On Evaluating Density Driven Groundwater Flow In The Closed Basin, Aron M Habte Jan 2006

On Evaluating Density Driven Groundwater Flow In The Closed Basin, Aron M Habte

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

The hydrogeochemical cycle in the Pilot Valley, a closed basin, is subject to climate variability over a wide range of spatial and temporal scales over long period of time. Saturated and Unsaturated Transport Model (SUTRA) is employed in the Pilot Valley to simulate subsurface and density driven groundwater flow under various climatic and geologic conditions. A Maxey-Eakin method with coupled catchment model, aridity index and incomplete beta function for groundwater recharge distribution is integrated into the SUTRA model for various simulations. A Rayleigh number is used to analyze these circulation patterns of flow under variable climate and geologic conditions. The …

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Rumble Strips In Reducing "Ran-Off-Roadway" Vehicle Crashes, Vinay Kumar Vanapalli Jan 2006

Evaluating The Effectiveness Of Rumble Strips In Reducing "Ran-Off-Roadway" Vehicle Crashes, Vinay Kumar Vanapalli

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Single vehicle ran-off-roadway crashes are of significant concern in Nevada. The research efforts presented in this report summarize the evaluation of the effectiveness continuous shoulder rumble strips to reduce such crashes in Nevada. The efforts evaluated safety records on roadways in Nevada on which Continuous Shoulder Rumble Strips had been installed. Specifically, crash records involving "Single-Vehicle Ran-off-Roadway" crashes were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the Continuous Shoulder Rumble Strips treatment. The roadways studied include Interstate freeways, US Routes, and State Routes: 306 individual segments corresponding to a total of 1,303 centerline miles of roadways. Data for the period from …

Evaluating Educational Web Sites, Denber Rey S Cruz Jan 2006

Evaluating Educational Web Sites, Denber Rey S Cruz

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A rubric was created to compare and contrast Web sites based on four criteria: (a) technical aspect, (b) types of content available, (c) authority and, (d) accessibility. The rubric was designed to compare sites to one another. The sites were also grouped into categories: (a) higher education sites, (b) content sites, (c) commercial sites, (d) school districts. The categories were also compared to each other; To compare the sites to each other, a percentage score was given for each of the four criteria. A total percentage score was also given to each site. The score for all of the sites …

Evaluating The Effect Of Merit Aid As A Higher Education *Policy Tool Using Time Series Analysis, Michelle Johanna Nilson Jan 2006

Evaluating The Effect Of Merit Aid As A Higher Education *Policy Tool Using Time Series Analysis, Michelle Johanna Nilson

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Since 1991, seventeen states have dramatically altered the criteria they use to distribute student financial aid to include a larger proportion of merit-based awards. Across these states, the amounts and lengths of the awards vary. There are states, such as Georgia and Florida, which provide full tuition and fees for four or five years, depending on the program of study. In sharp contrast, Michigan's Merit Award Scholarship is a one time {dollar}2,500 award. States also differ in terms of the selection criteria used to award merit aid a quasi-experimental interrupted and pooled time series design derived from research on public …
