Designing For Future Building Adaptive Reuse Using Adaptstar, Sheila Conejos, Craig Langston Dec 2010

Designing For Future Building Adaptive Reuse Using Adaptstar, Sheila Conejos, Craig Langston

Sheila Conejos

Designing future buildings with embedded adaptive reuse potential is a useful criterion for sustainability. Adaptive reuse is an emerging and significant design strategy that supports global climate protection and emissions reduction. Building adaptive reuse is a viable alternative to demolition and replacement; it entails less energy and waste, and can offer social benefits by revitalizing familiar landmarks and giving them a new lease of life. This paper describes the development of a new rating tool known as adaptSTAR, suitable for assessing future adaptive reuse potential at the time a building is designed. This paper reports on the methodology used to …

Is Leed A True Leader? Studying The Effectiveness Of Leed Certification In Encouraging Green Building, Megan M. Turner Dec 2010

Is Leed A True Leader? Studying The Effectiveness Of Leed Certification In Encouraging Green Building, Megan M. Turner

Pomona Senior Theses

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (or LEED) is the most commonly used green building rating system in the United States, bestowing upon LEED certified buildings the prestige of being considered more sustainable than their non-certified neighbors. The public often assumes that LEED certified buildings are completely sustainable or even net-zero with regards to greenhouse gas emissions, but in actuality buildings certified under the most popular version of LEED are only required to be 15% more energy efficient than required by most state building codes – a far cry from the energy usage cuts needed to stave off global warming. …

Debugging Techniques For Locating Defects In Software Architectures, Kyungsoo Im Dec 2010

Debugging Techniques For Locating Defects In Software Architectures, Kyungsoo Im

All Dissertations

The explicit design of the architecture for a software product is a well established part of development projects. As the software architecture descriptions are becoming larger and more complex, there is more likelihood of defects being present in the software architecture. Studies have shown that a defect in the software architecture that has propagated to the development phase is very expensive to fix. To prevent such propagation of defects, this research proposes to provide debugging support for software architecture design.
Debugging is commonly used in programming languages to effectively find the cause of a failure and locate the error to …

Looking For Pumpkin Pie’S Analogs In The Indian Ocean Trading System: Applying The Creolization Model To The Swahili Coast, Allison J. Mickel Oct 2010

Looking For Pumpkin Pie’S Analogs In The Indian Ocean Trading System: Applying The Creolization Model To The Swahili Coast, Allison J. Mickel

Colonial Academic Alliance Undergraduate Research Journal

In discussing the origins of civilization on the Swahili Coast, scholars have historically attributed achievements in this area to the colonizing interests of Arab settlers. More recently, research has revealed much more ancient origins for the Swahili cities. Similarly, historical archaeologists studying the colonial Chesapeake once ignored contributions by forced African emigrants and Native Americans to the developing culture in the area. This view has largely been rejected in favor of “creolization” theory, whereby interacting cultures contribute practices and ideas which reformulate to produce an integrated mix entirely different from either antecedent. In my research, I apply creolization theory to …

Excavating Wilderness: A Reorienting Passage Into Central Park, Jeff Kamuda Oct 2010

Excavating Wilderness: A Reorienting Passage Into Central Park, Jeff Kamuda

Architecture Thesis Prep

If we are to understand that dwelling, a function of orientation is an ultimate goal of humankind, and that architecture's primary purpose is to provide this 'existential foothold', how can this be accomplished in an age when the very tools of orientation and it's components (time, place, and identity) be oriented to their surroundings through an increasing detachment from the natural world, how can architecture thus be used as a didactic mechanism ideology, developed through the historical lineage of the wilderness concept, will produce an opportunity for an architectural intervention to confront the primal act of orientation while simulating grafting …

Landscapes of Violence

This paper examines some of the ways in which the memory and practice of violence becomes embedded in landscapes such that the landscape itself becomes a vehicle for meaning through time - landscapes materialize meaning and thereby give particular stability and significance to the kinds of cultural significance that landscapes evoke

The Architectural Works Copyright Protection Act At Twenty: Has Full Protection Made A Difference?, David Shipley Oct 2010

The Architectural Works Copyright Protection Act At Twenty: Has Full Protection Made A Difference?, David Shipley

Scholarly Works

Even though our copyright statutes were silent about architecture until 1990, it was well established that plans, blueprints and models were copyrightable writings under the 1909 Act's category of "drawings or plastic works of a scientific or technical character," and then as "pictorial, graphic, and sculptural works" under the 1976 Act. The scope of an architect's copyright protection was, however, quite limited. The unauthorized copying of plans or blueprints constituted infringement, but most authorities concluded that plans were not infringed by using them, without the architect's permission, to construct the building they depicted. Moreover, the prevailing view was that an …

Owen Jones And The Conventionalization Of Ornament, John Kresten Jespersen Ph.D. Aug 2010

Owen Jones And The Conventionalization Of Ornament, John Kresten Jespersen Ph.D.

Kresten Jespersen

Owen Jones, an architect and theorist of ornament, is best remembered as an ornamenter of distinction. His theory and practice of conventional ornament, his powerful color, and his original forms which had their origins in the ornament of the Alhambra substantiate the claim that he was the greatest ornamenter of his age. The book analyzes the theory of conventionalization as it applies to ornament, color, architecture and interior design. In particular, the book explores repose as the psychological and spiritual outcome of his ornament.

