Preserving Euskera In A Globalized World: Determining The Long-Term Efficacy Of Multilingual Schools In The Basque Country, Spain, Olivia Destrades Mendoza
Preserving Euskera In A Globalized World: Determining The Long-Term Efficacy Of Multilingual Schools In The Basque Country, Spain, Olivia Destrades Mendoza
Masters Theses
The Basque Country, Spain is a linguistically unique region where the minority indigenous language, Euskera, competes alongside the dominant state language, Castilian, and a lingua franca, English, for prestige and status. Following a history of cultural and linguistic repression and marginalization, the Basque community has, in the past 30 years, begun to reintroduce Euskera into new, multilingual school systems in order to teach, preserve and maintain their heritage language, while simultaneously acquiring English as an important language for global communication. This multimethod, qualitative study takes data from 36 survey respondents and five interview participants from the Basque Country, and triangulates …

Chronic Hindlimb Ischemia Impairs Functional Vasodilation And Vascular Reactivity In Mouse Feed Arteries, Trevor R. Cardinal, Kyle R. Struthers, Thomas J. Kesler, Matthew D. Yocum, David T. Kurjiaka, James B. Hoying
Peer Reviewed Articles
Vasodilation of lower leg arterioles is impaired in animal models of chronic peripheral ischemia. In addition to arterioles, feed arteries are a critical component of the vascular resistance network, accounting for as much as 50% of the pressure drop across the arterial circulation. Despite the critical importance of feed arteries in blood flow control, the impact of ischemia on feed artery vascular reactivity is unknown. At 14 days following unilateral resection of the femoral–saphenous artery–vein pair, functional vasodilation of the profunda femoris artery was severely impaired, 11 ± 9 versus 152 ± 22%. Although endothelial and smooth muscle-dependent vasodilation were …

Dimensionalizing Cultures: The Hofstede Model In Context, Geert Hofstede
Dimensionalizing Cultures: The Hofstede Model In Context, Geert Hofstede
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
This article describes briefly the Hofstede model of six dimensions of national cultures: Power Distance, Uncertainty Avoidance, Individualism/Collectivism, Masculinity/Femininity, Long/Short Term Orientation, and Indulgence/Restraint. It shows the conceptual and research efforts that preceded it and led up to it, and once it had become a paradigm for comparing cultures, research efforts that followed and built on it. The article stresses that dimensions depend on the level of aggregation; it describes the six entirely different dimensions found in the Hofstede et al. (2010) research into organizational cultures. It warns against confusion with value differences at the individual level. It concludes …
Beyond Lean: Simulation In Practice, Charles R. Standridge Ph.D.
Beyond Lean: Simulation In Practice, Charles R. Standridge Ph.D.
Open Textbooks
Lean thinking, as well as associated processes and tools, have involved into a ubiquitous perspective for improving systems particularly in the manufacturing arena. With application experience has come an understanding of the boundaries of lean capabilities and the benefits of getting beyond these boundaries to further improve performance. Discrete event simulation is recognized as one beyond-the-boundaries of lean technique. Thus, the fundamental goal of this text is to show how discrete event simulation can be used in addition to lean thinking to achieve greater benefits in system improvement than with lean alone. Realizing this goal requires learning the problems that …
Teaching In Educational Leadership Using Web 2.0 Applications: Perspectives On What Works, E. J. Shinsky, Hans A. Stevens
Teaching In Educational Leadership Using Web 2.0 Applications: Perspectives On What Works, E. J. Shinsky, Hans A. Stevens
Peer Reviewed Articles
To prepare 21st Century school leaders, educational leadership professors need to learn and teach the utilization of increasingly sophisticated technologies in their courses. The co-authors, a professor and an educational specialist degree candidate, describe how the use of advanced technologies — such as Wikis, Google Docs, Wimba Classroom, and Discussion Board — have served as a catalyst for learning among educational leadership students. Details regarding how technology has been used in one course are described, demonstrating how various apps and software applications can easily be applied in other courses.

Sprouty2 Deficiency In Mice Leads To The Development Of Achalasia, Benjamin Lee Staal
Sprouty2 Deficiency In Mice Leads To The Development Of Achalasia, Benjamin Lee Staal
Masters Theses
Sprouty 2 (Spry2), one of the four mammalian Spry family members, is a negative feedback regulator of many receptor tyrosine kinases (RTKs) signaling including Met. It fine-tunes RTKs signaling through multiple levels of regulations starting from RTK itself to several downstream molecules that are crucial for signal transduction. To understand what role Spry2 might play during developmental processes, we created a Spry2 conventional knockout mouse in which Spry2 expression is replaced by enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) reporter. Spry2 appears to be expressed in mouse embryo and in many adult tissues, and Spry2- deficient mice have smaller body size and …
Assessment Of Acculturation: Issues And Overview Of Measures, Ozgur Celenk, Fons J.R. Van De Vijver
Assessment Of Acculturation: Issues And Overview Of Measures, Ozgur Celenk, Fons J.R. Van De Vijver
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
Publicly available acculturation measures are systematically reviewed based on three criteria: scale descriptors (name of the scale, authors, year, target group, age group, subscales, and number of items), psychometric properties (reliabilities) and conceptual and theoretical structure (acculturation conditions, acculturation orientations, acculturation outcomes, acculturation attitudes, acculturation behaviors, conceptual model and life domains). Majority of the reviewed acculturation measures are short, single-scale instruments that are directed to specific target groups. Additionally, they mainly assess behavioral acculturation outcomes than acculturation conditions and orientations. Regarding the psychometric properties; most measures have an adequate internal consistency; yet cross-cultural validity of the instruments have not been …
Cultural Psychology Of African Americans, James M. Jones, Santiba Campbell
Cultural Psychology Of African Americans, James M. Jones, Santiba Campbell
Online Readings in Psychology and Culture
The cultural psychology of African Americans involves the evolution of African patterns of thought, feeling and behavior and their utilization as adaptive mechanisms in a context of racism and oppression. Assumptions about cultural psychology as the intersection of psyche and culture, and African American psychology as the multidimensional response to dehumanization and psychic conflict are discussed. Time, Rhythm, Improvisation, Orality, and Spirituality (TRIOS) are proposed as psycho-cultural mechanisms of adaptation, innovation, and psychological control for African Americans. Sources of variability among African Americans (both psychological and societal) are a basis for black subcultures within Black Culture. TRIOS is offered as …
