Long-Term Performance Of A Permeable Reactive Barrier In Acid Sulphate Soil Terrain, Gyanendra Regmi, Buddhima Indraratna, Long Nghiem
Long D Nghiem
Deep drainage technique utilised for flood mitigation in low-land coastal areas of Australia during the late 1960s has resulted in the generation of sulphuric acid in soil by the oxidation of pyritic materials. Further degradation of the subsurface environment with widespread contamination of the underlying soil and groundwater presents a major and challenging environmental issue in acid sulphate soil (ASS) terrains. Although several ASS remediation techniques recently implemented in the floodplain of Southeast Australia including operation of gates, tidal buffering and lime injections could significantly control the pyrite oxidation, they could not improve the long-term water quality. More recently, permeable …

Performance Of A Prb For The Remediation Of Acidic Groundwater In Acid Sulfate Soil Terrain, Buddhima Indraratna, Gyanendra Regmi, Long Nghiem, A. Golab
Long D Nghiem
Contaminated groundwater resulting from pyrite oxidation of acid sulfate soils (ASSs) is a major environmental problem in coastal Australia. A column test was carried out for an extended period with recycled concrete to study the efficiency of the reactive materials for neutralizing acidic groundwater. Results show that the actual acid neutralization capacity of the recycled concrete could decrease to less than 50% of the theoretical value due to armoring effects. Nevertheless, the performance is good as a spot treatment in ASS Terrain using a near-zero cost waste product. Based on the test results and site characterization, a permeable reactive barrier …

Performance Of A Novel Osmotic Membrane Bioreactor (Ombr) System: Flux Stability And Removal Of Trace Organics, Abdulhakeem Alturki, James Mcdonald, Stuart J. Khan, Faisal I. Hai, William E. Price, Long Nghiem
Long D Nghiem
Results reported here highlight the potential and several challenges in the development of a novel osmotic membrane bioreactor (OMBR) process for the treatment of municipal wastewater. Following the initial gradual decline, a stable permeate flux value was obtained after approximately four days of continuous operation. There was evidence of continuous deterioration of biological activity of the OMBR system, possibly due to the build-up of salinity in the reactor. The removal of 25 out of 27 trace organic compounds with molecular weight higher than 266 g/mol was above 80% and was possibly governed by the interplay between physical separation of the …

The Effect Of Incomplete Mixing Upon The Performance Of A Membrane-Coupled Anaerobic Fermentor, Ahmed Hussein Msmali, Mark I. Nelson, John M. Kavanagh
Associate Professor Mark Nelson
We consider a model to describe the performance of a membrane-coupled anaerobic fermentor which was developed and calibrated using experimental data by Kim and Chung (2010). The model consists of six differential equations, modelling the concentration of five biochemical species and the rate of gasification. In the original work it was assumed that reactor is well-mixed. We use a two parameter mixing model to investigate the effect of incomplete mixing upon the performance of this process. The parameters in the mixing mode are the size of the stagnant region and a parameter controlling the degree of mixing between the regions. …

Performance Evaluation Of Ethanol Production Through Continuous Fermentation, Harvinder S. Sidhu, John M. Kavanagh, Simon D. Watt, Mark I. Nelson
Associate Professor Mark Nelson
We investigate the production of ethanol through continuous fermentation using Saccharomyces cerevisiae in a single reactor and cascades of two or three reactors. We use path following methods to investigate how the ethanol yield varies with the residence time in each reactor configuration of the cascade. Yields currently obtained in industry using yeast are approximately 0.48. We find reactor designs where the product yield approaches the stoichiometric limit of 0.51. We also estimate the financial benefits that can be achieved in typical US ethanol plants through increasing the product yield from 0.48 to 0.51.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This paper's objective is to document the research and developmental processes of creating East Tennessee State University's Spring Dance Concert 2012 costume designs and renderings. This thesis describes design creation from research stage to idea formulation to the conception of costumes using inspirational images, illustrations, and performance photos and videos. The show was a challenging undertaking because it involved the collaboration of many in a compressed timeframe: 1 artistic director, 9 choreographers, 20 dances, 46 performers, 10 lighting designers, 1 costume designer, and 3 weeks to put it all together. Incorporating digital technology into the rendering process saved time, expenses, …
The Effect Of The Female Athlete Triad On Performance: Both Physiologically And Psychologically, Constance Darlington
The Effect Of The Female Athlete Triad On Performance: Both Physiologically And Psychologically, Constance Darlington
Honors Theses
The female athlete triad is a condition that is composed of an interaction of three separate disorders: low energy intake due to the presence of an eating disorder or disordered eating, menstrual dysfunction, such as, oligomenorrhea or amenorrhea, and osteoporosis. Separately, each disorder can affect performance; however, when the disorders are combined, the consequences are magnified. The female triad has a profound effect on an athlete's performance both physiologically and psychologically. The female athlete triad can affect any female athlete; however, it is more prevalent among the athletes that specialize in aesthetic sports or sports that emphasize leanness, for example, …