Hot Swap, Brian J. Mccracken

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

Project Abstract : The current home personal computer allows for the exchange of parts so the user can easily upgrade or repair components as the users needs change. Hot Swapping, is the process of exchanging, upgrade/downgrade components with in a computer while the system is fully operational. The idea of maintaining a complex computer system, while it is fully operational and certain components can be exchanged as needed, has direct applications to the construction of a modern home. Current stick-frame housing techniques for home construction do not easily allow for major changes, or updates to the system, without portions of …

An Architecture Of Amelioration, Geoffrey Russell Plagemann Aug 2010

An Architecture Of Amelioration, Geoffrey Russell Plagemann

Masters Theses

Scar: A lingering sign of damage or injury, either mental or physical.

Technological advancement scars the landscape. It has been our practice to ignore, or worse, hide these marks that have been made as society continues to advance. Industries past left us relics and ruins of bygone eras of promise and production. The time we live in has recognized the untenable failures of past generations, however there are methods of industry that continue to injure the landscape. We will leave our scars.

In this time we must rethink the scar, define it, and recognize its beauty. The first step of …

Asynchronous Mips Processors: Educational Simulations, Robert L. Webb Aug 2010

Asynchronous Mips Processors: Educational Simulations, Robert L. Webb

Master's Theses

The system clock has been omnipresent in most mainstream chip designs. While simplifying many design problems the clock has caused the problems of clock skew, high power consumption, electromagnetic interference, and worst-case performance. In recent years, as the timing constraints of synchronous designs have been squeezed ever tighter, the efficiencies of asynchronous designs have become more attractive. By removing the clock, these issues can be mitigated. How- ever, asynchronous designs are generally more complex and difficult to debug. In this paper I discuss the advantages of asynchronous processors and the specifics of some asynchronous designs, outline the roadblocks to asynchronous …

Transformation Of Industrial Space, Xin Jia Aug 2010

Transformation Of Industrial Space, Xin Jia

Masters Theses

By the 1970s the international markets had begun to change and the region’s industries were becoming less competitive. Mines began to close. Factories that had operated night and day fell silent. Their gates closed and they became “brownfield” sites in need of restoration.

For the over past 20 years, city planners regenerated these derelict industrial lands in different ways especially focus on renaturalizing them. Less attention is being paid to them as active and strategic roles in contemporary affairs. Today, people’s thinking about this issue demands more the character of sentimental stimulus- for either the re-creation or preservation of past …

Roman Building Materials, Construction Methods, And Architecture: The Identity Of An Empire, Michael Strickland Aug 2010

Roman Building Materials, Construction Methods, And Architecture: The Identity Of An Empire, Michael Strickland

All Theses

ABSTRACT
Empires have been identified in various ways such as by the land area under their control, by their duration, their level of economic influence, or military might. The Roman Empire was not the world's largest and its duration, although notable, was not extraordinary. Military power was necessary for conquering the area brought under the control of the Empire. However, for the Romans, the ability and capacity for construction is what identified and expressed the Empire when it began and identifies the Empire today. The materials used, construction techniques employed, and architectural styles for structures for government, entertainment, dwellings, bridges, …

Construction Of Complex A At La Venta, Tabasco, Mexico: A History Of Buildings, Burials, Offerings, And Stone Monuments, Arlene Colman Jul 2010

Construction Of Complex A At La Venta, Tabasco, Mexico: A History Of Buildings, Burials, Offerings, And Stone Monuments, Arlene Colman

Theses and Dissertations

In 1969, Paul Tolstoy commented that archaeological investigation at La Venta had become "a fairly long and at times tortuous story of excavation, interpretation, re-interpretation, and depredation at the famous site found by Stirling." This thesis adds to the torture by describing and illustrating the architecture, burials, offerings, and stone sculpture of La Venta Complex A in an effort to reconcile data into an accurate sequence of meaningful cultural events. The details derive from excavation reports, field notes, maps, photographs, and correspondence of the early investigators of the site. This study addressed three myopic perceptions regarding La Venta: (1) the …

Awareness Of Daylighting On Student Learning In An Educational Facility, Alana S. Pulay

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

This study examines how awareness of the interior architecture of a building, specifically daylighing, affects students academic performance. Extensive research has proven that the use of daylighting in a classroom can significantly enhance students’ academic success. The problem statement and purpose of this study is to determine if student awareness of daylighting in their learning environment affects academic performance compared to students with no knowledge of daylighting. Research and surveys in existing and newly constructed high schools were conducted to verify the results of this study. These design ideas and concepts could influence the architecture and design industry to advocate …

Re-Connecting: Revitalizing Downtown Clearwater With Environmental Sensibility, Diego Duran Jul 2010

Re-Connecting: Revitalizing Downtown Clearwater With Environmental Sensibility, Diego Duran

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Many downtowns in North America have been severed from the rest of the city and from the contextual relationship to their surroundings. Sundered from their context, the ecological characteristics of a site are frequently taken for granted, and the disengagement of its public spaces erodes the downtown's character as well as the urban fabric.

Downtown Clearwater has lost the vitality and vibrancy that once characterized it as a lively district. Because of recent developments in the downtown area, public spaces have been lost between parking lots, high rises and a small number of sporadic residential pockets. Some of the most …

Domestic Architectural Production In Northwest Mexico, Elizabeth A. Bagwell Jul 2010

Domestic Architectural Production In Northwest Mexico, Elizabeth A. Bagwell

Anthropology ETDs

This study examines the organization of architectural production at Cueva Bringas and Cueva el Aguaje, two prehispanic coursed-adobe cliff dwellings in the Northern Sierra (Casas Grandes) region of northeastern Sonora, Mexico. Since there are no archaeological models of the organization of domestic architectural production, an ethnographic study was completed to establish a set of expectations for this data set. The results of this study found that architecture is primarily built by groups whose members are not part of the household intending to occupy the structure. In addition, architectural production varies by gender of the producer, level of complexity, production step, …
