Developing countries as well as other member countries of the IMF have been encouraged to open up to foreign capital flows through the liberalization of their capital account transactions. Capital account liberalization is embedded in international standards and codes as best practice necessary for developing countries engaging in inter-governmental and non-governmental international relations. It also represents the systemic removal of administrative and legal controls on international capital transactions.

Economic Mobility Of Single Mothers: The Role Of Assets And Human Capital Development, Min Zhan

The Journal of Sociology & Social Welfare

This study examines the economic mobility of single mothers. It highlights the relationships between single mothers' financial assets and human capital development (educational advancement, job training, and work hours) with their economic mobility. Analysis of data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth (NLSY79) indicates that assets may help improve upward economic mobility. Assets, however, have differential impact on single mothers with different income levels. In addition, human capital development mediates the positive link between assets and the economic mobility for mothers living between the 100% and 200% federal poverty. Over the past 20 to 25 years small scale enterprises have exploded in the informal sector of the Nigeria's businesses. The informal sector study (CBN, NISEK 2000) showed that over 25,000 small scale enterprises were in existence in the agro industrial production sector of the economy during the year 2000. This paper proffers a model of funding called "Proof of Concept Fund" as a bridging credit facility to research institutes and small scale industrialist who would want to patent/franchise budding research findings to commercialization. As part of UMass Boston’s recent celebration to mark the inauguration of Chancellor Michael F. Collins, M.D., the Division of Corporate, Continuing and Distance Education (CCDE) hosted a “virtual symposium” featuring Robert B. Reich. Between April 24 and May 8, CCDE posted a streaming video and a downloadable audio file of a presentation that Professor Reich had delivered on April 11, 2006 at the national conference of the University Continuing Education Association. This talk was supplemented, on May 3, by a live teleconferencing Q&A session with Professor Reich and about fifty UMass Boston graduate students.

Software And Internet Industry Workers: Implications For The Future Of Work In Massachusetts, Sarah Kuhn, Paula Raymann

New England Journal of Public Policy

Those at the leading edge of the new economy — workers in software and Internet workplaces — can tell us something about the future of work in our new world. The authors have conducted a National Science Foundation-funded study of women and men working in IT. They find that while pay and the opportunity to do interesting work are major attractions, challenges facing this workforce include stress, difficulties balancing work and family, and concerns about employment security. While women and men reported similar attitudes and experiences in many areas, in others there were still significant differences.

Malaysia In The Global Economy: Crisis, Recovery, And The Road Ahead, Daniel E. Charette

This article offers an analysis of contemporary economic development in Malaysia, focusing especially on the causes and consequences of the 1997 Asian Financial Crisis. Malaysia offers an excellent case study in international development due to its role as an export-dependent developing country with a high degree of integration in the global economy. In attempting to determine why Malaysia was enveloped by a financial crisis in July of 1997, a two-level political economy approach is used to separate international policy influences from domestic influences. Economic Growth And Human Capital Development: The Case Study Of Nigeria, Moses F. Otu, Adeniyi O. Adenuga

The paper examines empirically the relationship between economic growth and human capital development using Nigeria data. Microeconomics variables such as Growth of real gross domestic products (RGDPG), capital expenditure (CE) on education. recurrent expenditure on education (RE), real gross capital formation (RGCF) was used to proxy physical formation, enrolment into primary (PRYE), post-primary (PPE) and tertiary (TERE) educational institutional were used to proxy human capital development. It found that investment in human capital, through the availability of infrastructure requirements in the education sector accelerates economics growth.