Second Life is a virtual world accessible through the Internet in which users create objects and spaces, and interact socially through 3D avatars. Certain artists use the platform as a medium for art creation, using the aesthetic, spatial, temporal and technological features of SL as raw material. Code and scripts applied to animate and manipulate objects, avatars and spaces are important in this sense. These artists, their avatars and artwork in SL are at the centre of my research questions: what does virtual existence mean and what is its purpose when stemming from aesthetic exchange in SL?

A Novel Model To Measure Supplier Performance In The Supplier Selection Process, Alptekin Ulutas, Senevi Kiridena, Peter Gibson
Peter R Gibson
Supplier evaluation has become a significant topic over the past decades, as companies have started to become more outsourced oriented. However, previous research on this topic has not paid adequate attention to the limitations associated with availability of accurate and reliable data relating to the performance of potential suppliers. In an attempt to address this issue, this paper proposes a novel supplier evaluation model that can handle imprecise quantitative and qualitative data. Additionally, Decision Maker’s opinions regarding both qualitative and quantitative criteria are incorporated into this model so that a more comprehensive and realistic assessment of supplier performance can be …

Space-Time-Frequency Codes In Mb-Ofdm Uwb Communications: Advanced Order-8 Stfc And Its Performance, Le Chung Tran, A. Mertins, Eryk Dutkiewicz, Xiaojing Huang
Dr Le Chung Tran
The paper examines the potential of the implementation of high-order Space-Time-Frequency Codes (STFCs) in recently proposed STFC Multi-Band OFDM Ultra Wideband (MB-OFDM UWB) communications systems, and compares the performance of two different code structures of order-8 to that of the Alamouti code and of the conventional MB-OFDM UWB system (without STFCs). It is shown that an order-8 STFC provides significantly better error performance, compared to the Alamouti STFC, and much better error performance, compared to the conventional MB-OFDM, without increasing the total transmission power. It is also shown that, for the same total transmission power, the order-8, fully structured code …

Space-Time-Frequency Code Implementation In Mb-Ofdm Uwb Communications: Design Criteria And Performance, Alfred Mertins, Le Chung Tran
Dr Le Chung Tran
This paper proposes a general framework of Space-Time-Frequency Codes (STFCs) for Multi-Band Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (MB-OFDM) Ultra-Wide Band (UWB) communications systems. A great similarity between the STFC MB-OFDM UWB systems and conventional wireless Complex Orthogonal Space-Time Block Code (CO STBC) Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) systems is discovered. This allows us to quantify the pairwise error probability (PEP) of the proposed system and derive the general decoding method for the implemented STFCs. Based on the theoretical analysis results of PEP, we can further quantify the diversity order and coding gain of MB-OFDM UWB systems, and derive the design criteria for STFCs, …

