Being Italian American: Performing Ethnicity In Atlanta, Stephen Murray
Anthropology Theses
What does it mean to be Italian American in Atlanta? While Italian Americans have lived in urban concentrations in parts of the United States for over a century, members of this ethnic group have been living in Atlanta only in small numbers and for a few decades. Considering theories of ethnicity and performance, this study investigates aspects of Italian American ethnicity in Atlanta. The thesis provides an ethnographic insight into what it means to be an Italian American in Atlanta.

Human Resources As A Source Of Competitive Advantage, Lee Dyer
Human Resources As A Source Of Competitive Advantage, Lee Dyer
Lee Dyer
[Excerpt] For business it's a tough world that's getting tougher. The reasons are familiar enough: global competition, deregulation, finicky and tough customers, concerned and demanding stockholders, and a dizzying pace of constant change. Rare indeed is the company which has found a comfortable niche in this chaotic world.

Crafting A Human Resource Strategy To Foster Organizational Agility: A Case Study, Richard A. Shafer, Lee Dyer, Janine Kilty, Jeffrey Amos, G. A. (Jeff) Ericksen
Lee Dyer
A decade ago, the CEO of Albert Einstein Healthcare Network (AEHN), anticipating a tumultuous and largely unpredictable period in its industry, undertook to convert this organization from one that was basically stable and complacent to one that was agile, “nimble, and change-hardy”. This case study briefly addresses AEHN’s approaches to business strategy and organization design, but focuses primarily on the human resource strategy that emerged over time to foster the successful attainment of organizational agility. Although exploratory, the study suggests a number of lessons for those who are, or will be, studying or trying to create and sustain this promising …
Toward A Strategic Human Resource Management Model Of High Reliability Organization Performance, Jeff Ericksen, Lee Dyer
Toward A Strategic Human Resource Management Model Of High Reliability Organization Performance, Jeff Ericksen, Lee Dyer
Lee Dyer
In this article, we extend strategic human resource management (SHRM) thinking to theory and research on high reliability organizations (HROs) using a behavioral approach. After considering the viability of reliability as an organizational performance indicator, we identify a set of eight reliability-oriented employee behaviors (ROEBs) likely to foster organizational reliability and suggest that they are especially valuable to reliability seeking organizations that operate under “trying conditions”. We then develop a reliability-enhancing human resource strategy (REHRS) likely to facilitate the manifestation of these ROEBs. We conclude that the behavioral approach offers SHRM scholars an opportunity to explain how people contribute to …
The Biomechanics And Evolution Of Shark Teeth, Lisa Beth Whitenack
The Biomechanics And Evolution Of Shark Teeth, Lisa Beth Whitenack
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Measuring the effects of morphology on performance, and performance on fitness, is necessary to gain a full picture of selection, adaptation, ecology, and evolution. The performance of an organism's feeding apparatus, of which teeth are an integral part, has obvious implications for its fitness and survival. Extant shark teeth encompass a wide variety of shapes, and are often ascribed qualitative functions without any biomechanical testing, employing terminology such as gripping, piercing, crushing, cutting, or tearing. Additionally, teeth also comprise the vast majority of the fossil record of sharks. Therefore to understand the evolution of the shark feeding mechanism, we must …

Structures And Energetics Of Silicon Nanotubes From Molecular Dynamics And Density Functional Theory, Amritanshu Palaria, Gerhard Klimeck, Alejandro Strachan
PRISM: NNSA Center for Prediction of Reliability, Integrity and Survivability of Microsystems
We use molecular dynamics with a first-principles-based force field and density functional theory to predict the atomic structure, energetics, and elastic properties of Si nanotubes. We find various low-energy and low-symmetry hollow structures with external diameters of about 1 nm. These are the most stable structures in this small-diameter regime reported so far and exhibit properties very different from the bulk. While the cohesive energies of the four most stable nanotubes reported here are similar (from 0.638 to 0.697 eV above bulk Si), they have disparate Young's moduli (from 72 to 123 GPa).

