Study Of Gas Density Profile About A Plastic Test Piece Under Vacuum, Hari Krishnan

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Nevada Shocker is a 540KV, 7O, 50ns, pulsed power device based on Marx Bank and Blumlein technologies. When this machine fires, the energy is funneled to a plastic insulator supported by two circular electrodes. The purpose is to study the surface breakdown properties of the plastic. It is hypothesized that a thin layer of gas exists between hard vacuum and the solid. The goal is to determine change in the gas profile and suggest how it may contribute to surface flashover; Stimulated desorption techniques such as photon stimulated desorption and thermal stimulated desorption are employed in characterizing the gas profile. …

Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid Inhibits Cytokine-Mediated Synergistic Induction Of Astrocytic Interleukin-6 Release: A Mechanistic Study, Grant Toshio Aguinaldo Jan 2006

Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid Inhibits Cytokine-Mediated Synergistic Induction Of Astrocytic Interleukin-6 Release: A Mechanistic Study, Grant Toshio Aguinaldo

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

A paucity of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) levels is thought to encourage cytokine release in Alzheimer's disease (AD). A mechanistic investigation into the GABA-mediated suppression of the synergistic release of interleukin (IL)-6 by IL-1beta and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha is presented. Preliminary results indicate that p38 and nuclear factor (NF)-kappaB are essential for the synergistic release of IL-6 by IL-1beta and TNF-alpha. Both IL-1beta and TNF-alpha are able to stimulate the phosphorylation of p38, however, no synergistic stimulation was observed. IL-1beta or TNF-alpha is able to stimulate the degradation of the NF-kappaB inhibitor, IkappaB-alpha, with no change in IkappaB-beta. Interestingly, TNF-alpha …

A Comparative Study Of Personality Traits Between Video Poker And Traditional Pull/Push Machines Players, Jungjin Hwang Jan 2006

A Comparative Study Of Personality Traits Between Video Poker And Traditional Pull/Push Machines Players, Jungjin Hwang

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Since the first spinning-reel slot machine was invented in 1895 by a German-born mechanic and installed in San Francisco taverns (Span 2003), machine games have enjoyed popularity among gamblers. Two main types of slot machines dominate the market: video poker machines, and the more traditional pull/push machines. Previous research suggests that video poker players and pull/push slot gamblers have different motivations for playing. In our study we looked at whether or not video poker and slot players have different personality traits as measured through Cattell's 16 Personality Factors. The findings showed that video poker players presented a more dominant personality …

The Diffusion Of Satellite Radio: A Study Of Earlier Adopters And Non-Adopters, Jasmine S Crighton Jan 2006

The Diffusion Of Satellite Radio: A Study Of Earlier Adopters And Non-Adopters, Jasmine S Crighton

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

This study examined the current and potential audience of satellite radio by using Roger's diffusion of innovations theory as a theoretical framework (Rogers, 1962, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2003). Survey research was conducted in June of 2006 to discover adopters' and non-adopters' perceptions of satellite radio and competing technologies, their socioeconomic characteristics, demographics, and mass media use; Results of the survey indicated that the average earlier adopters of satellite radio are nearly 32 years of age, earned an average gross annual income of {dollar}40,000 to {dollar}50,000, and had more formal education than non-subscribers. The average non-adopter of satellite radio was nearly …

Study Of Document Clustering Using The K-Means Algorithm, Meghna Sharma Gummuluru Jan 2006

Study Of Document Clustering Using The K-Means Algorithm, Meghna Sharma Gummuluru

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

One of the most commonly used data mining techniques is document clustering or unsupervised document classification which deals with the grouping of documents based on some document similarity function; This thesis deals with research issues associated with categorizing documents using the k-means clustering algorithm which groups objects into K number of groups based on document representations and similarities; The proposed hypothesis of this thesis is to prove that unsupervised clustering of a set of documents produces similar results to that of their supervised categorization.

Micro-Raman Spectroscopic Study Of The Corrosion Of Stainless Steel By Lead-Bismuth Eutectic, Brian D Hosterman Jan 2006

Micro-Raman Spectroscopic Study Of The Corrosion Of Stainless Steel By Lead-Bismuth Eutectic, Brian D Hosterman

UNLV Retrospective Theses & Dissertations

Lead-Bismuth Eutectic (LBE) has been proposed as a possible coolant and/or spallation target for the transmutation of nuclear waste. The corrosion of stainless steel from exposure to LBE must be understood if any transmutation scheme is to move forward. Annealed 316L, cold-rolled 316L, and D9 stainless steels corroded in a LBE environment were studied using Raman spectroscopy. Raman spectroscopy will allow identification of oxides within the corrosion layer. A micro-Raman system was constructed for these studies. The resulting Raman spectra, from annealed 316L samples show evidence for the formation of Fe3O4, instead of Fe2O3, within the corrosion layer. The main …
