What's In An Ally? Closing Gaps In Lgbtq+ Support, Laura Gentner Nov 2016

What's In An Ally? Closing Gaps In Lgbtq+ Support, Laura Gentner

Journal of Research, Assessment, and Practice in Higher Education

This study will explore the relationship between LGBTQ+ identifying students’ expectations of and experiences with allies, and their perceptions of campus climate. LGBTQ+ ally training programs and visibility of LGBTQ+ allies contribute to both campus climate and LGBTQ+ students’ perceptions of that climate, leading to more positive and healthy college experiences. However, it is not clear that current practice in training and educating allies truly reflects the needs of LGBTQ+ identifying students.

While research is available for the design and implementation of ally training programs, there is little to no research on what LGBTQ+ identifying students expect of allies, nor …

Evaluation Of Sexual Orientation Items In Population Health Surveys Among Canadians: A Mixed Methods Approach, Christoffer Dharma Aug 2016

Evaluation Of Sexual Orientation Items In Population Health Surveys Among Canadians: A Mixed Methods Approach, Christoffer Dharma

Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository

A single item sexual orientation question has been asked in Statistics Canada health surveys to identify health inequalities in Canada. Using a mixed methods study with convenience sample of Canadians, we evaluated this question in comparison to a set of US questions that includes domains of sexual identity, behaviour and attraction. The single item question had an 85.8% sensitivity and 100% specificity in capturing sexual minorities from the broadest definition (n = 311). Chance-corrected agreements with sexual identity, 12 months and life time sexual behaviour were 0.89, 0.39 and 0.48 respectively. Both trans and cisgender people revealed that there were …

Associations Among Sexual Victimization Experiences, Coping Strategies, And Psychopathology In Heterosexual And Sexual Minority Women, Gabriela Lopez Aug 2016

Associations Among Sexual Victimization Experiences, Coping Strategies, And Psychopathology In Heterosexual And Sexual Minority Women, Gabriela Lopez

Psychology ETDs

This study examined the associations among sexual minority status, adult sexual victimization, childhood experiences of abuse and neglect, coping strategies, and psychopathology in womens sexual assault experiences. One hundred and seventy-seven women (n = 177) were recruited via the Internet to complete an online study asking them about their most distressing/severe sexual victimization experience. Non-parametric tests were used to examine associations among the variables. There were significant associations between sexual minority status and both victimization severity and sexual revictimization, with sexual minority status being associated with higher levels of victimization severity and a higher likelihood of being revictimized. There were …

Social Support And Mental Health Among Homeless Youth: A Multi-Group Sem Model Of Non-Lgbt*, Lgb, And Trans* Youth In Metro-Atlanta, Morgan Justice Aug 2016

Social Support And Mental Health Among Homeless Youth: A Multi-Group Sem Model Of Non-Lgbt*, Lgb, And Trans* Youth In Metro-Atlanta, Morgan Justice

Sociology Theses

LGBT* youth are over-represented among homeless youth and they face unique circumstances from their non-LGBT* homeless peers, such as increased risks of psychological distress (Fredriksen-Goldsen et al. 2014). Through multi-group, structural equation modeling, I compare the effects of time homeless on mental health outcomes (e.g., psychological distress) as measured by the Kessler 6 (K6) scale mediated by social support across non-LGBT*, LGB, and trans* groups. Findings indicate that social support is a significant mediator between the time a youth is homeless and their mental health outcomes, regardless of LGBT* status. Youth who are homeless six months or longer have worse …

Lgb Cancer Survivors Are More Likely To Participate In Risky Behaviors Than Straight Cancer Survivors, United States, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2014, Thuy Hang T. Nguyen Aug 2016

Lgb Cancer Survivors Are More Likely To Participate In Risky Behaviors Than Straight Cancer Survivors, United States, Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System, 2014, Thuy Hang T. Nguyen

Public Health Theses

Cancer registries do not collect sexual orientation in their records, leading to limited information about LGB cancer survivorship. Studies have shown that both the LGB population and the population of cancer survivors participate in risky behaviors (i.e. smoking, drinking, and being overweight/obese; sleep inadequacy among cancer survivors), but information about LGB cancer survivors is limited. 2014 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) data was used to determine if LGB cancer survivors were more likely to participate in risky behaviors than straight cancer survivors. LGB survivors were more likely to drink at least one alcoholic beverage within the past 30 days …

Courage, Postimmunity Politics, And The Regulation Of The Queer Subject, Chantal Nadeau Jul 2016

Courage, Postimmunity Politics, And The Regulation Of The Queer Subject, Chantal Nadeau