Psychological Science Faculty Works
The association between sensation seeking and visual selective attention was examined in 31 adults with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV). Sensation seeking was measured with Zuckerman’s Sensation Seeking Scale Form V (SSS-V). Selective attention was assessed with a perceptual span task, where a target letter-character must be identified in a quickly presented array of nontarget letter-characters. As predicted, sensation seeking was strongly associated (R2 = .229) with perceptual span performance in the array size 12 condition, where selective attention demands were greatest, but not in the easier conditions. The Disinhibition, Boredom Susceptibility, and Experience Seeking subscales of the …

Comparing The Efficiency Of Islamic Banks In Malaysia And Indonesia, Ascarya Ascarya, Diana Yumanita
Bulletin of Monetary Economics and Banking
This study measures and compares the efficiency of Islamic banks in Malaysia and Indonesia using Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA), which is a non-parametric and deterministic methodology for determining the relative efficiency. The intermediation approach will be applied. This study identifies the sources and the level of inefficiency of the inputs and outputs. The results show that the Islamic banking in Indonesia is more efficient than the one in Malaysia in all three measurements; the technical, the scale, and the overall efficiency. Technically, financing is one of the sources of inefficiency in Malaysia, while human resource is one of the sources of …
Development And Psychometric Evaluation Of The Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy Assessment Tool, Cindy S. Tofthagen
Development And Psychometric Evaluation Of The Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy Assessment Tool, Cindy S. Tofthagen
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is a common side effect of several chemotherapy drugs used for the treatment of many common malignancies. CIPN is both under-assessed and underreported and few self-report tools exist that measure CIPN. Existing instruments do not evaluate all of the multi-dimensional characteristics of neuropathic symptoms; intensity, distress, timing, and characteristics. The purpose of this descriptive, cross-sectional study was to develop and psychometrically evaluate a new self - report tool for CIPN, the Chemotherapy Induced Peripheral Neuropathy Assessment Tool (CIPNAT). Interviews with 15 patients with known CIPN guided development of the CIPNAT.
The CIPNAT is a 69 …

An Effective Approach To 3d Deformable Surface Tracking, Jianke Zhu, Steven C. H. Hoi, Zenglin Xu, Michael R. Lyu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The key challenge with 3D deformable surface tracking arises from the difficulty in estimating a large number of 3D shape parameters from noisy observations. A recent state-of-the-art approach attacks this problem by formulating it as a Second Order Cone Programming (SOCP) feasibility problem. The main drawback of this solution is the high computational cost. In this paper, we first reformulate the problem into an unconstrained quadratic optimization problem. Instead of handling a large set of complicated SOCP constraints, our new formulation can be solved very efficiently by resolving a set of sparse linear equations. Based on the new framework, a …

Modeling Video Hyperlinks With Hypergraph For Web Video Reranking, Hung-Khoon Tan, Chong-Wah Ngo, Xiao Wu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we investigate a novel approach of exploiting visual-duplicates for web video reranking using hypergraph. Current graph-based reranking approaches consider mainly the pair-wise linking of keyframes and ignore reliability issues that are inherent in such representation. We exploit higher order relation to overcome the issues of missing links in visual-duplicate keyframes and in addition identify the latent relationships among keyframes. Based on hypergraph, we consider two groups of video threads: visual near-duplicate threads and story threads, to hyperlink web videos and describe the higher order information existing in video content. To facilitate reranking using random walk algorithm, the …

Accelerating Near-Duplicate Video Matching By Combining Visual Similarity And Alignment Distortion, Hung-Khoon Tan, Xiao Wu, Chong-Wah Ngo, Wan-Lei Zhao
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
In this paper, we investigate a novel approach to accelerate the matching of two video clips by exploiting the temporal coherence property inherent in the keyframe sequence of a video. Motivated by the fact that keyframe correspondences between near-duplicate videos typically follow certain spatial arrangements, such property could be employed to guide the alignment of two keyframe sequences. We set the alignment problem as an integer quadratic programming problem, where the cost function takes into account both the visual similarity of the corresponding keyframes as well as the alignment distortion among the set of correspondences. The set of keyframe-pairs found …
Model-Driven Performance Analysis, Gabriel A. Moreno, Paulo Merson
Model-Driven Performance Analysis, Gabriel A. Moreno, Paulo Merson
Gabriel A. Moreno
Model-Driven Engineering (MDE) is an approach to develop software systems by creating models and applying automated transformations to them to ultimately generate the implementation for a target platform. Although the main focus of MDE is on the generation of code, it is also necessary to support the analysis of the designs with respect to quality attributes such as performance. To complement the model-to-implementation path of MDE approaches, an MDE tool infrastructure should provide what we call model-driven analysis. This paper describes an approach to model-driven analysis based on reasoning frameworks. In particular, it describes a performance reasoning framework that can …

