The simulation data generated via WRS were then processed and analysed within MATLAB. The simulation results showed that the control policy acquired from Q-learning is much more effective compared to the traditional …
Deadly Paradox Of Self-Defense, Rodger E. Broome Phd
Deadly Paradox Of Self-Defense, Rodger E. Broome Phd
Rodger E. Broome
Police deadly force is not intended to kill, but its purpose is to stop a violent person from hurting others. It is a desperate measure to bring someone physically under control, even at the risk of taking his or her life. In my research, the officers’ lived experience with shooting another person was paradoxical. Each shot fired by the officers was the most horrible thing they had ever done while being vital to surviving the encounters. Every bullet that hit its mark improved the likelihood that the officer would live while each bullet extinguished the life of the adversary. The …

Communicating the need to prepare well in advance of the wildfire season is a strategic priority for wildfire management agencies worldwide. However, there is considerable evidence to suggest that although these agencies invest significant effort towards this objective in the lead up to each wildfire season, landholders in at-risk locations often remain under-prepared. One reason for the poor translation of risk information materials into actual preparation may be attributed to the diversity of people now inhabiting wildfire-prone locations in peri-urban landscapes. These people hold widely varying experiences, beliefs, attitudes and values relating to wildfire, which influence their understanding and interpretation …

Optimization And Learning In Energy Efficient Cognitive Radio System, Kun Zheng
Optimization And Learning In Energy Efficient Cognitive Radio System, Kun Zheng
Doctoral Dissertations
Energy efficiency and spectrum efficiency are two biggest concerns for wireless communication. The constrained power supply is always a bottleneck to the modern mobility communication system. Meanwhile, spectrum resource is extremely limited but seriously underutilized.
Cognitive radio (CR) as a promising approach could alleviate the spectrum underutilization and increase the quality of service. In contrast to traditional wireless communication systems, a distinguishing feature of cognitive radio systems is that the cognitive radios, which are typically equipped with powerful computation machinery, are capable of sensing the spectrum environment and making intelligent decisions. Moreover, the cognitive radio systems differ from traditional wireless …

Generalizing Agent Plans And Behaviors With Automated Staged Observation In The Real-Time Strategy Game Starcraft, Zackary A. Gill
Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA
In this thesis we investigate the processes involved in learning to play a game. It was inspired by two observations about how human players learn to play. First, learning the domain is intertwined with goal pursuit. Second, games are designed to ramp up in complexity, walking players through a gradual cycle of acquiring, refining, and generalizing knowledge about the domain. This approach does not rely on traces of expert play. We created an integrated planning, learning and execution system that uses StarCraft as its domain. The planning module creates command/event groupings based on the data received. Observations of unit behavior …

Learning Pattern Classification Tasks With Imbalanced Data Sets, Giang Hoang Nguyen, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum, Son Lam Phung
Professor Salim Bouzerdoum
This chapter is concerned with the class imbalance problem, which has been recognized as a crucial problem in machine learning and data mining. The problem occurs when there are significantly fewer training instances of one class compared to another class. Most machine learning algorithms work well with balanced data sets since they aim to optimize the overall classification accuracy or a related measure. For imbalanced data sets, the decision boundary established by standard machine learning algorithms tends to be biased towards the majority class; therefore, the minority class instances are more likely to be misclassified. There are many problems that …

Improved Learning In Grid-To-Grid Neural Network Via Clustering, William E. White, Khan M. Iftekharuddin, Abdesselam Bouzerdoum
Professor Salim Bouzerdoum
The maze traversal problem involves finding the shortest distance to the goal from any position in a maze. Such maze solving problems have been an interesting challenge in computational intelligence. Previous work has shown that grid-to-grid neural networks such as the cellular simultaneous recurrent neural network (CSRN) can effectively solve simple maze traversing problems better than other iterative algorithms such as the feedforward multi layer perceptron (MLP). In this work, we investigate improved learning for the CSRN maze solving problem by exploiting relevant information about the maze. We cluster parts of the maze using relevant state information and show an …
