Nearly every year, adverse weather and crop conditions result in lodged corn in a few fields in the state. Lodging may be caused by wind storm, stalk rot or other disease, rootworm activity, or some combination of these. Regardless, it is a frustrating situation. Combine operators need to accept that harvest will not be routine in these areas and recognize that extra time will be required.

Weight percentages change with variations in moisture content. Dry samples have larger percentages of protein, oil, starch, and fiber than wet samples. Calculation of these percentages on a moisture basis other than the actual moisture at the time of test is strictly a mathematical formula.

Soil variability plays a significant role in crop performance, especially in dry conditions, where spatial variability of soil texture can show the moisture shortage effect on plant stand variability across the field. Generally, soil is not uniform and immense spatial soil texture variability can be noticed across fields (see the June 12, 2006, ICM article (pages 169-171), What's the yield effect of uneven corn heights?). Soil texture is a key factor in influencing soil's water-holding capacity. Coarse-textured soils have a lower moisture-holding capacity due to high porosity and ability to drain excess water quicker than fine-textured soils.

Every fall and spring, producers are faced with tillage decisions for the next crop year. Generally, tillage--whether for corn or soybean--has shown limited advantage in yield and economic returns, except in few cases where drainage and field conditions are challenging. As preparations for spring field operations are underway, producers need to stop and think about the choice of tillage system, given the challenges faced with energy prices and the associated cost of conventional tillage operations.
