for separating REEs from a highly-concentrated Al solution. First, we reduced the resin particle size to decrease dispersion and diffusion effects, to increase resin productivity, and to reduce the amounts of REEs and the ion-exchange resin required …

This study provides an in-depth investigation into low-cost and no-cost substrate release mechanisms that allow gas metal arc weld 3-D printed ER4043 aluminum and ER70S-6 steel parts to be removed from a reusable print substrate with minimal energy. Aluminum oxide, boron nitride, and titanium nitride coatings were evaluated as possible substrate release agents for aluminum printing. Additionally, the in situ formation of substrate release agents such as intermetallics and oxides were tested for both aluminum and steel printing. Testing was performed with a modified Charpy impact tester to remove 3-D printed metal parts from an 1100 aluminum or A36 low …

Toxic And Essential Trace Element Content Of Commonly Administered Pediatric Oral Medications, Robert A. Yokel, Sarah E. Seger, Jason M. Unrine
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications
OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that commonly administered pediatric oral medications are a significant source of toxic elements. The concentrations of 16 elements were determined in 14 frequently used pediatric oral medications.
METHODS: Samples were prepared for analysis by dilution or nitric acid microwave-assisted digestion and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The intake of each element from administration for 1 week of the medication's maximum recommended daily dose to 6-month-olds was calculated and compared to an exposure guideline for that element. Exposure guidelines used for adverse effects were minimal risk levels, oral …

Ballistic Limit Equations For Non-Aluminum Projectiles Impacting Dual-Wall Spacecraft Systems, William P. Schonberg, J. Martin Ratliff
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
One of the primary design considerations of earth-orbiting spacecraft is the mitigation of the damage that might occur from an on-orbit MMOD impact. Traditional damage-resistant design consists of a 'bumper' that is placed a small distance away from a spacecraft component or from the wall of the element in which it is housed. The performance of such a multi-wall structural element is typically characterized by its ballistic limit equation (BLE), which defines the threshold particle size that results in a failure of the spacecraft element. BLEs are also key components of any micro-meteoroid/orbital debris (MMOD) risk assessment calculations. However, these …
Aluminum And Phthalates In Calcium Gluconate: Contribution From Glass And Plastic Packaging, Robert A. Yokel, Jason M. Unrine
Aluminum And Phthalates In Calcium Gluconate: Contribution From Glass And Plastic Packaging, Robert A. Yokel, Jason M. Unrine
Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications
Introduction: Aluminum contamination of parenteral nutrition solutions has been documented for three decades. It can result in elevated blood, bone, and whole body aluminum levels associated with neurotoxicity, reduced bone mass and mineral content, and perhaps hepatotoxicity. The primary aluminum source among parenteral nutrition components is glass-packaged calcium gluconate, in which aluminum concentration the past three decades has averaged~ 4000 [mu]g/L, compared to < 200 [mu]g/L in plastic container-packaged calcium gluconate. A concern about plastic packaging is leaching of plasticizers, including phthalates, which have the potential to cause endocrine (male reproductive system) disruption and neurotoxicity.
Methods: Aluminum was quantified in samples collected periodically over more than two years from three calcium gluconate sources used to prepare parenteral nutrition solutions; two packaged in glass (from France and the US) and one in plastic …
Corrosion Resistance Of Silane Coatings On Aluminum And Magnesium Alloys, John Demopoulos
Corrosion Resistance Of Silane Coatings On Aluminum And Magnesium Alloys, John Demopoulos
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
The purpose of this project was to increase the corrosion resistance of aluminum and magnesium alloys by coating the coupons with a silane on the surface. Four different silanes: 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES), Bis(triethoxysilylpropyl)amine (Bis), (Heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrodecyl)trichlorosilane (FTS), and (Heptadecafluoro-1,1,2,2-tetrahydrodecyl)triethoxysilane (non Cl FTS) will be used and compared to see which silane would give the best corrosion resistance. Each silane solution was coated on the coupons by using a solution method in which the coupon was submerged for 24 hours and then thermally cured for another 24 hours. Once the coating was applied, the water contact angle and the thickness of the coating …
The Effects Of Carboxylic Acids In Aluminum Anodizing, Abby E. Koczera
The Effects Of Carboxylic Acids In Aluminum Anodizing, Abby E. Koczera
Honors Theses and Capstones
Hard-anodized alumina coatings were formed in sulfuric acid at low temperature and high current density in the presence of carboxylic acid additives. Citric acid, trimesic acid, mellitic acid and ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) were utilized in varying concentrations. The additives were chosen for their capacity to form complexes with tri-valent aluminum and hence impart chemical stability to the coatings. The coatings were sealed in boiling water, and corrosion resistance was observed in a high pH solution of potassium hydroxide. The coatings were examined using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to assess coating thickness and pore dimensions. Thicker coatings were produced when the …
Aluminum Production Costs: A Comparative Case Study Of Production Strategy, Joseph Nloga Ndjebayi
Aluminum Production Costs: A Comparative Case Study Of Production Strategy, Joseph Nloga Ndjebayi
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Slumping world aluminum prices have energized some aluminum producers to institute strategies to reduce product costs. This multiple comparative case study explored the strategies used by 4 aluminum producers in Western Europe: 2 companies that have successfully reduced production costs and 2 companies that have not. Wicksteed's economic theory of production and production costs was the conceptual framework for this research. Data from the companies' strategic and industry reports and from interviews with 32 senior managers were analyzed using pattern finding and clustering, a recursive approach to data gathering and analysis established by Miles, Huberman, and Saldana. Six themes emerged: …
Highly Selective Schiff Base Derivatives For Colorimetric Detection Of Al$^{3+}$, Zi̇ya Aydin, Mustafa Keleş
Highly Selective Schiff Base Derivatives For Colorimetric Detection Of Al$^{3+}$, Zi̇ya Aydin, Mustafa Keleş
Turkish Journal of Chemistry
Schiff base derivatives NBAR and NSAR were developed for selective detection of Al$^{3+}$ in aqueous solution. UV-vis spectroscopic studies revealed that NBAR and NSAR showed marked sensitivity and selectivity to Al$^{3+}$ in acetonitrile (ACN)/water (v/v, 1:1, pH 6.80). The NBAR and NSAR receptors bound Al$^{3+}$ in a 2:1 stoichiometry with apparent binding constants 4.09 $\times $ 10$^{11}$ M$^{-2}$ and 1.65 $\times $ 10$^{12}$ M$^{-2}$, respectively. They also displayed distinct changes in color upon the alteration of free Al$^{3+}$ levels in solution with reversible responses and showed little interference with other metal ions.

Passive radiation shielding is one strategy to mitigate the problem of space radiation exposure. While space vehicles are constructed largely of aluminum, polyethylene has been demonstrated to have superior shielding characteristics for both galactic cosmic rays and solar particle events due to the high hydrogen content. A method to calculate the shielding effectiveness of a material relative to reference material from Bragg peak measurements performed using energetic heavy charged particles is described. Using accelerated alpha particles at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Space Radiation Laboratory at Brookhaven National Laboratory, the method is applied to sample tiles from the Heat …
