Aging or deterioration of the nation’s bridge infrastructure is a significant issue that requires attention. Causes for much of this deterioration can be attributed to two main factors, 1) corrosion, and 2) metallic fatigue, both of which work together to reduce the strength and serviceability of bridge components over time. In many instances, strengthening of bridge components using localized retrofits offers an economical and fast solution for increasing the longevity of existing steel bridges; however, such retrofits must be resilient to further corrosion and fatigue damage. In this study tools consisting of a 5mm cylindrical pin and a 12mm shoulder held by a simple tool holder were used to compare the wear of 11 tooling materials. The objective was to determine if using these tools in a spot welding configuration to simulate friction stir welding could differentiate the potential performance of tooling materials. All tools were made of varying percentages of polycrystalline cubic boron nitride (PCBN), tungsten (W) and rhenium (Re). The materials are referred to herein as GV1, GV2, G1, G2, G3, G4, G5, G6, G7, G8 and G9.

Tallgrass prairie ecosystems play a vital role in the carbon cycle; their restoration may be an important component of mitigating future climate change. To quantify the biosphere-to-atmosphere exchange of greenhouse gases, enclosure based chamber systems are frequently used because they are simple and inexpensive to construct, and can be easily replicated in a variety of ecosystems. We tested for differences between paired PVC and galvanized steel chambers in methane, nitrous oxide, and carbon dioxide emissions within a restored prairie at Nachusa Grasslands in June and July 2014. Reinforced concrete (RC) pipes are widely used as open channels (non-pressurized pipes) for sewage and storm water conveyance. RC pipes have generally achieved a reliable long-term performance. Depending on multiple parameters (e.g. pipe diameter, pipe wall thickness, required strength, etc.) the pipe may have up to three welded reinforcement cages in order to resist anticipated loads. Each cage is an assembled unit of steel reinforcement consisting of circumferential and longitudinal bars or wires. The fabrication process of a steel cage reinforcement is time and labour consuming. The aim of this study was to develop intumescent flame-retardant coatings that incorporate chicken eggshell (CES) waste as a novel eco-friendly bio-filler. Three flame-retardant additives, namely, ammonium polyphosphate phase II, pentaerythritol and melamine were mixed with flame-retardant fillers and acrylic binder to synthesize the intumescent coatings. The fire performance of the coatings was evaluated in accordance with 'BS 476: Part 6-Fire Propagation' and 'BS 476: Part 7-Surface Spread of Flame' test standards. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was used to evaluate the degree of delamination of the epoxy primer Uniprime ED-41 electrocoated on phosphate-treated cold-rolled steel in 3.5% NaCl exposed to air. Specimens with coating thicknesses of 20.3 and 20.8 µm and surface areas of 78.5 cm2 were used. Coating parameters were obtained using a circuit-analog model. The area of delamination was estimated using several EIS parameters, including the pore resistance and the break point frequency. These values were compared to the corroded area determined visually. Three-dimensional (3D) printing is being used for numerous applications: from consumer hobbies to the development of aircraft parts. However, inexpensive 3D printers have been constrained in material selection to plastic. These printer use the fused deposition modeling (FDM) method of printing, which is a relatively new technology that utilizes computer numerical control (CNC) techniques to deposit melted material at specific places. In this paper, the effects of process parameters, such as the tool rotational and traverse speeds, on temperature evolution and the microstructural and mechanical properties of dissimilar friction stir welding between 3 mm thick AA 7075 aluminum alloy and polycarbonate (PC) plates were investigated. The tool rotational and traverse speeds were varied from 3 000 to 3 500 rpm and 50 to 150 mm min(-1), respectively. The joint fabricated at 3 250 rpm and 100 mm min(-1) yielded a highest tensile load of 586 N. Surface roughness and cutting force are two key measures that describe machined surface integrity and power requirement evaluation, respectively. This investigation presents the effect of melt treatment with addition of bismuth and antimony on machinability when turning Al-11% Si-2% Cu alloy. The experiments are carried out under oblique dry cutting conditions using a PVD TIN-coated insert at three cutting speeds of 70, 130 and 250 m/min, feed rates of 0.05, 0.1, 0.15 mm/rev, and 0.05 mm constant depth of cut. This paper presents a simplified model using a fuzzy logic approach for predicting the serviceability of reinforced concrete (RC) beams strengthened with near surface mounted (NSM) reinforcement. Existing analytical models lack proper formulations for the prediction of deflection and crack width in NSM strengthened beams. These existing models are based on the externally bonded reinforcement (EBR) technique with fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) laminates, which presents certain limitations for application in predicting the behavior of NSM strengthened beams. The thin solidifying shell in the meniscus region of a continuous caster deforms due to severe contraction in steels of near-peritectic composition, thereby exacerbating the risks of cracking and in the extreme, breakouts. Both orientational and geometrical characteristics of grains in tertiary oxide scales have been quantitatively investigated using the electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) technique. Phase and orientation mappings demonstrate that the {001} planes of