Assessment And Treatment Of Elopement In Young Children With Autism, Ivette Andrade Dec 2014

Assessment And Treatment Of Elopement In Young Children With Autism, Ivette Andrade

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Elopement, leaving a caregivers side without permission or supervision, is a behavior that is more prevalent among children with autism as compared to their typically developing peers. With potentially fatal consequences (e.g., drowning, being run over, abducted), it is reported to cause high levels of stress for caregivers. In the present study, we evaluate the assessment and treatment of elopement using a multicomponent treatment package to address the multiple functions of elopement. The treatment consisted of an antecedent treatment procedure, blocking and differential reinforcement of other behaviors with extinction (DRO w/ EXT). An ABAB reversal design was utilized to assess …

Assessing The Effects Of Derived Relational Responding On Intraverbal Use Of Same-Opposite And More Than-Less Than Relations In Children With Autism, Jane P. White Oct 2014

Assessing The Effects Of Derived Relational Responding On Intraverbal Use Of Same-Opposite And More Than-Less Than Relations In Children With Autism, Jane P. White

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Relational Frame Theory provides an analysis of verbal behavior involving a focus on the development of relational operants which are seen as a basis for language. From this basis, a framework is provided for establishing relational networks in individuals who lack derived relational ability. Establishment of relational frames may increase the probability of responding relationally to novel instances and use of the specific relational frames during social interactions; therefore, training verbal relations in accordance with an RFT approach may enhance intraverbal responding and facilitate the emergence of untrained responses. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the emergence of …

Performance Deficits In Aging Human Service Settings And A Behavior Analytic Approach To Remediation, Kendra F. Johnson Jul 2014

Performance Deficits In Aging Human Service Settings And A Behavior Analytic Approach To Remediation, Kendra F. Johnson

Research Papers

The staff members working in all human service settings have major effects on the populations in which they are working. Staff enjoyment and their preferences also play a role in their work performance. Work performance, specifically in aging settings, is an understudied area of applied behavioral research. Thus, giving focus to identifying performance deficits may assist with increasing job task enjoyment and improving job performance in human service related positions, especially when incentives for job performance is not available due to limited budgets of non-profit organizations. Studies, to date, have focused much attention on preference instead of actual job performance. …

Testing The Correlation Between Response Latency, Derivation, And Complexity, Jeffrey Ryan Oliver Jun 2014

Testing The Correlation Between Response Latency, Derivation, And Complexity, Jeffrey Ryan Oliver

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates the constructs of Derivation and Complexity and how they relate to latency. Derivation and Complexity are theoretical constructs that have been posited as two of the main factors in differences in latency to responding in implicit measures such as the Implicit Relational Assessment Procedure (IRAP) and the Implicit Association Task (IAT). This study trained participants to relate two groups of novel stimuli in a linear fashion and then tested their latency to responding to derived relations (relations based on previously trained relations, but not directly trained themselves). The study then analyzed participant's latency to responding after dividing …

Merge Of Behavior Analysis Procedures Into A Speech-Language Pathology Autism Clinic, Elizabeth Simons May 2014

Merge Of Behavior Analysis Procedures Into A Speech-Language Pathology Autism Clinic, Elizabeth Simons

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This study developed applied behavior analysis skills in a different discipline through training and coaching speech-language pathology graduate students providing therapy services in a program for children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder. Two graduate students in applied behavior analysis trained 9 graduate students in speechlanguage pathology in 3 concepts: function of behavior, positive reinforcement and differential reinforcement. These trainings occurred within the framework of a systematic multiple baseline design. After training, each participant received bug-in-theear coaching on the use of positive reinforcement daily for 5 days during therapy delivery. At the end of each day therapists developed a list of …

Procedural-Reasoning Architecture For Applied Behavior Analysis-Based Instructions, Edmon Begoli May 2014

Procedural-Reasoning Architecture For Applied Behavior Analysis-Based Instructions, Edmon Begoli

Doctoral Dissertations

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex developmental disability affecting as many as 1 in every 88 children. While there is no known cure for ASD, there are known behavioral and developmental interventions, based on demonstrated efficacy, that have become the predominant treatments for improving social, adaptive, and behavioral functions in children.

Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA)-based early childhood interventions are evidence based, efficacious therapies for autism that are widely recognized as effective approaches to remediation of the symptoms of ASD. They are, however, labor intensive and consequently often inaccessible at the recommended levels.

Recent advancements in socially assistive robotics and …

Family Perspectives On The Ontario Autism Intervention Program, Michelle Turan Jan 2014

Family Perspectives On The Ontario Autism Intervention Program, Michelle Turan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The Autism Intervention Program (AIP) in Ontario has been in place providing intensive behavioural intervention (IBI) to children with autism spectrum disorder since 1999 (Perry et al., 2008). This IBI program involves teaching children using applied behaviour analytic (ABA) principles for 25-40 hours per week, in the family home or in an IBI centre. The use of ABA-based methods for teaching skills and decreasing problem behaviour to children with autism has the most evidence to date, and therefore remains in high demand by families within the province. The purpose of the current study was to examine parent perspectives about the …
