In this paper, I will detail the film making techniques that my crew and I employed while making AM800, my thesis film at the University of New Orleans. I will detail the creative and technical steps we took, from the earliest stages of idea conceptualization to the final phases of post-production and screening. During my recounting of this process, I will discuss our creative goals, the challenges that we faced while achieving these goals, and the resulting product's effectiveness as a narrative short film. Cinema In The Digital Age: A Rebuttal To Lev Manovich, Barbara Cail

Philosophy

In his book The Language of New Media, Lev Manovich claims the index is an ontological condition of cinema. Manovich asserts digital cinema can never be indexical and therefore has fundamentally altered the very nature of cinema, reducing it to a form of animation. This paper offers a refutation of Manovich’s redefinition of cinema, showing that digital cinema can be indexical, but indexicality is not an ontological condition of cinema.

Disney's Hercules is an apt modern reception of the ancient mythology of Herakles, acknowledging ancient and modern sources surrounding three types of classical hero: the archetypal hero, influenced by the ideas of Joseph Campbell; the Pan-Hellenic hero, distilled from ancient Greek exempla of heroism from epic and other genres of ancient literature; and the tragic hero, inspired by the heroic criteria presented in Aristotle's Poetics. By adapting these heroic types from their traditional ancient source myths, Disney's Hercules produces a new, contemporary definition of heroism—one informed by modern, Western family values. It also focuses on the effect of the Law 19327 of 1973 , which was responsible for the formation of a group of influential filmmakers led by Francisco Lombardi. At the beginning of the 21st century, female directors like Claudia Llosa and Rosario Garcia Montero achieved recognition for their cinematic visions of a traumatic Peruvian past. The mysterious and dark atmosphere, the overwhelming focus on the main characters, and the constant contrast of dark and light in Twilight (2009) recall traditional Christian religious imagery. But more that that, this paper will argue that Twilight, the first of the romantic fantasy films adapted from the successful book series by Stephenie Meyer, draws explicitly on traditional Catholic religious imagery and ceremony to engender religious devotion in its fans. Images from the first Twilight film suggest that the creators of Twilight used religious imagery to captivate their audience. Therein lies your hope of salvation. The perfect lie will save you from lesser lies but will also protect you from the destructive austerity of the truth. The purpose of this thesis is to approach adapting a comic book into a film in a unique way. With so many comic-to-film adaptations following the trends of action movies, my goal was to adapt the popular comic book, Batman, into a screenplay that is not an action film. Mechanism Of Unidirectional Liquid-Crystal Alignment On Polyimides With Linearly Polarized Ultraviolet Light Exposure, M. Nishikawa, Bahman Taheri, John L. West

Unidirectional liquid-crystal(LC) alignment by a linearly polarized ultraviolet light(UV) exposure was examined using two types of polyimide (PI). PI with a fluorene unit incorporated in a side chain showed LC alignment perpendicular to those of conventional PIs, i.e., perpendicular to the rubbing direction and parallel to the exposure polarization of UV. The results of the dichroic ratio measurement of LCcells,UVabsorption spectra,birefringence, infrared absorption spectra, and PI conformation calculations using molecular mechanics suggest that the photodecomposition of PI by UV exposure produces anisotropic van der Waals forces, which align LC along its optical axis.

The surface alignment of lyotropic chromonic liquid crystals can not only be planar (tangential) but also homeotropic, with self-assembled aggregates perpendicular to the substrate, as demonstrated by mapping optical retardation and by three-dimensional imaging of the director field. With time, the homeotropic nematic undergoes a transition into a tangential state. The anchoring transition is discontinuous and can be described by a double-well anchoring potential with two minima corresponding to tangential and homeotropic orientation.

