A Decade Of Reflection: Early Childhood Care And Education In Ireland 1996-2006, Noirin Hayes, Siobhan Bradley

Conference Papers

You are welcome to the first seminar in a CSER series intended to consider aspects of early childhood education and care1 [ECEC] from a policy, research and practice perspective and promote discussion and debate. In this introduction to the seminar I want to outline some of the thinking behind the topic for today and present - with limited elaboration - a personal reflection to add to the discussion and debate. In choosing to reflect on the development and impact of early childhood education and care policy in Ireland it is no surprise that the decade 1996 - 2006 should act …

Engineering The Future: Staying Competitive In The Global Economy, Paul A. Camuti

Online Journal for Global Engineering Education

Maintaining and bolstering America's position as an innovation and technology leader requires aggressive, progressive and creative curricular changes in engineering education. Preparing future engineers in the Age of Globalization requires additional skill sets beyond traditional technical capabilities, drawn from the humanities, social sciences and, above all, foreign languages. The author discusses how Siemens Corporation has been navigating the opportunities and pitfalls presented by globalization by seeking out and developing "Renaissance Engineers."

Construction Trades Academy At Lakewood High School, Arthur Lang Nov 2006

Construction Trades Academy At Lakewood High School, Arthur Lang

Arthur Lang

Small Schools are schools within schools, autonomous of their district and the larger school building principal in which they reside. They are distinct from one another, focused and committed to equity. They are made up of an interdisciplinary team of teachers that share a few hundred or less students in common for instruction. Giving students an opportunity to engage in the construction industry in their home-town will integrate real-world skills into their study of mathematics and connect their lives to their schools and community, making achievment and graduation more meaningful.

Bioenergetic Analysis Of Female Volleyball, Christine Sjoberg Nov 2006

Bioenergetic Analysis Of Female Volleyball, Christine Sjoberg

Student Work

Volleyball is a demanding sport typified by repeated high intensity bouts of activity consisting of jumping, spiking, diving, and running. Practice sessions for collegiate level play generally last from two to three hours. The total energy requirement for extended practice sessions has not been directly measured and compared to dietary intake to assess whether collegiate athletes’ energy intake meets the energy demand of the sport. The purpose of this study was to establish the energy balance of female collegiate volleyball athletes during typical team training days. A bioenergetic analysis was conducted by directly measuring oxygen consumption (V 02) during actual …

English Language Learners And Technology: Applying Universal Design For Learning And The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol In The Evaluation Of Literacy Support Software, Susan M. Connolly Nov 2006

English Language Learners And Technology: Applying Universal Design For Learning And The Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol In The Evaluation Of Literacy Support Software, Susan M. Connolly

All Graduate Projects

The population of culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) students in U.S. schools has been steadily increasing. These students do not experience equal educational opportunity in U.S. secondary schools. CLD students need to develop English literacy as well as content knowledge to attain equal educational opportunity. Teachers of CLD students need techniques and tools which support CLD students in mastering the content expected of secondary school students while acquiring English literacy. The criteria for effective lesson design and delivery inherent in the Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol (SIOP) and the criteria for designing curriculum without barriers to access inherent in Universal Design …

Birth Order, Educational Achievement And Earnings: An Investigation Using The Psid, Jasmin Kantarevic, Stéphane Fabrice Mechoulan Nov 2006

Birth Order, Educational Achievement And Earnings: An Investigation Using The Psid, Jasmin Kantarevic, Stéphane Fabrice Mechoulan

Stéphane Mechoulan

We examine the implications of being early in the birth order, and whether there exists, within large families, a pattern of falling then rising attainment with respect to birth order. Unlike other studies using U.S. data, we go beyond grade for age and look at racial differences. Drawing from OLS and fixed effects estimations, we find that being first-born confers a significant educational advantage that persists when considering earnings; being last-born confers none. These effects are significant for large black families at the high school level, and for white families of any size at both high school and college levels.

Western Alumni, Class Of 2005 - Spring 2006 Survey Findings, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Sara Jones, Richard Bulcroft, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

Western’s first Alumni Survey was conducted in 1988; it’s development and administration was in response to the Higher Education Coordinating Board (HEC Board) requirement to survey graduates every biennially. Western was done so diligently and reliably since. Twenty years on, as academic concerns have changed, so has the survey; however, the original “fourteen common items” proscribed by the HEC Board have remained. Similarly, the administration of the survey adapted: from a paper-and-pencil only mail-out form to the current on-line and telephone method. Yet regardless of the type of administration, satisfactory response rates have been attained. The current report includes data …

Reflection In Action: Constructive Narratives Of Experience, Nilofar Vazir Nov 2006

Reflection In Action: Constructive Narratives Of Experience, Nilofar Vazir

Institute for Educational Development, Karachi

This paper examines narratives of experience from teachers’ lives. It locates teachers as academic constructors of knowledge and uses the cases of reflective practice and inquiry in the development of self‐knowledge. I explore teachers knowledge in light of my own understanding from literature, research findings on beginning teachers, reflections on my personal experiences; my development as a teacher overseas and in my country Pakistan. Most importantly as self‐reflection I offer Pakistan’s move to construct professional knowledge and my own attempt as a teacher educator to aspire towards that goal.

Revisiting Philosophy And Education In Landscape Architecture, M. Eaton Nov 2006

Revisiting Philosophy And Education In Landscape Architecture, M. Eaton

DRS Biennial Conference Series

There is a crisis in landscape architecture. Where, as a design discipline, the profession is meant to act as a mediator between culture and nature, an absence of continuous critical enquiry, both at a professional level and at an academic level, weakens it. Almost a decade has passed since I examined the role of philosophy and design in landscape architecture education, and from what I have witnessed as an educator, there is still a deficiency of rigour of inquiry. As such, one must ask: where is the leadership in landscape architecture, and are we remaining true to ourselves as designers, …

Assessing The Effects Of Parental Involvement On First-Generation And Second-Generation College Students, Terence Hicks Oct 2006

Assessing The Effects Of Parental Involvement On First-Generation And Second-Generation College Students, Terence Hicks

Faculty Working Papers from the School of Education

Few researchers have studied the effects that parental influence has on first-generation and second-generation college students. This lack of empirical knowledge prompted this investigation on the effectiveness of parental involvement on first- and second-generation college student performance.

A recent review of literature reveals that researchers have used different definitions of the "first-generation" concept (Bean&Metzner. 1985; Billson&Terry. 1982). Bean and Metzner (1985) examined the research on the correlation between parental education and the first-generation college student's persistence and reported that other researchers found equivocal results when examining this relationship. Billson and Terry (1987) argued, however, that the analysis performed by Bean …