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

In this paper, I argue that courage is invoked in contemporary political discourses in such a way as to regulate queer legal subjectivities. That is, the discourses of courage re-articulate the social, legal, and political relations that define and restrict the lives of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) citizens. Drawing on Roberto Esposito's theoretical elaboration of the concept of immunity, I remap the legal and political dynamics through which nations incorporate LGBT citizens into the polity. I discuss how the regulation of gay rights in a growing number of democracies in Europe, the Americas, and South Africa has contributed …

The Effects Of Sexual Orientation And Behavioral Style On Perceptions Of Leadership Potential And Effectiveness, Kristin Elizabeth Mann Jun 2016

The Effects Of Sexual Orientation And Behavioral Style On Perceptions Of Leadership Potential And Effectiveness, Kristin Elizabeth Mann

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

This research explored the influences that sexual orientation and gender norm adherence play in impacting perceptions of a leader’s hirability into and evaluation within a leadership role. Though sexual minority issues in the workplace represent a growing field of research, investigations into sexual orientation’s impact on outcomes relevant to leadership remain scant. As increasing numbers of openly gay and lesbian men and women take positions of leadership, there is a need for more information regarding the experiences of sexual minority leaders, with potential benefits to these individuals, their organizations, and related stakeholders. The research conducted here was intended to address …

Current And Prospective Foster Parents’ Perceptions Of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Foster Youth, Shay B. Alvarez, Stephanie K. Funston Jun 2016

Current And Prospective Foster Parents’ Perceptions Of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Foster Youth, Shay B. Alvarez, Stephanie K. Funston

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to gain insight into foster parents’ perceptions of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) foster youth through a self-administered survey in an attempt to provide better care for these children. The pool of participants were varied in most areas including age, gender, ethnicity, education levels, and religiosity. However, the majority was heterosexual and had less than 2 years of experience fostering. The results showed no particular demographics, trainings, or level of experience that contribute to more or less acceptance or preparedness. This may be due to response bias, however, it is more likely due …

Risk Factors For Sexual Assault: Can Existing Theories Explain Bisexual Women's Disproportionate Risk?, Tracy N. Hipp May 2016

Risk Factors For Sexual Assault: Can Existing Theories Explain Bisexual Women's Disproportionate Risk?, Tracy N. Hipp

Psychology Dissertations

Many women experience sexual violence, but bisexual women are at particularly high risk for such victimization. Theories attempting to explain women’s risk for sexual violence have focused on numerous risk factors (e.g., childhood abuse, substance use, sexual risk behavior, among others); however, many of these factors have not been explored with sexual minority survivors. The current study used multiple groups path analysis within a structural equation modeling framework in order to test a theory-driven model of victimization risk, first among a general sample of women, and then among subsamples of heterosexual, lesbian, and bisexual women. The prospective model included childhood …

Coming Out Late:The Impact On Individuals' Social Networks, Russell Elliott Spornberger Ma May 2016

Coming Out Late:The Impact On Individuals' Social Networks, Russell Elliott Spornberger Ma

Gerontology Theses

Social support is a key factor influencing older adults’ health and well-being. Disclosing one’s lesbian, gay, or bisexual identity at any age has great potential for altering, if not destroying, existing relationships with family, friends, and others. With long-established social roles and personal relationships, the potential risks may be accentuated for those who come out in mid- or later-life. Yet, researchers have paid scant attention to this phenomenon. This exploratory qualitative study examines the impact of coming out “late” on older adults’ social networks. In-depth interviews were conducted with a sample of fourteen older adults who disclosed their non-heterosexual identity …

Assessing The Needs Of Non-Monosexual Students Related To Campus Lgbt Services, Sidney R. Gardner May 2016

Assessing The Needs Of Non-Monosexual Students Related To Campus Lgbt Services, Sidney R. Gardner

Culminating Projects in Higher Education Administration

This research looked at the current campus climate for non-monosexual people and whether or not non-monosexual students felt understood and supported through current LGBTQ programs, services, and resources on their campus. The purpose of this research was to understand how LGBTQ centers/offices/services could best serve non-monosexual student populations. Ten undergraduate, mostly female identified, non-monosexual students at a large research intensive institution in the south participated in this basic qualitative research study. This research showed that non-monosexual students’ needs are not entirely being addressed through current programs, resources, and services on campus. According to this research, students were able to find …

The Deepening Of Identity: How Leadership Affects Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Student Sexual Identity Development, Ryan Terry Apr 2016

The Deepening Of Identity: How Leadership Affects Lesbian, Gay, And Bisexual Student Sexual Identity Development, Ryan Terry

New York Journal of Student Affairs

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) students become engaged in a number of leadership opportunities that may have an effect on how they view their sexual orientation. This qualitative study asked lesbian, gay, and bisexual students their perceptions of how their non-LGBT leadership experiences affected their sexual identity. The data was analyzed using an interpretivist process seeking themes that might contribute to a better understanding of leadership identity development for LGB students. Emerging themes suggested a correlation between sexual identity development and leadership identity development.

