Deposition, Conjecture, And The Word Of Nod, Victor Vaughn
Deposition, Conjecture, And The Word Of Nod, Victor Vaughn
Theses and Dissertations
My thesis involved mixed medium drawings based on written colonial papers regarding the beginning of a border war between the colonies of Maryland and Pennsylvania. To fill in the fragmented historical information, the project incorporated period artifacts as merged and manipulated by contemporary technology and the internet’s ethos.

A Crusade Against The “Cowboy”?: Austrian Anti-Americanism During The Presidency Of George W. Bush, 2001-2009, Brandon J. Keene
University of New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This essay examines anti-Americanism in Austria throughout George W. Bush’s presidency, and Austrians’ response to Bush’s neoconservative team of advisers and his military actions in Iraq following the September 11, 2001 attacks in New York and Washington. For the first time in a century, a disposition of general hostility towards the United States came from both the Austrian Left and Right during the Bush years. Austrians’ latent notions of negativity towards the United States grew inflamed over Bush’s alienation of Western Europe and his determination to go to war against the Saddam regime in Iraq. Austrian anti-Americanism began to subside …
Power, Subjectivity, And Life In Spain: A Continuation Of Elite Power, Matthew Mason
Power, Subjectivity, And Life In Spain: A Continuation Of Elite Power, Matthew Mason
Master's Theses
On December 20, Spain will hold national elections to determine the new prime minister and national and local parliaments. These elections will be another crossroads in the long history of Spain. The elections come about in a political and social atmosphere of ‘change’ and ‘regeneration,’ marked by the rise of two new political parties, Podemos and Ciudanos. These parties are the new forces in the political scene in Spain. This atmosphere of change is the result of the 2008 economic crisis. The economic crisis of 2008 was not only an economic crisis in Spain, but it provoked a political and …

Dsr-Tka: Reflective Thoughts, Larry Schnoor
Speaker & Gavel
When I was asked to write a short article about Delta Sigma Rho – Tau Kappa Alpha for the 50th anniversary issue of the Speaker and Gavel, I had no idea of how the project would bring so many memories. As with many former directors of forensic programs that were involved with DSR-TKA, I realized that when I had the opportunity to visit with some of them, we would have some memories we shared about a specific DSR-TKA national tournament. In doing some research for this article however, many additional memories came floating back into my mind.
"Permanent Adaptation" - The Ndt's Last 50 Years, Allan Louden
"Permanent Adaptation" - The Ndt's Last 50 Years, Allan Louden
Speaker & Gavel
It remains a surprise I have been involved with competitive debate for five decades, a sobering self- reflection. Viewed more charitably, participating in history imparts a certain authority, a wisdom reserved to longevity, even as one’s memory reconstructs. This essay purports to provide a history of the National Debate Tournament for roughly the last 50 years. Doing justice to the historical sweep would be a book-length project, this summary much more modest. The essay is inevitably selective, recounted from a particular point of view. History never allows more. It has been my experience that there are enduring prospects for organizations …
Traditions Of Eloquence: The Jesuits And Modern Rhetorical Studies [Appendix], Cinthia Gannett, John Brereton
Traditions Of Eloquence: The Jesuits And Modern Rhetorical Studies [Appendix], Cinthia Gannett, John Brereton
Religion
This groundbreaking collection explores the important ways Jesuits have employed rhetoric, the ancient art of persuasion and the current art of communications, from the sixteenth century to the present. Much of the history of how Jesuit traditions contributed to the development of rhetorical theory and pedagogy has been lost, effaced, or dispersed. As a result, those interested in Jesuit education and higher education in the United States, as well as scholars and teachers of rhetoric, are often unaware of this living 450-year-old tradition. Written by highly regarded scholars of rhetoric, composition, education, philosophy, and history, many based at Jesuit colleges …
Mons Maiorum: Roman Aristocracy And The Palatine Hill's Appropriated Memory, Charles T. Rainville Iii
Mons Maiorum: Roman Aristocracy And The Palatine Hill's Appropriated Memory, Charles T. Rainville Iii
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Mons Maiorum arguest against the all-to-common a line of thinking among some scholars of ancient Rome: that house exchange of “ancient families surviving in genetic and property continuity [is] not characteristic of Rome.” This belief relies fundamentally on evidence from Roman authors after the proscriptions of the first century BC, when long-established aristocratic families had been removed from the landscape of the Palatine, and Roman memory. It is thus short sighted not to consider the depth of myths, physical monuments, and Roman customs as evidence for a close association of generations of Romans living in family property with a special …
Brewing Identity: The Tavern’S Imprint On The American Revolution, Cailin Edgar
Brewing Identity: The Tavern’S Imprint On The American Revolution, Cailin Edgar
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
This thesis examines the role of the tavern in late eighteenth-century America and the many ways in which they helped support, sustain, and determine the outcome of the movement toward Independence. Taking the argument one step further, the paper focuses on the intersection of tavern culture and print materials to underscore the multidimensionality of this public discursive space as a platform for print to come to life, exposing a more wide-reaching population of the colonists to the same material, and thus cultivating in the process a common intellectual experience between otherwise-detached New World neighbors. This study is located primarily in …
Fata And Fanda: The Role Of Fate In The Speech And Silence Of Aeneas, Megan C. Lescault
Fata And Fanda: The Role Of Fate In The Speech And Silence Of Aeneas, Megan C. Lescault
History & Classics Undergraduate Theses
Virgil’s Aeneid is one of the most influential works in the Latin literary tradition and moreover, in the entire Western tradition. It has been read and studied for more than two millennia, and it remains a critical focus of modern classical scholarship. In particular, great attention has been devoted to the literary merits of the poem’s many famous speeches. This thesis specifically considers the role played by fate in the speech and silence of the epic hero Aeneas. As Aeneas becomes increasingly aware of his fate and his duties, he adopts a new manner of speaking. After Mercury, the messenger …

