Analytical Solutions For A Single Vertical Drain With Time-Dependent Vacuum Combined Surcharge Preloading In Membrane And Membraneless Systems, Xueyu Geng, Buddhima Indraratna, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn

Buddhima Indraratna

Vertical drains combined with vacuum pressure and surcharge preloading are widely used to accelerate the consolidation process of soft clay in order to decrease the pore pressure as well as to increase the effective stress. Currently there are two types of vacuum preloading systems commercially available; (a) membrane system with an airtight membrane over the drainage layer and, (b) membraneless system where a vacuum system is connected to individual drain. Their effectiveness varies from site to site depending on the type of soil treated and the characteristics of the drain-vacuum system. This study presents the analytical solutions of vertical drains …

An Analytical Method For Predicting Cogging Forces In Linear Induction Motors, Mochammad Rusli, Jeffrey W. Moscrop, Donald Platt, Christopher David Cook Jan 2011

An Analytical Method For Predicting Cogging Forces In Linear Induction Motors, Mochammad Rusli, Jeffrey W. Moscrop, Donald Platt, Christopher David Cook

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

Cogging in a linear machine can be described as a variation in the magnetic forces as the machine travels along its linear uis. This effect can have a severe impact on the overall precision and even stability of the linear uis. In this paper an analytical method to predict the cogging forces in Linear Induction Moton (LIMs) is presented. An aecurate estimation of cogging is useful during the LIM design stage to help millimize this performance limiting factor. One common method used to predict cogging torques in rotary induction moton is the tooth overlap method. Due to the complexity of …

Improvement Of Rock Bolt Profiles Using Analytical And Numerical Methods, Chen Cao, Jan Anton Nemcik, Najdat I. Aziz Jan 2011

Improvement Of Rock Bolt Profiles Using Analytical And Numerical Methods, Chen Cao, Jan Anton Nemcik, Najdat I. Aziz

Faculty of Engineering - Papers (Archive)

The anchorage capacity of fully grouted bolts has been studied for many years, however the bolt rib profile and its effect on bolt shear resistance is poorly understood. A new development in calculating load transfer capacity between two rib profiles of varying geometries is discussed. The derived mathematical equations presented calculate the stress distribution adjacent to the fully grouted bolt and bolt pull out force needed to fail the resin. The Fast Lagrangian Analysis Continua (FLAC) program was used to verify the calculations of stress within the resin. The novel idea of coupling the bolt geometry with the calculated stress …

Consolidation By Vertical Drain Beneath A Circular Embankment Using Analytical And Numerical Modelling, Cholachat Rujikiatkamjorn, Buddhima Indraratna, A Aljorany

When prefabricated vertical drains (PVDs) are installed beneath circular embankment (i.e. circular oil tanks or silos), the system of vertical drains can be replaced by axisymmetric concentric rings with equivalent drain walls. A value for the equivalent coeffi cient of soil permeability must be obtained to provide the same degree of consolidation. A rigorous solution for PVDs installed under circular embankment is proposed and verifi ed by comparing its results with conventional unit cell model. The model is then validated via the consolidation process by vertical drains at the Skå-Edeby circular test embankment (Area II). The calculated values of settlement, …

An Analytical Simulation Technique For Cone-Beam Ct And Pinhole Spect, Xuezhu Zhang, Yujin Qi Jan 2011

An Analytical Simulation Technique For Cone-Beam Ct And Pinhole Spect, Xuezhu Zhang, Yujin Qi

Faculty of Engineering and Information Sciences - Papers: Part A

This study was aimed at developing an eficient simulation technique with an ordinary PC.The work involved derivation of mathematical operators, analytic phantom generations, and effective analytical projectors developing for cone—beam CT and pinhole SPECT imaging. The computer simulations based on the analytical projectors were developed by ray—tracing method for cone—beam CT and voxel—driven method for pinhole SPECT of degrading blurring. The 3D Shepp Logan,Jaszczak and Defrise phantoms were used for simulation evaluations and image reconstructions. The reconstructed phantom images were of good accuracy with the phantoms. The results showed that the analytical simulation technique is an efi cient tool for studying cone—beam CT and pinhole SPECT …

Building And Deployment Of An Automated, In Situ Greenhouse Gas Gas Chromatographic System, Andrew H. Hart Jan 2011

Building And Deployment Of An Automated, In Situ Greenhouse Gas Gas Chromatographic System, Andrew H. Hart

Master's Theses and Capstones

High-precision, continuous monitoring of greenhouse gases, such as carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), nitrous oxide (N 2O), sulfur hexafluoride (SF6), and the criteria pollutant carbon monoxide (CO), is important for characterizing their regional sources and sinks and understanding how their ambient levels are changing with time and associated anthropogenic activities. For monitoring this suite of gases, a fully automated gas chromatographic based analytical system was built and deployed in the field at the UNH AIRMAP Observing Station at Thompson Farm in Durham, NH. The instrument consists of a Shimadzu 17A gas chromatograph (GC), equipped with a Flame Ionization Detector and …