Love Of The Law: The Ethical Christology Of Southern Baptist Rhetoric And Language Concerning The Lgbtq Community, Alexander James Ward Apr 2016

Love Of The Law: The Ethical Christology Of Southern Baptist Rhetoric And Language Concerning The Lgbtq Community, Alexander James Ward

Honors Theses

The connection between society and a group is a complex and often tangled relationship. The division between the two can be blurred in many cases and therefore the movement of individuals within a particular group within a larger society is something that cannot always be immediately apparent. However, group identity and personal identity play an integral role in understanding how movement and action occur by individuals as they attempt to make sense of culture and its connection to their personal identity. The Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) and its members are no different. This Protestant denomination is one of the most …

Undergraduate Medical Student Research

Needs and Objectives The lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer (LGBTQ) community is a diverse group that, despite recent progress, continues to face health disparities. With 3.4% of US adults identifying as LGBTQ, healthcare providers have a duty to recognize their unique needs [1]. Negative outcomes are as diverse as the community, ranging from young gay men being twice as likely to be hypertensive as their straight peers [2] to lesbian women receiving very rare or no cervical cancer screening [3]. The 2011 Institute of Medicine report on LGBTQ health identified lack of provider knowledge as one of the foremost …

Gender And Non-Normative Sex In Sub-Saharan Africa, Johanna Bond Jan 2016

Gender And Non-Normative Sex In Sub-Saharan Africa, Johanna Bond

Michigan Journal of Gender & Law

This Article argues for the adoption of a gender-based framework to supplement rights promotion strategies and campaigns based on LGBTI identity. The Article draws upon feminist, queer, and trans theory to develop an expansive understanding of gender within international human rights law. An analysis incorporating such theory will catalyze more systematic promotion of LGBTI rights. Although the approach is applicable across a variety of geographic contexts, this Article uses sub-Saharan Africa as an illustrative case study. A focus on gender rights as supplementary to and interrelated with LGBTI rights offers both conceptual and pragmatic benefits in the struggle to promote …

Jotería-Historias: Theories From The Fringes, Robert Mitchell Gutierrez Jan 2016

Jotería-Historias: Theories From The Fringes, Robert Mitchell Gutierrez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

By collecting the cultural/historical narratives of gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and questioning (GBTQ) Chicanos of Colorado, this research project locates theories in the flesh, or theories of resistance and agency, in the forms of cuentos, pláticas, chismé, mitos, testimonios, and consejos to explicate a queer of color performance of intersectional and decolonial politics. To set the context, several historical and political snapshots of GBTQ Chicano experience over the last 500 years are reviewed to demonstrate how communication about, for, and between GBTQ Chicanos operate in a liminal state (nepantla) where violence, marginalization, and oppression are …

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Individuals identifying as gay, lesbian, bisexual, and questioning or unsure are often at greater risk of developing psychopathology. Minnesota youth, grades 9 and 11, completed the Minnesota Student Survey in 2013. Data were analyzed to ascertain differences within the aforementioned sexual minority groups as well as comparisons to heterosexual youth on questions adapted from the Global Appraisal of Individual Needs Short Screener (GAIN-SS). The GAIN-SS consists of self-reported items regarding internalizing and externalizing behaviors. In the present study, bisexual youth reported the most externalizing behaviors and the fewest internalizing behaviors. Heterosexual youth reported the fewest externalizing behaviors, but the most …

Differences In Attitudes Towards Heterosexual And Lgbt Homeless Youth In College Students, Jonathan P. S. Clinkenbeard Jan 2016

Differences In Attitudes Towards Heterosexual And Lgbt Homeless Youth In College Students, Jonathan P. S. Clinkenbeard

All Master's Theses

Youth homelessness, particularly among those who are lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT), continues to be an underreported problem in society today. This research was designed to investigate hypothesized differences in college students’ empathy towards heterosexual and LGBT youth, and what factors influence these differences. A sample of 81 female and 36 male participants read one of 12 vignettes describing a homeless youth’s situation and then, using the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, rated their level of empathy on a scale of 1 (low) to 7 (high). Vignettes differed by the youth’s gender, sexual orientation, and reason for …