This paper explores the latent political meanings of cinematic representations of capitalist childhood. The films it examines—three adaptations of the Oliver Twist story, Slumdog Millionnaire and a lesser-known Korean film, Treeless Mountain—have much in common: they feature abandoned or orphaned child characters who negotiate precarious existences in a rapacious crisis-ridden capitalist world. But the filmmakers’ evolving imaginings of childhood—from the Victorian vulnerable child to more postmodern understandings of children as agents in their own right—invite distinct political responses. Binary RuO₂-HfO₂ films on Ti substrates were prepared by a thermal decomposition method. cyclic voltammetric and charge/discharge properties of the RuO₂-HfO₂ electrodes were characterized. It was determined that the incorporation of HfO₂ into RuO ₂ greatly improved the capacitive properties of the material. The RuO₂-HfO₂ electrodes showed excellent cyclic stability, with no decay in charge capability during 1000 CV cycles in acidic solution. A nominal content of 50 mol% RuO₂ and 50 mol% HfO₂ gave the highest specific capacitance of 789.3 F/g (RuO₂). The excellent capacitive …

Suicide among older adults is an increasing mental health concern in the United States, and yet depression and other signs of suicide often go unnoticed. The film and discussion guide "Talking with Dolores" was funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health to increase awareness of warnings of depression and suicide in the elderly and demonstrate ways of conversing with them about suicide. While the 2008 financial crisis fundamentally altered the capital structure of the indie film, the JOBS Act will fundamentally augment capital sources available to the indie film industry at the time it is most starved. The onset of the U.S. recession, triggered by the 2008 economic crisis, substantially reduced the capital markets for the production of independent films. In an effort to stimulate economic growth for business start-ups, Congress passed the JOBS Act in March 2012. Media portrayals of crime have been linked to biased information processing and beliefs about society and personal risks of victimization. Much of this research has either focused on relatively holistic analyses of media consumption, or on the analysis of elements of only a few types of crime (e.g., murder, rape, assault). Research to date has overlooked how media portray stalking in interpersonal relationships. This study content analyzed 51 mainstream movies with prominent stalking themes to compare and contrast such depictions with the actual scientific data about stalking. Low energy metal ion implantation has been used to combine an easy “bottom-up” way of creating and tuning different topographic structures on submicron to micrometer scales with the embedding of a metallic element-rich functionalized layer at the surface for a variety of scientific and technological applications. An epitaxial La0.8Ca0.2MnO3/LaAlO 3 (LCMO/LAO) thin film was fabricated using the pulsed laser deposition technique to evaluate the correlation between the crystal structure and the magnetocaloric effect. In our study, the LCMO film was 200 nm in thickness and appeared to have a strong out-of plane texture. We found that each column in the LCMO thin film layer is a domain which has a different ordering direction. These microscopic feature results in anisotropic properties of magnetization, entropy, and relative cooling power. The film exhibited a paramagnetic-to-ferromagnetic second order phase transition at 249 K. The lack of any hysteresis loss also …

Yttrium barium copper oxide (YBCO) film was synthesized by a metal-organic deposition (MOD) process with fluorine-free Y and Cu precursor. The precursor solution with Sm addition enabled further improvement of the thickness and uniformity of precursor films. The calcination and firing processes were studied, and the precursor film was successfully converted to dense and uniform YBCO film on LaAlO3 (LAO) substrate after annealing in a wet Ar and O2 atmosphere. The measured critical current density (J c) value was about 80 A/cm-w (2.66 MA/cm2). The trifluoroacetate (TFA) reduced MOD process has the advantage that it has a larger tolerance for …

A sharp drop in resistance and a magnetization anomaly have been observed in La2/3Ca1/3MnO3 film in zero magnetic field at the BaTiO3 substrate structural phase transition temperature, due to the substrate clamping/strain effect, which is confirmed by Raman scattering. However, the anomalies for both resistance and magnetization were eliminated by a strong external magnetic field. These phenomena indicate that strain can cause colossal resistance and a change in magnetization which resembles the magnetic field effect. The interplay of the external forces (strain and magnetic field) is a good demonstration of the strong coupling between spin and lattice in colossal magnetoresistance …