Performance Characterization Of Complex Fuel Port Geometries For Hybrid Rocket Fuel Grains, Andrew Bath
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Extensive research in hybrid rocket motors has taken place at the department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at USU (Utah State University) in the last several years. USU has one of the few facilities in the country capable of static-test firing rocket motors on-campus, which allows for fast-paced testing and development not available elsewhere. Research has involved investigating propulsion devices for a range of applications, including micro-satellite thrusters, hot-gas generators, and even jet-assisted takeoff kick motors. Hybrid motors have the advantage of safety over any other chemical propulsion. Since the fuel and oxidizer are stored seperately, they are relatively inert …
The Power Of Stories: A Communicative Investigation Of Dancehall Narratives And Caribbean Culture, Marlon Emmanuel Douglas
The Power Of Stories: A Communicative Investigation Of Dancehall Narratives And Caribbean Culture, Marlon Emmanuel Douglas
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
This study investigates the power of stories told within Caribbean dancehall music and culture that present “good reasons” that are adopted by members of that culture. In addition, these “good reasons” were further investigated through participants’ communicative cultural performances at two dancehall related events. I adopted a qualitative interpretive approach to data collection and employed Walter Fisher’s narrative paradigm theory to engage in narrative analysis of collected Caribbean dancehall stories. My findings show that dancehall stories reveal powerful ideological frames that “naturalize” ways of being within Caribbean dancehall culture. Moreover, various relationships between “good reasons” presented in lyrical stories and …

Performance Of Athletic Cleated Shoes In The Sport Of Ultimate Frisbee., Andrew Johnson 1987-
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Athletic cleated shoe failures are commonplace to competitive-level ultimate frisbee players. Currently, there are no athletic cleated shoes designed for the sport of ultimate frisbee; players generally choose between football or soccer cleated shoes in the hopes of finding a match between footwear designs for a different sport and the needs of their own sport. A focus group and subsequent survey were conducted and administered, respectively, to better understand the types of failures that occur, as well as the causes of these failures. Approximately 78% of failures experienced in ultimate frisbee are caused by the player executing a cut, or …

Experience, Effectuation, And Something Good : Does The Use Of Effectuation Lead To Positive Outcomes?, Thomas E. Nelson
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The theory of effectuation is ascending in entrepreneurship education. Hundreds of articles have been written on the topic. Many textbooks mention the theory, and one college level textbook teaches entrepreneurship entirely from an effectual perspective. Given its acceptance, the natural assumption is that effectuation is somehow 'good.' That is, there is some unique benefit that an entrepreneur gains from using effectuation. This dissertation examines the concept of effectuation, and its value to entrepreneurship. It seeks to determine if entrepreneurs who use effectual logic outperform entrepreneurs who don't. Four hundred and fifty entrepreneurs across three states are surveyed to determine if …

Evaluating The Volatility Forecasting Performance Of Best Fitting Garch Models In Emerging Asian Stock Markets, Chaiwat Kosapattarapim, Yan-Xia Lin, Michael Mccrae
Associate Professor Yan-Xia Lin
While modeling the volatility of returns is essential for many areas of finance, it is well known that financial return series exhibit many non-normal characteristics that cannot be captured by the standard GARCH model with a normal error distribution. But which GARCH model and which error distribution to use is still open to question, especially where the model that best fits the in-sample data may not give the most effective out-of-sample volatility forecasting ability. Approach: In this study, six simulated studies in GARCH(p,q) with six different error distributions are carried out. In each case, we determine the best fitting GARCH …

Governments worldwide have, increasingly, implemented e-government initiatives for their potential significant benefits; among which, delivering better services to citizens through increasing citizens' convenience, satisfaction, and independence; and saving their time, effort, and cost. Achieving each benefit is an objective to these governments and fulfilling each objective is considered a critical success factors. Hence, governments need to assess the extent to which they were able to obtain their preset goals. This study merely focuses on the citizens' perspective of the evaluation. However, the literature seems to lack studies that propose such a sufficient evaluation tool that has been reliably validated. Therefore, …

Synthesis And Electrochemical Performance Of Liv 3o 8/Polyaniline As Cathode Material For The Lithium Battery, Xuan-Wen Gao, Jia-Zhao Wang, Shulei Chou, Hua-Kun Liu
Shulei Chou
LiV3O8-polyaniline nanocomposites have been synthesized via chemical oxidative polymerization directed by the anionic surfactant sodium dodecyl benzene sulfate. The polyaniline particles are uniformly coated on the LiV3O8 nanorods. The composite with 12 wt.% polyaniline retains a discharge capacity of 204 mAh g-1 after 100 cycles and had better rate capability (175 mAh g-1 at 2 C and 145 mAh g-1 at 4 C) than the bare LiV3O8 electrode in the potential range of 1.5e4.0 V. The polyaniline coating can buffer the dissolution into the LiPF6 electrode that occurs in LiV3O8 during cycling. The charge transfer resistance of the composite electrode …
