Art Of Life: Gauguin’S Language Of Color And Shape, Eva Maria Raepple Oct 2011

Art Of Life: Gauguin’S Language Of Color And Shape, Eva Maria Raepple

Philosophy Scholarship

Friedrich Nietzsche, the nineteenth century philosopher (1844 -1900), whose works speak of his unyielding search for an art of life, warns of the serpent’s promise, a promise that according to Genesis 3 foreshadows tribulations. On the stage of life the promise to know, to know as a subject that actively grasps the world, is an alluring, call, one that permits free spirits to explore and design life as a work of art beyond the confines of the herd. A changing role of the knowing and imagining subject in the nineteenth century enticed philosophers and inspired artists, unleashing their creativeness to …

Prototype Software For Colorant Formulation Using Gamblin Conservation Colors, Marissa Haddock Sep 2011

Prototype Software For Colorant Formulation Using Gamblin Conservation Colors, Marissa Haddock

Theses

When selecting pigments from a large set for restorative inpainting, it can often be challenging to create a mixture that will provide an exact match to the original artwork under a range of viewing and illumination conditions. In this research, a prototype computer program was developed that will aid the user by providing a color match and paint recipe that exhibits minimal metamerism when compared to the original artwork. The Gamblin Conservation Colors, a set of 43 colorants specially formulated for inpainting, were characterized in terms of their optical properties, absorption and scattering, according to Kubelka-Munk turbid media theory. Formulations …

In Vivo Measurement Of Color Relationships Between The Maxillary Central Incisor And Canine As A Function Of Age, Marie E. Falcone Aug 2011

In Vivo Measurement Of Color Relationships Between The Maxillary Central Incisor And Canine As A Function Of Age, Marie E. Falcone

Master's Theses

Abstract

Introduction

It has long been taught that the basic shade (hue) of the patient can be taken from the canine (i.e. that tooth thought to have the highest chroma of a particular hue) and then that hue can be applied to other anterior teeth but at a lower chroma. However, this concept does not appear to derive from published measurements or observations. This study documented the color relationship between in vivo maxillary central incisors and canines to examine: (1) whether they share the same hue, but have different chromas (as commonly taught); and, (2) whether color differences (∆E values) …

Improving Brain-Computer Interface Performance: Giving The P300 Speller Some Color., David B. Ryan Aug 2011

Improving Brain-Computer Interface Performance: Giving The P300 Speller Some Color., David B. Ryan

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Individuals who suffer from severe motor disabilities face the possibility of the loss of speech. A Brain-Computer Interface (BCI) can provide a means for communication through non-muscular control. Current BCI systems use characters that flash from gray to white (GW), making adjacent character difficult to distinguish from the target. The current study implements two types of color stimulus (grey to color [GC] and color intensification [CI]) and I hypotheses that color stimuli will; (1) reduce distraction of nontargets (2) enhance target response (3) reduce eye strain. Online results (n=21) show that GC has increased information transfer rate over CI. Mean …

Color Vision And Color Discrimination In Anolis Sagrei, Rachael A. Singleton Jun 2011

Color Vision And Color Discrimination In Anolis Sagrei, Rachael A. Singleton

Honors Theses

Anolis is a genus of fairly common lizards; over 300 species of Anolis inhabit areas close to the equator. One of their most unique features is the dewlap, a colorful throat fan that the lizards can extend and contract to denote certain behaviors. Dewlap color and pattern varies between species, and therefore aids in species identification. For this reason, color vision and color discrimination is especially important in Anolis lizards. Over a 10-week period a series of training experiments using color markers were done with four lizards of the Anolis sagrei species. The lizards were trained to move a color …

From Form To Form, Pia Bergholtz May 2011

From Form To Form, Pia Bergholtz

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

My MFA thesis project is an exploration of the evolving nature of patterns, and how set shapes and lines can take on new form through position, scale, repetition and color. I have designed four Scandinavian style patterns with imagery and colors drawn from my roots and childhood in Sweden. With the inspiration and direction of a variety of different cultural imagery and form, I then explored how to make new patterns from each of these, ending up with over 100 different patterns and variations from the original four. The exhibit represents the wide range of transformation that can be achieved, …

Change Does Not Wait, Kristina B. Hall May 2011

Change Does Not Wait, Kristina B. Hall

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The changes found in the growth patterns of trees, as they are impacted by their environment, can be seen as reflecting the journey that one progresses through over their own life. This thesis is the result of inner revelations that led the author to create a series of images that depict connections made between the movements found in trees that can be paralleled to the stresses in our own lives brought on by circumstance and experience. Correlations between human experience and nature are illuminated through the discussion of color usage, composition, historical art reference and development of personal artistic techniques.

Literature Review - Pigments In Plant Health, Gregory Keith Bartley Jr. Apr 2011

Literature Review - Pigments In Plant Health, Gregory Keith Bartley Jr.

Gregory Keith Bartley Jr.

