The enhancement of existing plant breeding techniques, such as cisgenesis, allows plant breeders to enhance an existing cultivar quicker and with little to no genetic drag. Cisgenesis is the genetic modification of a recipient plant with natural gene(s) from a sexually compatible plant. Unlike transgenesis, which is the genetic modification of a recipient plant with gene(s) from any non‐plant organism, or from a donor plant that is sexually incompatible with the recipient plant, the results of cisgenesis could occur naturally over time. Research was conducted in 2012 and 2013 to evaluate the use of saflufenacil in rice (Oryza sativa L.). Studies included a preemergence evaluation of different rates of saflufenacil in comparison to one rate of carfentrazone, a postemergence evaluation of saflufenacil at different rates and carfentrazone at one rate at different postemergence timings, an adjuvant evaluation to assess rice injury and weed control from different adjuvants when mixed with saflufenacil, a Clearfield program evaluation where saflufenacil was compared to other broadleaf herbicides in a Clearfield weed control program, and a cultivar tolerance evaluation where postemergence applications of saflufenacil were compared to …

Rice Sufficiency Officers’ Role Perception And Job Satisfaction As Agricultural Research And Extension Workers, Irene R. Tanzo, Charmaine G. Yusongco

The study determined how the Rice Sufficiency Officers (RSOs) perceived their role and their level of job satisfaction when working as agents of PhilRice to promote and deliver rice technologies as a strategy to attain rice self-sufficiency for the country. Data for the study were collected using online survey to which77 RSOs responded. Results of the study showed the RSOs perceived their role as very important, particularly the extension tasks they fulfilled. Their level of job satisfaction was very high, especially with their working relationships with supervisors and the farmers. However, their status of employment caused some degree of dissatisfaction. …

Acquisition of a complete understanding of rice starch lysophospholipids (LPLs), their biosynthetic pathways, genetic diversity, and the influence of genotype by environment interactions has been hampered by the lack of efficient high throughput extraction and analysis methods. We hypothesized a single-step aqueous n-propanol extraction combined with liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LCMS) could be employed to analyze starch LPLs in white rice. Our investigation found different grinding methods showed little effect on the final LPL detected and a simple single-step extraction with 75% n-propanol (8mL/0.15g) heated at 100 oC for two hours was as effective as an onerous multi-step extraction method. …

Seed dormancy is an important agronomic trait in cereals. Using deep dormant (N22), medium dormant (ZH11), and non-dormant (G46B) rice cultivars, we correlated seed dormancy phenotypes with abscisic acid (ABA) and gibberellin (GA) metabolism gene expression profiles and phytohormone levels during seed development and imbibition. A time course analysis of ABA and GA content during seed development showed that N22 had a high ABA level at early and middle seed developmental stages, while at late developmental stage it declined to the level of ZH11; however, its ABA/GA ratio maintained at a high level …

Rice false smut (FS), a disease caused by Ustilaginoidea virens (Cke.) Takahashi (1896), was first reported in northeastern Arkansas counties in 1997. The first objective of this research was to establish a collection of U. virens isolates from geographically diverse regions of Arkansas. Three U. virens isolates and chlamydospores from `Templeton' and `Clearfield-151' rice cultivars were used to determine the effects of temperature and pH on mycelial growth and germination. Seed-applied insecticides are the standard control method used to prevent rice water weevil (Lissorhoptrus oryzophilus Kuschel) injury to rice (Oryza sativa L.) roots, and often results in greater yields than rice that receives no seed-applied insecticide. Yield increases from seed-applied insecticides often occur even when insect pressure is low and should not cause yield loss. The research objective was to evaluate the effect of urea-nitrogen rate and seed-applied insecticide on number of rice water weevil larvae, nitrogen uptake and rice grain yield. Differences have been observed in the milling and functional properties of different rice cultivars, particularly between hybrid and pureline cultivars. Co-mingling of rice cultivars commonly occurs during harvest, storage and drying operations. Thus, there is a need to study the effect of co-mingling on the milling and functional properties of rice cultivars. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) currently uses a single methane (CH4) emissions factor of 160 kg CH4-C ha-1 for a primary rice (Oryza sativa L.) crop. The emissions factor is based on studies that do not adequately represent current management practices in Arkansas. Another concern is pre-flood fertilizer nitrogen (N) management, as the common N source, urea, is prone to loss via ammonia (NH3) volatilization. Manganese (Mn), an essential trace element, is important for plant health. In plants, Mn serves as a cofactor in essential processes such as photosynthesis, lipid biosynthesis and oxidative stress. Mn deficient plants exhibit decreased growth and yield and are more susceptible to pathogens and damage at freezing temperatures. Mn deficiency is most prominent on alkaline soils with approximately one third of the world’s soils being too alkaline for optimal crop production. The mineral concentrations in cereals are important for human health, especially for individuals who consume a cereal subsistence diet. A number of elements, such as zinc, are required within the diet, while some elements are toxic to humans, for example arsenic. In this study we carry out genome-wide association (GWA) mapping of grain concentrations of arsenic, copper, molybdenum and zinc in brown rice using an established rice diversity panel of ~300 accessions and 36.9 k single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Despite the inundation of studies on the interaction of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) with plants, investigations involving complete life cycle (i.e from seedling establishment to full maturity) are still lacking. Assessments on the nutritional value of plants cultivated to full maturity in ENMs-treated soil are also missing. Propanil has long been a staple of weed management in rice production. The introduction of IR rice allowed for the use of imidazolinone herbicides in crop for the control of red rice. Six studies were conducted in 2011 and 2012 to evaluate the weed control interactions, synergistic, antagonistic, or additive, of imazethapyr or imazamox when mixed in a single application with propanil, thiobencarb, or a pre-packaged mixture of propanil plus thiobencarb. Bacterial panicle blight is among the three most limiting diseases of rice production in the United States. Yield loss up to 40% has been reported from rice fields severely infested with bacterial panicle blight. The disease is caused by Burkholderia glumae and B. gladioli. Although, both species produce similar symptoms and are closely related, but B. glumae strains are more aggressive and cause more severe symptoms on rice. Bacterial panicle bight is difficult to manage in the absence of effective chemical control measures. Rapid and early disease detection is needed to avoid severe yield losses.
