Muchos Mentores En Iowa: The Pedagogy Of Student To Student Mentoring In Information Literacy, Julia Bauder, Beth Bohstedt, Phillip Jones

LOEX Conference Proceedings 2011

At Grinnell College we believe that students can be the best teachers and that lasting learning also happens outside of the classroom. The Grinnell College Libraries' peer mentoring program is rooted in these beliefs. Our program has two components: advanced research help provided by reference assistants (RAs) at the reference desk; and basic information service provided by all students working at our public service desks. Throughout this presentation, attendees will be challenged to consider if peer information service is appropriate for their libraries and to articulate initial steps to explore and implement such a service.

Journal of Western Archives

Libraries at small- and mid-sized academic institutions continue to re-define themselves as journal and monograph collections go online, budgets and staffing remain flat or reduced, and value to student learning and the institutional mission needs to be apparent. This all spells opportunity for archival programs which, with a strong focus on advocacy and daylighting formerly hidden collections of unique content, can re-invigorate the library and spotlight the active role today's service- and user-oriented archives can play in supporting student research, fostering ties with constituents, and ensuring the preservation of an institution's stories and history. A recently-completed National Historical Publications and …

The Forgotten Population: Using Assessment To Uncover The Library Needs Of Graduate Students, Melissa Vetter, Tara Baillargeon, Regina Beard, Pat Berge

University Libraries Presentations

Graduate student library needs often differ from those of undergraduates and faculty. Focus groups at three separate institutions seek to better understand the needs of a user population whose demands are often great, but whose voices are not always heard. Presenters will highlight commonalities and differences in the findings, identify opportunities for libraries to better serve this population and suggest methods for taking what is learned about graduate student needs and translating them into action.

The purpose of this project is to examine and shed light on an approach or approaches to effectively transform service beyond the walls of the congregation to intentional, appropriate, and relevant service within the community. This subject matter has the potential of transforming congregations from a predominant notion of interaction with self to interaction with organizations and individuals who are part of the church's mission field. In addition, there …

Changing Strategies For Electronic Theses And Dissertations: Communication Between An Academic Library, Graduate School, Academic Departments, And Students, Lyndsey E. Calico, Cleophus V. Price, Adrian K. Ho, Jonathan Garrett

Adrian K. Ho

Technology has eliminated the need for paper copies of theses and dissertations in an academic library. The latest practice for receiving, reviewing, and archiving graduate student scholarship is to have students submit their electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs) to an institutional repository (IR). The University of Kentucky Graduate School and the University of Kentucky Libraries have teamed to create a new workflow for the online submission of ETDs to UKnowledge, the University's IR. To ensure the success of the workflow, clear and efficient communications between the library, the graduate school, academic departments, and students are imperative. This presentation addresses the …

Born Digital: Event-Driven Archives, Vincent Capone

Graduate History Conference, UMass Boston

The growth of the internet has brought numerous tools and opportunities for archivists to both enhance their collections and reach out to potential patrons. Archives across the globe have begun immense digitization efforts to bring collections into the digital age and make them accessible to a broader audience. But what challenges face new archives whose collections are born-digital? How do these archives prove that they are indeed an archival facility and not simply a memory institution? These questions have risen around numerous digital archives born in the past decade to document and commemorate social events and tragic disasters, including the …

Using Social Media To Involve The Public In Wildlife Research—The Snamp Fisher Sock Collection Drive, Susie Kocher, Anne Lombardo, Rick A. Sweitzer Feb 2013

Using Social Media To Involve The Public In Wildlife Research—The Snamp Fisher Sock Collection Drive, Susie Kocher, Anne Lombardo, Rick A. Sweitzer

The Journal of Extension

The University of California Cooperative Extension used social media to solicit donations to support research on the Pacific fisher, a rare forest-dwelling weasel, conducted by UC scientists. The social media campaign included blog and Facebook postings, news releases, and tweets requesting donations of single socks. Socks were donated from around the state and nation, with 82% coming from urban areas. The drive was successful at securing resources to support wildlife research while at the same time extending outreach to new non-local audiences. The major challenge was developing the local logistical support to deal with the overwhelming influx of donations.