The solar radiation received at the Earth’s surface helps power the photochemical processes in photosynthesis. However, under sunlight, photosynthetic organisms are unavoidably exposed to potentially harmful levels of ultraviolet and visible light radiation. Consequently, plants have developed many mechanisms for the avoidance and dissipation of excess light energy. The growth of crops under increased solar irradiance during sub- and supra-optimal temperature conditions is an obstacle for increasing seasonal crop production in the transition zone. New methods for reducing the photoinhibitory effects of solar irradiation have been observed in the field of turfgrass. Through the application of pigment compounds to the …

Comparison Of Various Configurations Of Cdc-Type Traps For The Collection Of Phlebotomus Papatasi Scopoli In Southern Israel, Daniel L. Kline, Jerome Hogsette, Gunter Muller

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

We conducted two experiments to determine the best CDC-trap configuration for catching male and female Phlebotomus papatasi. First, visual features were evaluated. Standard CDC traps were modified to have black or white catch bags, black or white lids, or no lids and these were tried in different combinations. Significantly more male sand flies were caught by darker traps; significantly more females were captured by traps with either all black or a combination of black and white features. Attraction may be due to dark color or contrast in colors. CDC traps with suction and the following features were also evaluated: …

Effect Of Roasting Conditions On Hardness, Moisture Content And Colour Of Pistachio Kernels, Ahmad Shakerardekani Feb 2011

Effect Of Roasting Conditions On Hardness, Moisture Content And Colour Of Pistachio Kernels, Ahmad Shakerardekani

Ahmad Shakerardekani

Roasting of whole-kernels is an important step in the production of pistachio paste. The effect of

hot air roasting temperatures (90-190°C) and times (5-65 min) on the hardness, moisture content and colour

attributes (‘L’, ‘a’ and ‘b’ values and yellowness index) of both whole-kernel and ground-state were investigated

using response surface methodology (RSM). Increases in roasting temperature and time caused a decrease in all

the responses except for ‘a’ value of ground-state. The interaction and quadratic models sufficiently described

the changes in the hardness and colour values, respectively. The result of RSM analysis showed that hardness

and colour attributes (‘L’ …

Response Of Tribolium Castaneum And Tribolium Confusum Adults To Vertical Black Shapes And Its Potential To Improve Trap Capture, Altair A. Semeao, James F. Campbell, R. Jeff Whitworth, Phillip E. Sloderbeck

United States Department of Agriculture-Agricultural Research Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Tribolium castaneum and Tribolium confusum can be monitored in food processing facilities using traps baited with pheromones and kairomones, but beetle response to traps might be enhanced by adding visual cues. Against a white background, T. castaneum adults were more likely to visit black pillars than white pillars when presented with a choice (e.g., 73% of beetles visited black and 17% visiting white pillar), and visits to black pillars increased with pillar height. When tested against a black background, beetles did not show a significant preference for either color pillar regardless of height. When comparing beetle’s captures in pheromone/kairomone baited …

Postharvest Physico-Chemical And Mechanical Changes In Jambu Air (Syzygium Aqueum Alston) Fruits, Amru Bin Nasrulhaq Boyce

Amru Bin Nasrulhaq Boyce

Little data is available in the scientific literature on postharvest changes taking place in Syzygium aqueum fruits, an increasingly popular fruit in the Asian region. In this study the postharvest physico-chemical and mechanical properties, namely, fruit color, weight loss, pulp firmness, total soluble solids, pH and titratable acidity were determined during the postharvest storage period under ambient conditions of Syzygium aqueum fruits. It was observed that weight loss, total soluble solids (TSS) and pH of the jambu air fruits increased with time whilst pulp firmness and the color index of the fruits decreased. Analysis of the antioxidant activity, determined in …

Two-Color Terahertz Response In Bilayer Graphene Nanoribbons With Spin-Orbit Coupling, Junfeng Liu, Bo Wang, Zhongshui Ma, Chao Zhang Jan 2011

Two-Color Terahertz Response In Bilayer Graphene Nanoribbons With Spin-Orbit Coupling, Junfeng Liu, Bo Wang, Zhongshui Ma, Chao Zhang

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

We demonstrate that spin-orbit coupling can give rise to a strong terahertz response in metallic armchair bilayer graphene nanoribbons. The combination of the interlayer coupling and the spin-orbit coupling leads to double resonant optical response in the low frequency regime. The frequency separation of the two excitations is tunable with a gate voltage.

