The Social Construction Of Childhood Bullying Through U.S. News Media, Rachel Wayne
The Social Construction Of Childhood Bullying Through U.S. News Media, Rachel Wayne
Journal of Contemporary Anthropology
For the past ten years, childhood bullying has been heavily discussed in public discourse, through increased news reporting, discussion in awareness campaigns, and court proceedings. The characterization of bullying in the media is symptomatic of this discourse; moreover, it reflects the social construction of bullying. In particular, news media’s emotional and scientific portrayal of bullying has inspired criminalization of the act and defined bullying as a normative trend of deviant behavior—a marked difference from its previous portrayal as an isolated but treatable act. In this paper, I report the findings from a content analysis of articles from mainstream U.S. news …

Tollbooths And Newsstands On The Information Superhighway, Brad A. Greenberg
Tollbooths And Newsstands On The Information Superhighway, Brad A. Greenberg
Michigan Telecommunications & Technology Law Review
Countering the perception that speech limitations affecting distribution necessarily reduce access to information, this Essay proffers that copyright expansions actually can increase access and thereby serve important copyright and First Amendment values. In doing so, this discussion contributes to the growing literature and two recent Supreme Court opinions discussing whether copyright law and First Amendment interests can coexist.

Anchoring The News With Comedy: Considering The Role Of Critique In News Through An Analysis Of "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart", Tabitha Louise Simenc
Anchoring The News With Comedy: Considering The Role Of Critique In News Through An Analysis Of "The Daily Show With Jon Stewart", Tabitha Louise Simenc
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the role of critique in news and its necessity in a media landscape focused on journalistic ideals of objectivity. Using The Daily Show with Jon Stewart as a case study, this research first, examines the way in which the program fulfills the normative tasks of the media and can be considered news. Second, it considers how the program, and others like it, operate outside the realm of traditional news media and are, consequently, not subject to expectations of objectivity, potentially allowing for greater critique of powerful political, economic and media entities. Finally, the role of news in …
Agriculture At Eleven: Visual Rhetoric And News Media Portrayals Of Agriculture, Annie R. Specht, Tracy Rutherford
Agriculture At Eleven: Visual Rhetoric And News Media Portrayals Of Agriculture, Annie R. Specht, Tracy Rutherford
Journal of Applied Communications
Modern agricultural practices have become increasingly popular topics for news media outlets; thus, the growing scrutiny placed on production agriculture warrants a study of the images incorporated into television news stories of industry-related topics. Using a visual-rhetoric framework, the researchers conducted a survey of college students who were shown still images taken from a CBS Evening News broadcast about drug-resistant pathogens and their connection to antibiotic use in livestock. Participants were asked to identify the topic of the news story based on the images, to describe their affective response to that topic, and to identify the visual cues that led …