Linking Justice, Performance, And Citizenship Via Leader-Member Exchange, James P. Burton, Chris J. Sablynski, Tomoki Sekiguchi
Faculty Peer-Reviewed Publications
While organizational justice continues to garner attention by researchers, why perceptions of justice influence a variety of outcomes is still in need of explanation. In this paper, we examine one type of social exchange process that may provide a better link between perceptions of fairness and important organizational outcomes. Specifically, we examine how leader–member exchange (LMX) affects the relationship between employee perceptions of fairness and supervisor-rated performance and organizational citizenship behaviors (OCBs). Data from our study demonstrates that LMX fully mediates the relationship between interactional justice and performance and OCBs. In addition, the results demonstrate that LMX moderates the relationship …

Scalable Medium Access Control For In-Network Data Aggregation, Jamie Macbeth, Majid Sarrafzadeh
Scalable Medium Access Control For In-Network Data Aggregation, Jamie Macbeth, Majid Sarrafzadeh
Computer Science: Faculty Publications
We present conflict-free and contention-based medium access control (MAC) protocols designed for resource-aware data collection in sensor networks. We are interested in the performance of these schemes when used in in-network data aggregation systems. We introduce a Listen-and-Suppress (LAS) MAC protocol paradigm which can conserve network and node resources and cut delays through the interaction between the constituent nodes. In LAS-TDMA and LASCSMA, nodes listen to the channel and suppress their transmissions and sleep if their data is not needed. Under these conditions, we compare conflict-free scheduling and random scheduling in a general setting along several performance metrics. We find …

It's turn of the century Ireland and things are changing throughout the island. Restless after years of British rule, Irish Patriots begin to stand up and take back their homeland. Jack Gerreghty doesn't think fighting is the answer, until he meets the love of his life, Rachel. Beginning 16 years before the Easter Rising, Manifesto tells a story of a battle for a country that refuses to give up and a love that cannot be defeated. Presented in a workshop format with a string quartet, Manifesto offers an opportunity to see new musical theatre followed by a brief talk-back with …
Alba Emoting: A Safe, Effective, And Versatile Technique For Generating Emotions In Acting Performance, Angela Katherine Baker
Alba Emoting: A Safe, Effective, And Versatile Technique For Generating Emotions In Acting Performance, Angela Katherine Baker
Theses and Dissertations
This thesis proposes that Alba Emoting™ is a safe, effective, and versatile technique of generating emotions for acting performance. Alba Emoting is safe because it resolves four major problems some actors experience while generating emotions for acting performance. These problems include, &ldqup;emotional hijacking,” “emotional hangover,” “emotional blockage,” and using emotional memories which are faded, incomplete, inconsistent, or full of mixed emotions. Alba Emoting solves these four problems through the help of certified trainers, the step-out procedure, and the emotional effector patterns, which allow actors consistent access to a large range of emotions. Alba Emoting is effective because it enables actors …

The Determinants Of Suppliers’ Performance In E-Procurement: Evidence From The Italian Government’S E-Procurement Platform, Gian Luigi Albano, Federico Dini, Roberto Zampino, Marta Fana
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Participation of small businesses in the market for public contracts is widely recognized as a key policy issue. It is also commonly held that the adoption of e-procurement solutions can be effective in pursuing such an objective. To this end, we analyze the transactions completed in the period 2004-2007 through the Italian Government’s e-procurement platform, that is, the marketplace managed by the Italian Public Procurement Agency (Consip S.p.A.). Although descriptive statistics indicate that micro suppliers are the most represented group of firms in the marketplace, our econometric treatment provides some evidence that the former are less successful than all other …

Software components and the technology supporting component based software engineering contribute greatly to the rapid development and configuration of systems for a variety of application domains. Such domains go beyond desktop office applications and information systems supporting e-commerce, but include systems having real-time performance requirements and critical functionality. Discussed in this paper are the results from an experiment that demonstrates the ability to predict deadline satisfaction of threads in a real-time system where the functionality performed is based on the configuration of the assembled software components. Presented is the method used to abstract the large, legacy code base of the …