Chinese Strategic Culture: Part 1 - The Heritage From The Past, Rosita Dellios
Rosita Dellios
This paper investigates contemporary Chinese defence thinking from the point of view of its strategic culture. Such an undertaking is timely in view of heightened threat perceptions about a militarily strengthening China. While this paper does not concern itself with addressing such suspicions directly, it hopes to contribute to informed discussion by refocussing the issue onto a larger historical and philosophical screen. An identification of the PRC's traditional strategic thinking in the form of people's war and its philosophical antecedents may not at first appear relevant to contemporary China's security needs. It is the premise of this paper, however, that …

From A Chat In The Parlor To Viral Music Videos: An Analysis Of Music As A Social Occasion, Emma Plotnik
Student Scholar Symposium Abstracts and Posters
Imagine an intimate room filled with people playing cards and casually chatting, while one of Chopin’s piano sonatas plays elegantly in the background. This scenario is characteristic of the atmosphere surrounding Classical and Romantic European salons. Salons served as havens of musical discourse from the Baroque era to the early twentieth century. However, with the advancement of technology from the mid-twentieth century to the present, there has been a decline, or, arguably, even a cessation of salon life.
The aim of this project was to recreate the salon environment through the generation of the online discussion forum, "Music Soirée." To …

Becoming Respectable: A History Of Early Social Responsibility In The Las Vegas Casino Industry, Jessalynn R. Strauss
UNLV Gaming Research & Review Journal
Today’s gaming corporations actively engage with their communities by supporting nonprofit organizations and adopting environmentally friendly practices among other socially responsible actions. This research considers precursors to modern corporate social responsibility (CSR) in the gaming industry by examining the philanthropic activities of the casino owners in Las Vegas in the early days of its development. This historical look at early philanthropy in the gaming industry provides a contextual background for considering contemporary corporate social responsibility. While the gaming industry has clearly come a long way from its early ties to organized crime, an understanding of this context helps further discussion …

The Presidential Contests Of 1976-2012 And What They Mean For Who Will Win In 2016, John S. Jackson
The Simon Review (Occasional Papers of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute)
As the nation races into the 2016 presidential elections season, it is worthwhile to stop the headlong rush and take a look back and see what we may have learned from our recent history, specifically what that history can teach us about our presidential elections and their long-term impact on the political system, how public policy is made and the prospects for any party to be able to govern in modern America when the nation is so deeply divided by partisanship, ideology, geography, class and race.
The Global Architecture Of Financial Regulatory Taxes, Carlo Garbarino, Giulio Allevato
The Global Architecture Of Financial Regulatory Taxes, Carlo Garbarino, Giulio Allevato
Michigan Journal of International Law
This Article endeavors to broaden the analysis of available policy tools to address the problems created by financial crises and discusses how, in addition to direct regulation, certain tax measures having a regulatory nature may operate to address the so-called “negative externalities” often associated with those crises. There is a negative externality when an economic agent making a decision does not pay the full cost of the decision’s consequences. In such cases, the cost to society as a whole is greater than the cost borne by the individuals creating the economic impact. In practice, negative externalities result in market inefficiencies …

Poems For My Woofie The Story Of Lt. Wilfred V. Michaud, 1st Parachute Battalion, 1st Marine Division, Allison Orr
Honors Projects in English and Cultural Studies
My senior capstone project is the creation of a book of investigative poetry. The subject of the work is my grandfather, Wilfred V. Michaud. He was a lieutenant in the United States Marine Corps during World War II. The poetry addresses the history of Michaud’s battalion and the battles it fought, as well as personal stories of Michaud’s life and experience in the service. Several secondary sources were used to gain historical context for the poetry. Additionally, primary sources were used to provide information about Michaud’s personal experiences. The combination of primary and secondary sources established the necessary background and …
Undocumented Migrants As New (And Peaceful) American Revolutionaries, Daniel Morales
Undocumented Migrants As New (And Peaceful) American Revolutionaries, Daniel Morales
College of Law Faculty
This essay situates undocumented migrants in the history of the American revolutionary period. The lawbreaking of both groups produced constructive legal and social change. For example, the masses of American revolutionaries and many of their leading men fought to rid the colonies of hereditary aristocracy. Colonists had come to cherish the proto-meritocracy that had bloomed on colonial shores and rankled at local evidence of aristocratic privilege, like the Crown’s grant of landed estates to absentee English aristocrats.Today’s equivalent hereditary aristocracy is the citizenry of wealthy democracies like the United States. Hereditary citizens use immigration restrictions to reserve the wealth and …

Understanding The Essex Junto: Fear, Dissent, And Propaganda In The Early Republic, Dinah Mayo-Bobee
ETSU Faculty Works
Historians have never formed a consensus over the Essex Junto. In fact, though often associated with New England Federalists, propagandists evoked the Junto long after the Federalist Party’s demise in 1824. This article chronicles uses of the term Essex Junto and its significance as it evolved from the early republic through the 1840s.

An Interview With Barbara Roos, Joe Hogan
An Interview With Barbara Roos, Joe Hogan
Cinesthesia
Barbara Roos started teaching when Grand Valley was just a few buildings erected on a slab of midwestern prairie. Nixon was in office then, and young draftees were still being sent to Vietnam. In those days, Grand Valley – not yet a university but a cluster of colleges – was alive with the spirit of the counter-culture. William James College, among the most pedagogically experimental of the colleges, was interdisciplinary and non-departmental – it emphasized harmony between theory and practice, thought and action. At James, Roos co-founded the film and video program. In the following interview, she talks with guest …
