An Activity Promoting The Practice Of Quantitative Literacy For Pre– And In–Service Teachers Of Mathematics And Science, Timothy L. Sorey, Teri Willard, Duane Sholz
Numeracy
The purpose of this article is to describe a hands-on, laboratory activity that provided pre-service teachers in mathematics and science methods courses, and also some in-service mathematics teachers, with the opportunity to exercise quantitative literacy (QL) skills. The focus of the activity is electrical resistance, more particularly the resistance (in ohms) that is painted on small resistors by the use of color-coded bands, one of which is a band for % error. The activity consists of four parts. In the first, student teams familiarize themselves with the code, measure the ohmage of resistors for which the codes are visible, and …
Are Statistics Labs Worth The Effort?--Comparison Of Introductory Statistics Courses Using Different Teaching Methods, Jose H. Guardiola, Nadina Duran-Hutchings, Hassan Elsalloukh
Are Statistics Labs Worth The Effort?--Comparison Of Introductory Statistics Courses Using Different Teaching Methods, Jose H. Guardiola, Nadina Duran-Hutchings, Hassan Elsalloukh
Numeracy
This paper compares the academic performance of students in three similar elementary statistics courses taught by the same instructor, but with the lab component differing among the three. One course is traditionally taught without a lab component; the second with a lab component using scenarios and an extensive use of technology, but without explicit coordination between lab and lecture; and the third using a lab component with an extensive use of technology that carefully coordinates the lab with the lecture. Extensive use of technology means, in this context, using Minitab software in the lab section, doing homework and quizzes using …

Papermaking In Maine: Economic Trends From 1894 To 2000, Lloyd C. Ireland
Papermaking In Maine: Economic Trends From 1894 To 2000, Lloyd C. Ireland
Maine History
This essay reviews the major economic trends in Maine’s paper industry since the late nineteenth century. It sets the context at national and regional levels, offers a broad statistical picture of the industry’s production in Maine, and concludes with a focus on Maine’s “mill towns.” Paper production is a branch of a larger industry that converts primary fiber — logs, chips, wastepaper, rags, or market pulp — into paper.

The activity of the included five years’ worth of receipts was analyzed for both degree of idleness and extent of use. Analyses were conducted upon the collection of receipts as a whole and upon the collection disaggregated into broad subject categories and into Library of Congress (LC) subclasses. When reading the report to follow, one should keep in mind that statistics may sometimes mask as much as they reveal, especially when one is dealing with non-discrete category data. For example, several LC subclasses (e.g., HC = Economic Theory and Demography) cover multiple topical areas, so analysis at the LC …
Comparison Of Three Computational Procedures For Solving The Number Of Factors Problem In Exploratory Factor Analysis, Adam Vincent Piccone
Comparison Of Three Computational Procedures For Solving The Number Of Factors Problem In Exploratory Factor Analysis, Adam Vincent Piccone
Dissertations
Three computational solutions to the number of factors problem were investigated over a wide variety of typical psychometric situations using Monte Carlo simulated population matrices with known characteristics. The standard error scree, the minimum average partials test, and the technique of parallel analysis were evaluated head-to-head for accuracy. The question of using principal components-based eigenvalues versus common factors-based eigenvalues in the analyses was also investigated. As a benchmark, the commonly used eigenvalues-greater-than-one criterion was included. Across all conditions, the principal components-based version of parallel analysis was found to most accurately recover dimensionality using sample correlation matrices drawn from populations with …

Environmental Enforcement In Dire Straits: There Is No Protection For Nothing And No Data For Free, Victor B. Flatt, Paul Collins
Environmental Enforcement In Dire Straits: There Is No Protection For Nothing And No Data For Free, Victor B. Flatt, Paul Collins
Notre Dame Law Review
Those charged with drafting and enforcing our environmental laws have had to work with little or no information about whether or not these programs are actually working properly. There are a host of reasons for this, many of them, having to do with availability of data that can be examined empirically. Using newly available, data on state actions in environmental enforcement, and a new data set of state environmental expenditures which they created, the authors of this Article are able to examine for the first time the relationship between state environmental expenditures and the effectiveness of state environmental enforcement for …

The Fundamental Plane Of Accretion Onto Black Holes With Dynamical Masses, Kayhan Gültekin, Edward M. Cackett, Jon M. Miller, Tiziana Di Matteo, Sera Markoff, Douglas O. Richstone
Physics and Astronomy Faculty Research Publications
Black hole accretion and jet production are areas of intensive study in astrophysics. Recent work has found a relation between radio luminosity, X-ray luminosity, and black hole mass. With the assumption that radio and X-ray luminosities are suitable proxies for jet power and accretion power, respectively, a broad fundamental connection between accretion and jet production is implied. In an effort to refine these links and enhance their power, we have explored the above relations exclusively among black holes with direct, dynamical mass-measurements. This approach not only eliminates systematic errors incurred through the use of secondary mass measurements, but also effectively …