magnetite and the {0001} planes of hematite are parallel to the direction of oxide growth. Pole figures (PFs) as scattering plots clearly display the direct correlation between the orientations and microstructure sites of magnetite grains. Magnetite grains develop a strong rotated cube texture component that shifts to the {100} component, whereas those with the grain size of 1-5. μm develop the {001} cube texture component. A hot compression bonding process was developed to prepare a novel laminated composite consisting of high-Cr cast iron (HCCI) as the inner layer and low carbon steel (LCS) as the outer layers on a Gleeble 3500 thermomechanical simulator at a temperature of 950 °C and a strain rate of 0.001 S-1. Interfacial bond quality and hot deformation behaviour of the laminate were studied by microstructural characterisation and mechanical tests. This work presents a fine microstructure and local misorientation study of various oxide phases in the tertiary oxide scale formed on a hot-rolled steel strip via electron back-scattering diffraction (EBSD). Local strain in individual grains of four phases, ferrite (α-Fe), wustite (FeO), magnetite (Fe3O4) and hematite (α-Fe2O3), has been systematically analysed. The effect of deformation temperature on microstructure and mechanical properties was investigated for thermomechanically processed NbTi-microalloyed steel with ferrite-pearlite microstructure. With a decrease in the finish deformation temperature at 1348 K to 1098 K (1075 °C to 825 °C) temperature range, the ambient temperature yield stress did not vary significantly, work hardening rate decreased, ultimate tensile strength decreased, and elongation to failure increased. These variations in mechanical properties were correlated to the variations in microstructural parameters (such as ferrite grain size, solid solution concentrations, precipitate number density and dislocation density). A refined microstructure consisting of martensite and retained austenite at room temperature has been produced in a Nb-microalloyed low carbon Si-Mn steel by a novel heat-treatment, pre-quenching prior to quenching and partitioning processes (Q&Q-P). The results showed that compared with the conventional quenching and partitioning steel the mechanical properties of steel obtained by the novel treatment have been significantly improved, with a good combination of ultimate tensile strength (1000MPa) and total elongation (above 30%). The oxidation kinetics of ferritic stainless steel 430 was studied in dry and humid air at 1090 °C by Thermo Gravimetric Analysis (TGA). Different atmospheres and heating times were adopted for reheating to obtain different compositions and thickness of the oxide scale. In-situ neutron diffraction during cyclic tension-compression loading (þ3.5% to 2.8%) of a 17Mn-3Al-2Si-1Ni-0.06C steel that exhibits concurrent transformation and twinning -induced plasticity effects indicated a significant contribution of intragranular back stresses to the observed Bauschinger effect. Rietveld analysis revealed a higher rate of martensitic transformation during tension compared to compression. Throughout cycling, a0-martensite exhibited the highest phase strains such that it bears an increasing portion of the macroscopic load as its weight fraction evolves. As twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steel is one potential material for shaped charge liner due to the combination of high strength and high plasticity, deformation mechanism at high strain rate and high temperature is required to study. Compression experiments of Fe-30Mn-3Si-4Al TWIP steel were conducted using a Gleeble-1500 thermal simulation machine and a split-Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) between 298 and 1073 K at strain rates of 10-3 and 700 s-1, respectively. A high manganese TRIP-TWIP steel was cold rolled to 42% thickness reduction and isochronally annealed between 600 to 900 °C for 300 s. The microstructural evolution during annealing was studied by high resolution electron back-scattering diffraction. After cold rolling, the steel comprised predominant fraction of α′-martensite, a small fraction of blocky ε-martensite and a trace fraction of retained austenite (γ). During annealing, the reversion of ε and α′ martensite to γ was followed by the recrystallisation of γ. High-speed steel (HSS) materials are universally used as work rolls for the hot rolling of stainless steels. Their use has increased the output of the rolling mill and decreased roll material consumption and grinding. Sticking defects often occur, however, during the hot rolling process. In this article, extreme pressure (EP) additives were dropped on the HSS samples at high temperature. This paper introduces a method for determination of equivalent linear electromagnetic parameters (constant complex permeability and electrical conductivity) of nonlinear magnetic steel, which can be used in a time-harmonic finite-element simulation to yield the same losses in the volume of that material as the measured ones. The conductivity and the static hysteresis loop of the steel have been measured, from which complex permeability as a function of flux density has been extracted. A combination of acrylic binder and flame-retardant ingredients was used to synthesize the solvent-borne intumescent coatings designed for steel substrates. The influences of individual and various combinations of flame-retardant fillers on the fire protection and mechanical properties of the coatings were characterized by using Bunsen burner, thermogravimetric analysis, limiting oxygen index, field emission scanning electron microscopy, freeze thaw cycles, static immersion and pull-off type equipment. It was found that the combination of aluminium hydroxide (Al(OH)(3)) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) has significantly improved the fire protection, thermal stability and water resistance of the coating.
