A Family Affair: Whaling As Native American Household Strategy On Eastern Long Island, New York, Emily Button

Northeast Historical Archaeology

Nineteenth-century Native Americans from the northeastern United States became locally famous as mariners in the commercial whaling fleet. In the struggle to protect their small land bases and maintain their communities, going to sea became part of household practices for cultural and economic survival. From approximately 1800 through 1880, indigenous whaling families from Long Island used wages from commercial whaling to combat the limitations of land, credit, and capital that they faced on and off reservations. Whaling’s opportunities supported household formation and property accumulation among Shinnecock and Montaukett people for three generations, but whaling’s instability and risk meant that these …

James Connolly, born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1868, was an Irish socialist who would go on to be a leading member of the 1916 Easter Rebellion in Ireland. From an early age he became involved in the socialist movement through groups such as the Scottish Socialist Federation and the Independent Labor Party. A self-educated man well read in the socialist and political literature of his day, Connolly eventually made his way back to Ireland, forming his own socialist group, the Irish Socialist Republican Party. Very few studies of any kind exist on the historical or contemporary Albanian- American community. Prior to 1990 the fairly homogenous Albanian-American community was subject of Dennis Nagi’s 1982 project, titled Ethnic Community as it Applies to a Less Visible National Group: The Albanian Community of Boston, Massachusetts, which studied modes of assimilation adopted by the multiple generations of Albanian-American members of St. George Orthodox Cathedral in the Greater Boston area, classifying them using four traditional models of assimilation: Anglo-Conformity, the Melting Pot, Cultural Pluralism, and Acculturation-but-not-Assimilation. This paper examines the legal controversy concerning New Central Company’s attempt to execute a public taking of the land of the Georges Creek Coal and Iron Company for its private use to build a railroad. This paper analyzes the significance of the case within the social, economic, and political context of the town of Lonaconing in Allegany County, Western Maryland, where the parties were situated. This paper also traces the procedural history of the case, including its appearance before the Allegany Circuit Court in 1872, and before the Maryland Court of Appeals in 1873 and 1874.
