Gender And Color Specific Differences In Event Related Potentials, Abhishek Trikha Dec 2010

Gender And Color Specific Differences In Event Related Potentials, Abhishek Trikha

Theses and Dissertations

This project analyzed gender and color-specific differences in event-related potentials (ERPs). Previous studies have shown that males process color differently than females. In a recent study, sex differences were found in ERPs during a visual object recognition task. There were higher EEG amplitudes in females (especially P300) than males. Significant sex and color-specific differences have been found in diseases involving altered dopamine (DA) machinery. Thus, we analyzed differences between ERPs in males vs females during a color task. We also compared the color-specific differences in ERPs between males and females. Males and females participated in EEG recording sessions for 2 …

Industry has widely used freezing as a strategy to halt pathogen growth and more recently, crust freezing has been suggested as a means to improve mechanical operations, quality, and safety of poultry products. Two separate studies were conducted to evaluate the effect of crust freezing (20 min, -85 ¡C) on the survival of Escherichia coli and Salmonella Typhimurium and on quality and shelf life of raw chicken breasts, with or without skin. For the first study, ampicillin-resistant E. coli JM 109 and nalidixic acid-resistant S. Typhimurium were used in the experiments. A set of cultures was subjected to cold-shock stress …

Investigation Into The Use Of Color As A Device To Convey Memes During The Little Ice Age, Peter Allen White Dec 2010

Investigation Into The Use Of Color As A Device To Convey Memes During The Little Ice Age, Peter Allen White

Master's Theses

Color is used as a tool in visual communication to express ideas in a symbolic fashion. It can also be used as a guide to assist the viewer in the visual narrative. Artwork created in the period of time between 1300 to 1850 in northern and central Europe provides a comprehensive perspective in the use of color as symbol and color as an elucidative devise. This period of time is known as the Little Ice Age, the duration of which spans European history between the Medieval period and the Romantic era. The extreme climatic conditions of this era caused profound …

Extending The Rit-Dupont Suprathreshold Data Set: Weighted Individual Discrimination Pair Data And New Chroma Dependency Visual Data, Bingxin Hou Nov 2010

Extending The Rit-Dupont Suprathreshold Data Set: Weighted Individual Discrimination Pair Data And New Chroma Dependency Visual Data, Bingxin Hou

Theses

Since the 1980's, the RIT-DuPont dataset has been used extensively for color-difference formula development and testing. In the past, the dataset was published as 156 color median tolerances along specific vector directions about 19 color centers. The median tolerance, referred to as T50, is the estimated absolute magnitude of the color difference at which 50% of the population will accept or reject a pair relative to an anchor pair. 1D Probit analysis, a univariate statistical technique that locates a median threshold from a binary response data, was used to transform judgments of 958 color-difference pairs by 50 observers to 156 …

On Using The Color-Magnitude Diagram Morphology Of M67 To Test Solar Abundances, Z. Magic, A. Serenelli, A. Weiss, B. Chaboyer Aug 2010

On Using The Color-Magnitude Diagram Morphology Of M67 To Test Solar Abundances, Z. Magic, A. Serenelli, A. Weiss, B. Chaboyer

Dartmouth Scholarship

The open cluster M67 has solar metallicity and an age of about 4 Gyr. The turnoff (TO) mass is close to the minimum mass for which solar metallicity stars develop a convective core during main sequence evolution as a result of the development of hydrogen burning through the CNO cycle. The morphology of the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of M67 around the TO shows a clear hook-like feature, a direct sign that stars close to the TO have convective cores. VandenBerg et al. investigated the possibility of using the morphology of the M67 TO to put constraints on the solar metallicity, …

The Effect Of Natural Antimicrobial Ingredients On The Quality Of Roast Beef And Oven Roasted Turkey, Ace F. Vandewalle Aug 2010

The Effect Of Natural Antimicrobial Ingredients On The Quality Of Roast Beef And Oven Roasted Turkey, Ace F. Vandewalle

Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This research evaluates the use of a buffered vinegar and lemon juice concentrate (LV) solution on the quality of restructured beef and turkey rolls. Two studies were conducted to evaluate processing and ingredient concentration. Beef and turkey rolls were formulated with minimal ingredients. 1.5% sea salt, 0.5% turbinado sugar, with LV or no LV. Study one evaluated length of mixing time (2.5, 5, 10, 15, 20 minutes) on quality and sensory attributes with 2.5% LV or 0% LV (C). Study two was divided into four treatments, 0% (C), 1.5%, 2.5%, and 3.5% LV, used to evaluate the effects of three …

Why Is It Difficult To Search For Two Colors At Once? How Eye Movements Can Reveal The Nature Of Representations During Multi-Target Visual Search, Michael John Stroud May 2010

Why Is It Difficult To Search For Two Colors At Once? How Eye Movements Can Reveal The Nature Of Representations During Multi-Target Visual Search, Michael John Stroud

