Kathryn Grant, director of The Cities Project at DePaul, is on a mission to help impoverished children cope with the extreme stress that negatively affects their mental, and sometimes physical, well-being, as well as their ability to learn. In her research, Grant found that the typical coping strategies professionals teach children often aren’t effective for those living in poverty. Instead, The Cities Project teaches methods, such as distraction, self-soothing and problem-solving, that Grant hopes will help them escape the cycle of poverty.

Research has shown that poverty is a greater predictor of educational disparities than race, despite the national focus on racial disparities. Further, living in disadvantaged neighborhoods that are characterized by qualities such as high poverty and unemployment can place a double burden on already poor students, further undermining educational achievement and future success. Neighborhood disadvantage is linked to a range of poor academic outcomes, yet only recently has research begun to explore the processes underlying the relationship between neighborhood disadvantage and these outcomes. Drawing on ecological theory, the following study proposes to examine how multiple settings relate to student outcomes. …

Kelli McGee, Depaul USA’s director of operations, recounts the challenges of overcoming and using cultural differences to help homeless persons under the auspices of Depaul Ukraine. She explains how she used a blend of American and Ukrainian approaches to foster Depaul Ukraine’s new organizational culture. She built upon the work of Depaul Ukraine’s founder, Vitaliy Novak. Hospitality was shown to staff and clients. McGee also describes how she and her team were able to empower their clients and make them part of a community.

John Conry discusses Vincentian health care history and principles and addresses inequities in health care, particularly in the United States. He focuses on the challenges that persons who are homeless face in managing chronic conditions and obtaining preventive care. A pharmacist and an educator at St. John’s University, Conry explains his work and that of his students with Project Renewal. Among other services, Project Renewal maintains five MedVans, traveling state-of-the-art clinics that work specifically with the homeless in New York. Each year, this 40-year-old, Chicago-based nonprofit provides housing, health care and human connection to 5,200 adults, teens, pregnant women and new moms in six Chicago neighborhoods.