How Other Drivers’ Vehicle Characteristics Influence Your Driving Speed, Russell Brockett Jan 2011

How Other Drivers’ Vehicle Characteristics Influence Your Driving Speed, Russell Brockett

CMC Senior Theses

An analysis of the effect of passing vehicles’ characteristics and their impact on other drivers’ velocities was investigated. Three experimental studies were proposed and likely outcomes were discussed. Experiment 1 focused on the effect of passing vehicle type (SUV, sedan or truck) on driver speed. Drivers were hypothesized as going faster when the same vehicle type as they were driving passed them versus when no vehicle or a different vehicle passed them. Experiment 2 focused on the effect of passing SUV age on driver’s speed. Evidence suggests passing older SUVs will increase the driver’s speed more than new SUVs. Experiment …

Evaluation Of The Optical And Mechanical Properties Of Cad-Cam Generated Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Laminate Veneers, Tariq F. Alghazzawi Jan 2011

Evaluation Of The Optical And Mechanical Properties Of Cad-Cam Generated Yttria-Stabilized Zirconia Laminate Veneers, Tariq F. Alghazzawi

All ETDs from UAB

The purpose of this investigation was to study three aspects which have been shown to limit clinical applications of yttria-stabilized zirconia (Y-TZP) for dental restorations. Mechanical property and structural changes due to low-temperature degradation (LTD) of Y-TZP led to increased surface roughness and monoclinic phase fractions, with a concomitant decrease in hardness and modulus. Yttria content and flexural strength were unchanged and phase transformation proceeded from the surface into the bulk of the material. The optical properties of Y-TZP, IPS e.max® CAD (IEC), and feldspathic por-celain (FP) laminate veneers showed that the underlying color of try-in pastes (TP) af-fected the …

Illustrative Neighborhood Redevelopment, Bradley Bethel Jan 2011

Illustrative Neighborhood Redevelopment, Bradley Bethel

Theses

Urban planning is implemented under many theories and purposes. But often times, due to difference in public preferences, plans can become inconsistent and lack harmony with other neighborhoods. Design theories may become muddled in other design theories. Sometimes, even basic design principles are undermined or ignored completely. The city of Buffalo, New York is distinguished by several major characteristics in area planning. However, those plans have been threatened by inconsistent planning from the past sixty years. Only in recent years have plans been sought for more concise methods to preserve the past and establish newer, progressive plans. The Illustrative Neighborhood …

Physics Faculty Research & Creative Works

We have used velocity-map imaging to measure the three-dimensional momenta of electrons rescattered from Xe and Ar following the liberation of the electrons from these atoms by 45 fs, 800 nm intense laser pulses. Strong structure in the rescattering region is observed in both angle and energy, and is interpreted in terms of quantitative rescattering (QRS) theory. Momentum images have also been taken with two-color (800 nm + 400 nm) pulses on Xe targets. A strong dependence of the spectra on the relative phase of the two colors is observed in the rescattering region. Interpretation of the phase dependence using …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The aim of this research was to evaluate the color, firmness, and total phenolic (TP) content in tomatoes according to cultivar and growing conditions. Cultivars with oval, elongated, round, and cherry-shaped fruits of determinate tomato were grown in Mediterranean (Dragonja Valley) and continental regions. Experiments in the continental region were conducted outdoors (Ljubljana-field) and under a low tunnel (Ljubljana-tunnel). Results indicated that the color and firmness were significantly influenced by the typology of the cultivars and by the maturity stage associated with the climatic conditions. Oval, elongated, and cherry fruits had darker and more intensely red fruit skins, with significantly …

Wiggle Veil (Or, Love Needs Objects), Adrienne Lynch Jan 2011

Wiggle Veil (Or, Love Needs Objects), Adrienne Lynch

LSU Master's Theses

The six sculptural works that comprise my thesis exhibition emerged from a prolonged series of investigations into the intricately interconnected phenomenon of embodied experience in the world as we know it. These works explore the connections between mysteries in our inner and outer worlds, taking as inescapable fact the notion that our bodily vessels, in all their complexity and subtlety, are the vehicles through which we encounter the world. As such, this work posits embodiment as both frame and anchor for all knowledge and experience. These sculptures, made from ceramic materials and mixed media such as sugar, salt, string, and …

Marine Buoy Detection Using Circular Hough Transform, Loc Tran, Justin Selfridge, Gene Hou, Jiang Li Jan 2011

Marine Buoy Detection Using Circular Hough Transform, Loc Tran, Justin Selfridge, Gene Hou, Jiang Li

Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

A low cost method for buoy detection in maritime settings is presented using inexpensive digital cameras. In this method, the circular Hough transform is applied to an edge image to circular objects in the image. The center of these circles will signify the locations of each buoy. The known color information of the buoys is also used to enhance the performance by removing false detections. The algorithm is compared to an approach that locates buoys purely on color information. In order to validate the method, we test the approach synthetically and also with real images captured from a small surface …

Course Over Ground, Kyle James Bauer Jan 2011

Course Over Ground, Kyle James Bauer

LSU Master's Theses

This exhibition, Course Over Ground, cohesively combines a metaphorical reference to maritime navigation with sculptural forms that convey balance, tension, and control. My mixed media sculptures are conceived with an adherence to the formalist perspective of objects. Each sculpture exists as an honest form. The work, and my intention in making it, is evidence of the process of breaking down selective images or objects into what I understand to be their purest representational forms, such as a squares, cylinders, pyramids, and rectangles. I allude to themes and the metaphor of a journey, which coupled alongside my continual quest for self-discovery, …
