Factors Determining Media Coverage Of Meat And Poultry Recalls: Evidence From The Ap Newswire, Thais Fregonesi Carvalho
Factors Determining Media Coverage Of Meat And Poultry Recalls: Evidence From The Ap Newswire, Thais Fregonesi Carvalho
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Food safety is an important public health issue. Product recalls are an important part of the overall food safety system and occur when potentially unsafe products enter the marketplace. However, it is important that information about the recall ultimately reaches the public. This research assesses the publicity that recalls receive by the popular media. The focus is specifically on recalls of meat and poultry products. Publicity is measured by coverage in the AP Newswire. Data were gathered from the United States Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) and cover meat and poultry recalls from 1982 to 2009. …
Developing Gap Training For Growers: Perspectives From Pennsylvania Supermarkets, Daniel Tobin, Joan Thomson, Luke F. Laborde, Jessica Bagdonis
Developing Gap Training For Growers: Perspectives From Pennsylvania Supermarkets, Daniel Tobin, Joan Thomson, Luke F. Laborde, Jessica Bagdonis
The Journal of Extension
Major supermarket chains increasingly are requiring their produce suppliers to provide evidence of compliance with on-farm food safety standards, known as Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs). To develop a relevant GAP training curriculum that meets the needs of Pennsylvania growers, supermarkets that operate in the state were surveyed to determine their food safety policies and practices that will impact local produce growers. As supermarket food safety policies become more stringent, Extension can serve a valuable role in helping growers meet new food safety documentation challenges and in facilitating communication about the needs and interests of growers, supermarkets, and consumers.

Food-borne illness remains a major public health challenge in the United States, causing an estimated 48 million illness episodes and 3000 deaths annually. The FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA), enacted in 2011, gives the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) new tools to regulate food safety. The act emphasizes prevention, enhanced recall authority, and oversight of imported food.
The FSMA brings the FDA’s food safety regulation in line with core tenets of public health by focusing on preventing outbreaks, rather than reacting to them, and differentiating between foods and food producers based on the degree of risk they pose. The …
Intention To Comply With Food Safety Messages In A Crisis As A Function Of Message Source And Message Reliability, Karen June Freberg
Intention To Comply With Food Safety Messages In A Crisis As A Function Of Message Source And Message Reliability, Karen June Freberg
Doctoral Dissertations
A key role of public relations is to manage crises, unexpected yet unpredictable events that cause emotional and physical harm (Coombs, 2007). Among the challenges in handling a crisis effectively is dealing with the various media in which information is presented. Because the use of social media in a crisis is a relatively new phenomenon, further understanding of the challenges and opportunities of these media is warranted. Part of meeting this challenge requires precise modeling of consumer responses to safety messages. To remedy gaps in our understanding of social media and food safety crisis communications, consumer intent to comply with …
Serving Safe Barbeques For A Crowd, Joan Hegerfeld-Baker, Nancy Pauly
Serving Safe Barbeques For A Crowd, Joan Hegerfeld-Baker, Nancy Pauly
SDSU Extension Extra Archives
At many gatherings—such as athletic or church events, summer festivals, county fairs, and family reunions—large amounts of ground beef barbeque (BBQ) are prepared. For many volunteers, “cooking for a crowd” is not a common practice and their kitchens are not equipped to cook large amounts of food. If you are called upon to be in charge of the BBQ for a large group or concession, consider the following safe food-handling techniques.
Meat And Poultry Buying At Farmers Markets: A Survey Of Shoppers At Three Markets In Oregon, Lauren Gwin, Larry Lev
Meat And Poultry Buying At Farmers Markets: A Survey Of Shoppers At Three Markets In Oregon, Lauren Gwin, Larry Lev
The Journal of Extension
Farmers markets can be a valuable direct marketing channel. Meat and poultry, relatively new market products, have not achieved widespread success, many vendors reporting low sales and profits. To understand this lack of consumer enthusiasm and acceptance, we surveyed consumers at three Oregon farmers markets using a simple, effective research method (n>1100). Nearly half had never purchased meat or poultry at a farmers market. The main reasons meat and poultry consumers do not buy more or any of these products at farmers markets are price, inconvenience, and food safety. Consumer education recommendations are given to expand sales of these …
Using Linked Household-Level Datasets To Explain Consumer Response To Bse In Canada, Xin Wang
Using Linked Household-Level Datasets To Explain Consumer Response To Bse In Canada, Xin Wang
University of Kentucky Doctoral Dissertations
Household-level Canadian meat purchases from 2002-2008, a Food Opinions Survey conducted in 2008 at the national level and household-level egg purchases from 2002-2005 in Alberta and Ontario were used to explore consumer responses to Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) in Canada.
The opinions survey focused on nutritional priorities, general and specific food safety concerns, and trust in government and food industry decision makers. The egg data set contained specific product information allowing us to distinguish purchases of conventional eggs from those of value-added eggs with perceived health attributes. Thus, the egg purchase data appeared to be an interesting proxy of revealed …
Mathematical Modeling Of The Transmission And Control Of Foodborne Pathogens And Antimicrobial Resistance At Preharvest, Cristina Lanzas, Zhao Lu, Yrjo T. Grohn
Mathematical Modeling Of The Transmission And Control Of Foodborne Pathogens And Antimicrobial Resistance At Preharvest, Cristina Lanzas, Zhao Lu, Yrjo T. Grohn
Cristina Lanzas
Foodborne diseases are a significant health care and economical burden. Most foodborne pathogens are enteric pathogens harbored in the gastrointestinal tract of farm animals. Understanding the transmission of foodborne pathogens and dissemination of antimicrobial resistance at the farm level is necessary to design effective control strategies at preharvest. Mathematical models improve our understanding of pathogen dynamics by providing a theoretical framework in which factors affecting transmission and the control of the pathogens can be explicitly considered. In this review, we aim to present the principles underlying the mathematical modeling of foodborne pathogens and antimicrobial resistance at the farm level to …

This study evaluates the effects of a spearmint (/-carvone) and wintergreen oil (methyl salicylate) emulsion (CMSE) on age 1 landlocked Atlantic salmon Salmo salar sebago (hereafter salmon). Salmon were immersed in either 257 µl/L CMSE or 75 mg/L tricaine methanesulfonate (MS-222) to induce anesthesia (stage 4), useful for emersion and noninvasive husbandry procedures, and then salmon were recovered in fresh water. Induction was quicker in the CMSE group; however, recovery was quicker in the MS-222 group. A second experiment was conducted in which salmon were immersed in 257 µl/L CMSE for 8.5 min, or 75 mg/L MS-222 for 8.5 min …
Suggested Improvements For The Allergenicity Assessment Of Genetically Modified Plants Used In Foods, Richard E. Goodman
Suggested Improvements For The Allergenicity Assessment Of Genetically Modified Plants Used In Foods, Richard E. Goodman
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Genetically modified (GM) plants are increasingly used for food production and industrial applications. As the global population has surpassed 7 billion and per capita consumption rises, food production is challenged by loss of arable land, changing weather patterns, and evolving plant pests and disease. Previous gains in quantity and quality relied on natural or artificial breeding, random mutagenesis, increased pesticide and fertilizer use, and improved farming techniques, all without a formal safety evaluation. However, the direct introduction of novel genes raised questions regarding safety that are being addressed by an evaluation process that considers potential increases in the allergenicity, toxicity, …
