As the demand for niche-marketed meats increases, so does need for research in this area. One niche market that is being examined is pork raised in deep-bedded systems. There is also a call for alternative bedding materials. Farm-produced bedding sources such as cornstalks and various types of straws are commonly used. Swine farmers interested in enrolling in the growing niche markets for alternatively-reared pigs must usually farrow during the winter. The niche markets have a shortage of winter-born pigs because it is the most difficult time to meet the standards of no farrowing crates, use of bedding, and no antibiotics. The purpose of this study is to document alternative winter farrowing on four farms in southern Minnesota.

One alternative farrowing system that was evaluated earlier was the Swedish deep-bedded system using free-stall farrowing boxes and group lactation. The system was demonstrated at the ISU Armstrong Research Farm in southwest Iowa for 2 1/2 years. This system worked well with one exception—a high prewean mortality of 28%, primarily during the first several days after birth, when it was 80%. The purpose of this demonstration was to evaluate combining crated farrowing with bedded group lactation in an effort to reduce prewean mortality.

Triticale is a synthetic small grain that results from an intergeneric cross between durum wheat and rye. Triticale has shown potential as a feedstuff in swine diets. Producers who may find this to be an attractive crop may also raise swine in an alternative swine production system. The objective of the present study was to evaluate the effects of triticale-based diets on pork quality and finishing pig performance of pigs reared in deep-bedded hoop barns.

Ration formulation for dairy cows just prior to parturition must control the dietary cation-anion difference (DCAD) if hypocalcemia and milk fever are to be avoided. One key to reducing hypocalcemia is to avoid incorporation of high-K forages into the ration. The excessive K content of these forages can cause metabolic alkalosis in the cow and subsequently hypocalcemia and milk fever. Alfalfa and other cool-season grasses are often used in dairy rations. We propose to improve the fatty acid composition of beef by capitalizing on the natural genetic differences among animals. It is our thought that improvements in the healthfulness of the fatty acid composition of beef can be made while maintaining other positive attributes. Stearoyl-CoA desaturase is responsible for the conversion of 16:0 and 18:0 to 16:1 and 18:1, respectively, the two major monounsaturated fatty acids of bovine lipids.

The McNay ewe flock was moved from Beaconsfield to the McNay Research Farm in the fall of 1989. The flock has served as a resource for applied management and nutrition studies along with disease research. The flock is also used as a resource for producer education and to demonstrate proper midwestern production systems that can be applied to Iowa operations.

Infectious bovine keratoconjunctivitis (IBK), commonly known as pinkeye, is a contagious bacterial disease that affects cattle worldwide. It is characterized by inflammation of the conjunctiva, ulceration of the cornea, and excessive tearing. In severe cases, perforation of the cornea does occur, which can lead to permanent blindness. During the last three years, an incidence rate of over 40% has been observed in the Rhodes/McNay research herd (Figure 1). Johne’s disease caused by Mycobacterium avium subsp. paratuberculosis (MAP) results in chronic weight loss and eventual death in sheep as well as in other ruminants. The disease has spread throughout the U.S.sheep flock, and it is estimated that 10% or possibly more of the flocks in the U.S. are infected. Sheep can be infected and spread the organism for years before succumbing to the disease. Consumers are showing increasing interest in beef from cattle that are finished or fattened on grass rather than in a conventional feedlot. Also recently, Iowa has had a proliferation of plants that produce ethanol from corn. The by-product of this process is distillers dried grains with solubles (DDGS). The objective of this study was to feed beef cattle to market weight (or as near as possible) by grazing them on cool-season grass supplemented with self-fed byproduct pellets.
