Age- And Sex-Specific Transformations Of Health Status Measures To Incorporate Death, Ann M. Derleth, Paula Diehr Jun 2006

Age- And Sex-Specific Transformations Of Health Status Measures To Incorporate Death, Ann M. Derleth, Paula Diehr

UW Biostatistics Working Paper Series

Introduction: Measures of health status and physical function do not usually include a specific code for death. This can cause problems in longitudinal studies because analyses limited to survivors may bias the results. One approach is to recode the status variables to include a reasonable value for death. One method that has been used is to replace each scale value with the estimated probability that a person with this value will be “healthy”. “Healthy” has been defined as being above a particular threshold on the variable of interest one year later, or alternatively as being in excellent, very good, or …

Perceptions Of The Impact Of Accountability On The Role Of Principals, James E. Lyons, Bob Algozzine Jun 2006

Perceptions Of The Impact Of Accountability On The Role Of Principals, James E. Lyons, Bob Algozzine

Education Policy Analysis Archives (EPAA)

Calls for accountability in America’s schools have created increased responsibilities for educational leaders. In this article, we describe and discuss a study of elementary, middle, and high school principals’ perceptions of the state-wide educational accountability program in North Carolina. The respondents indicated that the state’s accountability program has had its greatest impact on how they monitored student achievement, aligned the curriculum to the testing program, provided student remedial or tutorial opportunities, assigned teachers to grades levels or subjects, and protected instructional time. Views of some components, such as measures of school effectiveness, school safety standards, expectations and promotion standards for …

Department of Statistics Faculty Publications

Background

Gene expression microarrays allow the quantification of transcript accumulation for many or all genes in a genome. This technology has been utilized for a range of investigations, from assessments of gene regulation in response to genetic or environmental fluctuation to global expression QTL (eQTL) analyses of natural variation. Current analysis techniques facilitate the statistical querying of individual genes to evaluate the significance of a change in response, also known as differential expression. Since genes are also known to respond as groups due to their membership in networks, effective approaches are needed to investigate transcriptome variation as related to gene …

Ladisa, Lars E. Olson, Douglas Anthony Hettrick, David C. Warltier, Judy R. Kersten, Paul S. Pagel

Biomedical Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

Background

The success of stent implantation in the restoration of blood flow through areas of vascular narrowing is limited by restenosis. Several recent studies have suggested that the local geometric environment created by a deployed stent may influence regional blood flow characteristics and alter distributions of wall shear stress (WSS) after implantation, thereby rendering specific areas of the vessel wall more susceptible to neointimal hyperplasia and restenosis. Stents are most frequently implanted in curved vessels such as the coronary arteries, but most computational studies examining blood flow patterns through stented vessels conducted to date use linear, cylindrical geometric models. It …

Algan/Gan/Algan Double Heterostructure For High-Power Iii-N Field-Effect Transistors, C. Q. Chen, J. P. Zhang, V. Adivarahan, A. Koudymov, H. Fatima, Grigory Simin, J. Yang, M. Asif Khan Jun 2006

Faculty Publications

We propose and demonstrate an AlGaN/GaN/AlGaN double heterostructure (DH) with significantly improved two-dimensional (2D) confinement for high-power III-N heterostructurefield-effect transistors(HFETs). The DH was grown directly on an AlN buffer over i-SiC substrate. It enables an excellent confinement of the 2D gas and also does not suffer from the parasitic channel formation as experienced in past designs grown over GaN buffer layers. Elimination of the GaN buffer modifies the strain distribution in the DH, enabling Al contents in the barrier region well over 30%. For the AlGaN/GaN/AlGaN DH design, the 2D electron gasmobility achieved was 1150 cm2/V s at …

Assessing The Safety Impacts Of Access Management Techniques, Jeff S. Lewis Jun 2006

Assessing The Safety Impacts Of Access Management Techniques, Jeff S. Lewis

Theses and Dissertations

Access management techniques such as raised median installation and driveway consolidation improve safety conditions for motorists. Several locations where these access management techniques have been installed in the state of Utah were selected for analysis of the safety impacts. Although crash rates were not necessarily reduced as a result of the access management techniques, other safety improvements were observed. The raised medians generally reduced the more serious types of collisions, which resulted in a decrease in the severity of crashes. The fatality rates generally decreased as crashes became less severe. Because fatalities and the overall severity of crashes decreased, the …

Access To Audiences As A First Amendment Right: Its Relevance And Implications For Electronic Media Policy, Philip M. Napoli, Sheea T. Sybblis Jun 2006

Access To Audiences As A First Amendment Right: Its Relevance And Implications For Electronic Media Policy, Philip M. Napoli, Sheea T. Sybblis

ExpressO

When the issue of speakers’ rights of access arises in media regulation and policy contexts, the focus typically is on the concept of speakers’ rights of access “to the media,” or “to the press.” This right usually is premised on the audience’s need for access to diverse sources and content. In contrast, in many non-mediated contexts, the concept of speakers’ rights of access frequently is defined in terms of the speaker’s own First Amendment right of access to audiences. This paper explores the important distinctions between these differing interpretations of a speaker’s access rights and argues that the concept of …

Workplace Diversity Training: Evoking Change Or Reinforcing The Status Quo?, Patricia M. Thompson, Thomas V. Bettinger

Adult Education Research Conference

In order to effectively support diversity initiatives in our institutions or to develop workplace diversity programs, we need to first define and deconstruct the issues which impede diversity initiatives. The purpose of this roundtable is to discuss how we define diversity; the role social identity plays in supporting and hindering workplace diversity initiatives; the impact of organizational culture or monoculturism on diversity initiative; and ways to address the issues of dominance which undergird organizations.

Interdependent Costs Of Precaution, Tim Friehe Jun 2006

Interdependent Costs Of Precaution, Tim Friehe

German Working Papers in Law and Economics

Standard liability rules do not lead to efficient care choices by injurer and victim if precaution costs are interdependent. This result of Dharmapala and Hoffmann (2005) is shown to depend on role-type certainty. We allow for role-type uncertainty and demonstrate that standard liability rules can handle the complication of interdependent costs of care. Thereby, a context is identified in which uncertainty can further efficiency.

Economic Analysis Of Law And Economics, Oren Gazal-Ayal Jun 2006

Economic Analysis Of Law And Economics, Oren Gazal-Ayal

German Working Papers in Law and Economics

The academic world is wonderful. Like few other professionals, we can choose what we want to do and what questions we think are important, which in our line of work means choosing what topics we want to research. But what influences our choices? This paper examines what drives scholars to select Law and Economics (L&E) as a topic for research. It does so by implementing the methodology of many L&E papers – by assuming that regulation and incentives matter.

Legal scholars face very different academic incentives in different parts of the world. In some countries, the academic standards for appointment, …

Ah, Libraries: How I Love The Smell Of... Electronic Access?!, Mark Y. Herring Jun 2006

Ah, Libraries: How I Love The Smell Of... Electronic Access?!, Mark Y. Herring

Dacus Library Faculty Publications

In the olden days, we Baby-Boomers would walk into our university or college libraries and pause just long enough to take in that wonderful smells of high grade cowhide leather and aging papyrus before rushing off to study. There was something about opening any leather bound edition of anything and being transported by the smell to some distant land, not unlike Charles Swann in Marcel Proust’s famous French novel, A La Recherché du Temps Perdu, Remembrance of Things Past.
