At the Agricultural Information Center (AIC) we are trying to provide relevant content for Cooperative Extension personnel located throughout the state of Kentucky. The College of Agriculture, Food, and Environment is the University of Kentucky's largest college and has employees located in all of the 120 Kentucky counties. Therefore, we are working to create and maintain relevant outreach services for a geographically and culturally diverse user group. Throughout this process, we have realized that creating online tutorials and virtual training sessions is not enough to support outreach services—we must stay visible. To stay visible, we have visited regional meetings and …
Adoption Of Citizen Science Practices: A Case Study Of The Billfish Foundation’S Tag And Release Online Database, Daniel Dinicola
Adoption Of Citizen Science Practices: A Case Study Of The Billfish Foundation’S Tag And Release Online Database, Daniel Dinicola
Open Access Theses
Almost the entirety of our understanding of billfish science comes from recreational fishing and constituent based tag and release programs. A uniform, global resource where anglers can participate and view their efforts in action will greatly contribute to the understanding, conservation, and management of these mysterious animals. It was this rationale that led The Billfish Foundation (TBF) to create the Online Tag and Release Database (TROD) as a companion to its existing Tag and Release Program. The TROD was designed to galvanize the sportfishing community and streamline how constituent anglers report data. Significant portions of active TBF members have not …

A Master Plan For Riverside Park, New London, Connecticut: A Case Study Of The Project And An Evaluation Of Its Service Learning Component, Madeline Rose Schad
Master's Theses
The Community Research and Design Collaborative (CRDC) is the outreach organization of the University of Connecticut's Landscape Architecture Program. This project, performed by CRDC, took place in Riverside Park which is located in the northern portion of New London, Connecticut. It began with developing a master plan for the park. During the master plan development, an issue with the stormwater system at the adjacent Winthrop Elementary School came to light. A study was performed in order to develop a solution to the problem that could be incorporated into the master plan for the park. Throughout the project, a series of …

Small School, Big Reach: Open Access Outreach On A Liberal Arts College Campus, Janelle L. Wertzberger
All Musselman Library Staff Works
The liberal arts college environment provides opportunities for campus-wide engagement of open access issues that may differ from those at larger institutions. Because we support fewer campus authors, we are able to provide a high level of service. Librarians’ close connections with faculty and students allow us to move beyond articles and theses and solicit a wide range of scholarly and creative works to share in our repository. In addition, we’ve fostered conversations about open access, open textbooks, altmetrics, and copyright among faculty, staff, and students. This poster will present a snapshot of a variety of outreach and education strategies …

Hiding Peas In Their Mashed Potatoes: Teaching Faculty Information Literacy On The Sly, Amy E. Kammerman
LOEX Conference Proceedings 2012
Are your faculty picky eaters? Do your faculty members make a face when they hear the phrase “information literacy”? In an effort to get faculty to use information literacy skills and pass this knowledge to their students, sometimes librarians must use stealth and ingenuity. This session will focus on innovative ways that information literacy can be incorporated into already existing programs with faculty and also provide ideas on trying something a little different to get faculty to try even a tiny bite of information literacy.

Over The Hurdles: Barriers To Social Media Use In Extension Offices, Elizabeth Newbury, Lee Humphreys, Lucas Guess
Over The Hurdles: Barriers To Social Media Use In Extension Offices, Elizabeth Newbury, Lee Humphreys, Lucas Guess
The Journal of Extension
The research reported here explored the perceived barriers to social media use by Extension educators. Using a sequential mixed method approach, the research was composed of two parts. The qualitative study used interview data (n=27) from Wisconsin and New York Extension educators. The quantitative study gathered data from surveying Extension offices in New York State (n=42). We argue that key barriers to adoption of social media as an outreach platform include perceptions around time and control. Ultimately, we recommend that Extension educators receive focused, hands-on training to more efficiently and effectively use social media for education and outreach efforts.

Understanding Factors Determining Early Termination From A Government Assistance Program For Maternal And Child Health: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program For Women, Infants And Children (Wic), Anthony Dominic Panzera
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to understand why individuals enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) fail to retrieve food vouchers, miss WIC appointments, and become inactive in program components. In Kentucky, mothers who fail to pick up food instruments for 60 days are automatically terminated from the program. The specific research questions that guided this study are: (1) Which segments of enrollees are at greatest and least risks of nonparticipation in the WIC program? (2) How do predisposing, enabling and need characteristics impact WIC nonparticipation among eligible mothers? (3) How do WIC …