Open Access Dissertations

Visual search consists of locating a known target amongst a field of distractors. Often times, observers must search for more than one object at once. Eye movements were monitored in a series of visual search experiments examining search efficiency and how color is represented in order to guide search for multiple targets. The results demonstrated that observers were very color selective when searching for a single color. However, when searching for two colors at once, the degree of similarity between the two target colors had varying effects on fixation patterns. Search for two very similar colors was almost as efficient …

Acid Marination For Tenderness Enhancement Of Beef Bottom Round, Jeremey B. Hinkle May 2010

Lactic acid, acetic acid and sodium citrate dihydrate (food grade citric acid) at low and high concentrations gave 6 treatments per experiment. Objective color measurements were taken at …

Objects Of Attraction, Jessica Stewart May 2010

Objects Of Attraction, Jessica Stewart

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The work in Objects of Attraction is a culmination of the skills and experiences that I have acquired while at Georgia Southern University. The pieces are abstractions of natural flowers and seedpods that stem from my experiences in South Georgia woods. These brightly colored ceramic works are a reflection of the joy and wonder that I receive from the natural world. Colors, textures and forms found in nature are the driving force behind my work; I feel that so many of these natural attributes are often ignored. By creating work based on nature I strive to inspire viewers to take …

The Determination Of Reddening From Intrinsic Vr Colors Of Rr Lyrae Stars, Andrea Kunder, Brian Chaboyer, Andrew Layden Jan 2010

The Determination Of Reddening From Intrinsic Vr Colors Of Rr Lyrae Stars, Andrea Kunder, Brian Chaboyer, Andrew Layden

Dartmouth Scholarship

New R-band observations of 21 local field RR Lyrae variable stars are used to explore the reliability of minimum light (VR) colors as a tool for measuring interstellar reddening. For each star, R-band intensity mean magnitudes and light amplitudes are presented. Corresponding V-band light curves from the literature are supplemented with the new photometry, and (VR) colors at minimum light are determined for a subset of these stars as well as for other stars in the literature. Two different definitions of minimum light color are examined, one which uses …

Designing For Multicultural And International Audiences: Creating Culturally-Intelligent Visual Rhetoric And Overcoming Ethnocen, Bridget Moore Jan 2010

Designing For Multicultural And International Audiences: Creating Culturally-Intelligent Visual Rhetoric And Overcoming Ethnocen, Bridget Moore

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Various cultures interpret visual rhetoric differently; therefore, technical communicators must adjust their rhetoric accordingly by creating effective visual rhetoric for their international and multicultural audiences. Although there is a great deal of research in the field regarding how to create effective visual rhetorical rhetoric, this research often fails to take into international and multicultural audiences into consideration. Many visual rhetoric solutions proposed in technical communication involve 'catch all' approaches that do little to communicate to people of non-Western cultures and can even serve to offend or confuse international and multicultural audiences. These solutions are generated by a globalization mindset, but …

Altered Interactions, Kristen Rego Jan 2010

Altered Interactions, Kristen Rego

Theses and Dissertations

Surrounding materials, signage, and detritus on the daily path offer plenty to look at, if not too much. The eye seeks comfort in its passive vision by ignoring its peripheries. Identification of my personal vision reveals itself through the manipulation of ignored material. I consider hand-made vs. machine made, singular vs. the multiple particularly in plastics, packaging and other utilitarian objects. Industrial processes influence my one-person operation. Understanding the way objects are made allows for an opportunity to connect with them. I’m already surrounded by them, the least I can do is get to know them better.

Diverticular And Aneurysmal Structures Of The Left Ventricle In Adults: Report Of A Case Within The Context Of A Literature Review., Premraj Makkuni, Morris N Kotler, Vincent M. Figueredo

Department of Medical Genetics Faculty Papers

Left ventricular outpouchings are increasingly detected on cardiovascular imaging. Herein, we describe the case of a 45-year-old man who underwent noncardiac preoperative imaging and was found to have an asymptomatic left ventricular outpouching. The patient underwent successful surgical repair of the structure. When left ventricular outpouchings are detected, the main differential diagnoses are pseudoaneurysm, aneurysm, and diverticulum. The outcomes for these conditions differ substantially, and accurate diagnosis can be crucial in making clinical decisions. We review the relevant medical literature, outline the natural history of these left ventricular abnormalities, and discuss options in regard to their management.

Back To Color Blindness: Recent Developments In Race Discrimination Law In The United States, Marcia L. Mccormick Jan 2010

Back To Color Blindness: Recent Developments In Race Discrimination Law In The United States, Marcia L. Mccormick

All Faculty Scholarship

The United States has a long and somewhat conflicted history of espousing egalitarian values and yet tolerating a certain level of subordination of particular groups to a greater or lesser extent at the same time. Like many countries, it struggles with reconciling the goals of equality, pluralism, and liberty, and the balance has been struck differently at different times. In the current wave of such efforts, the Supreme Court is marking an increasingly formalist approach to the question of discrimination, while Congress appears to be pushing a slightly more substantive approach to discrimination. This short paper analyzes the Court’s recent …
