This study examined whether there were relationships between students' perceptions of course-related interaction and their course satisfaction within the learner-centered paradigm in distance education. To study these relationships, the researcher developed the Students' Perceived Interaction Survey (SPIS) to examine nine separate hypotheses about the nature of course-related interaction. The present study shows the development of in-process tool condition monitoring systems utilizing signal decomposition technique, statistical data analysis, and artificial neural networks system. Two systems; (1) the system based on the multiple regression, (2) the system based on artificial neural networks with back-propagation learning algorithms were developed;The raw signals obtained from two sensors (tri-axial accelerometer and AE sensor) with different machining parameters and tool conditions were examined and decomposed into six components by utilizing a wavelet transformation. Controlled Drainage (CD), a subsurface drainage management system, has been researched in many regions. Previous research has reported CD to reduce subsurface drainage and as a result reduce nitrate loading. CD has been reported to have little effect on nitrate concentrations, so exploring alternative treatments to reduce these concentrations would be constructive. This research was intended to measure the effect of CD on surface runoff, crop yield, water table depth, and to document a biofilter's effect on nitrate concentrations. Can a succinct "synopsis" laboratory report format provide students with an equivalent learning experience to the lengthier, introduction/results/conclusion, "traditional" laboratory report format? A convenience sample of 56 Iowa State University industrial technology students was randomized into two groups; one was required to write five synopsis reports followed by four traditional reports and the other was required to write five traditional reports followed by four synopsis reports. Ammonia (NH3) emission is environmentally important because of its contribution to acidification of soil and water and increased nitrogen deposition in ecosystems. Ammonia emission rates (ER) of two commercial manure-belt (MB) layer houses with in Iowa were monitored for a full year. Ammonia ER showed considerable diurnal variation, but not as much in seasonal variation. Data from the 12-month monitoring revealed an annual average NH3 ER of 0.054 g d-1 hen-1(varying from 0.002 to 0.195 g d-1 hen-1) from the MB houses when the manure was removed daily. This dissertation describes efforts to move toward a completely integrated remote sensing and crop growth modeling tool for developing precision nitrogen management recommendations for corn. Aerial hyperspectral remote sensing imagery collected throughout the 2004 growing season was used to estimate corn plant stand density, and a machine vision system was used to map corn population on the ground. The objective of this study was to analyze the effectiveness of local exhaust ventilation on tritium surface contamination in a governmental maintenance and repair facility. Samples for this study were drawn from quarterly and suspected contamination swipes over a six year period and analyzed for tritium contamination utilizing a scintillation technique. The dependent variable selected was a measurement which determined whether tritium surface contamination was present.