Rethinking Visual Resources Centers In The Digital Age: Case Studies At The University Of Georgia And The University Of Michigan, Courtney Baron, Molly Schoen
Rethinking Visual Resources Centers In The Digital Age: Case Studies At The University Of Georgia And The University Of Michigan, Courtney Baron, Molly Schoen
Faculty Scholarship
Visual Resource Centers are facing many challenges—and opportunities—in the wake of the digital era. Since their beginnings as slide libraries, many VRCs have had missions across college campuses to serve the image needs of faculty in art-related fields. More recently, visual resources professionals have guided faculty and other colleagues into the digital era by providing digitization services and support. But as faculty and other clientele have become more tech-savvy over the years, and as high quality art images have become more readily available than ever before, the fate of VRCs and similar departments is at risk. In order to stay …
Outreach Practices Of A Small College Counseling Center: A Comprehensive Model To Serve The College Community, Jessica R. Ferriero
Outreach Practices Of A Small College Counseling Center: A Comprehensive Model To Serve The College Community, Jessica R. Ferriero
Doctoral Dissertations
Over the past 10 years college counseling centers (CCCs) have been urged to broaden their focus considerably and to serve the entire campus community due to increases in student mental health issues. Engaging in outreach efforts is one way to address campus wide needs. However, few research efforts have been conducted to systematically investigate how outreach is practiced at a small college. The dialogue around outreach has focused on single programs at large institutions rather than the network of interventions that occur on a campus. The purpose of this study is to understand the web of relationships between a counseling …

GCM outputs such as CMIP3 are available via network access to PCMDI web site. Meteorological researchers are familiar with the usage of the GCM data, but the most of researchers other than meteorology such as agriculture, civil engineering, etc., and general people are not familiar with the GCM. There are some difficulties to use GCM; 1) to download the enormous quantity of data, 2) to understand the GCM methodology, parameters and grids. In order to provide a quick access way to GCM, Climate Change Information Database has been developed. The purpose of the database is to bridge the users and …

Please Come In!: Transitioning From No Access To An Open Door In The Special Collections And Archives, Ashley Todd-Diaz
Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
After four years of being closed to patrons due to a combination of a mold outbreak, renovation, and transitioning to a new location, the Emporia State University Special Collections and Archives reopened in fall 2012. While the department was closed, staff members worked hard to care for the collections, reply to patron requests, and prepare to open our doors again; however, after all that work we were not prepared for the lack of patrons walking through the doors. This paper shares our successes and lessons learned, as well as offers ideas for implementing innovative outreach strategies that challenge a variety …

An Examination Of Embedded Librarian Ideas And Practices: A Critical Bibliography., Carl R. Andrews
Publications and Research
Although this annotated bibliography is primarily targeted to library science professionals in an academic setting, the literature examined can very easily support secondary and college level general education teaching initiatives. The majority of the literature examined in the list comes from journal articles. The author focused primarily on actual case studies that take place in an undergraduate academic setting. Attention was paid to community colleges and schools where there are students in need of remediation. The author was also interested in seeking out literature that addressed the needs of student academic success after an embedded program was implemented. Non-traditional embedded …

Freedom Is Everybody's Business: Using Multi-Faceted Outreach To Draw Student Attention To Local Archival Collections On The Civil Rights Movement Of The 1960s, Joshua Youngblood
University Libraries Faculty Publications and Presentations
As the recent celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington demonstrated, numerous digital projects and numerous scholarly and popular print publications have made the grander stories and lessons of the civil rights movement of the 1950s and 1960s widely available. But what about the lesser known heroes and the local and regional episodes that have not received the same level of interest? Manuscript collections that capture those hidden stories, integral to the achievements—and setbacks—of the Civil Rights Movement, can provide students access to richer understandings of the social and political watersheds of the era. By utilizing select …

Using Focus Groups To Assess Educational Programming Needs In Forestry, Emily F. Vanderford, Jason S. Gordon, Andrew J. Londo, Ian A. Munn
The Journal of Extension
Extension professionals are continually faced with the challenge of effectively communicating relevant information to an ever-evolving audience with diverse interests. Using focus group data, this article highlights specific educational programming needs of nonindustrial private forest landowners (NIPFs) in Mississippi. Findings indicate NIPFs are more likely to adopt new ideas if educational programming is tailored to their specific needs, consequently indicating the need to group the audience by their interests. Data also emphasize the importance of employing new technology as means for communicating more efficiently.

In a college or university setting, archivists are often charged with developing innovative ways to inspire campus users to think expansively and creatively about primary sources. Individual presentations will address developing a fictional collection that can be mobilized and expanded to fulfill learning objectives across multiple disciplines; adapting an interactive game from NYPL to promote and generate interest in archives during New Student Week; and collaborating with faculty and French majors on a grant-funded project to build and promote collections. Other presentations will extend the conversation to assessment and will consider integrating primary source literacy in first-year library instruction classes …
