Simple Braids For Surface Homeomorphisms, Kamlesh Parwani Dec 2006

Simple Braids For Surface Homeomorphisms, Kamlesh Parwani

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

Let S be a compact, oriented surface with negative Euler characteristic and f:S→S be a homeomorphism isotopic to the identity. If there exists a periodic orbit with a non-zero rotation vector (p→,q), then there exists a simple braid with the same rotation vector.

Bis(1,2-DihydroxyBenzene) HexaMethylEneTetraMine, Philias Daka, Kraig A. Wheeler

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

The title binary complex, 2C6H6O2·C6H12N4, is constructed from hexamethylenetetramine, positioned about a twofold symmetry operator, and 1,2-dihydroxybenzene. Each of the four tertiary amine N atoms participates in O—H⋯N contacts that produce molecular strands that propagate along the c axis.

(Acetonitrile-Κn){2-[Bis(2-Pyridylethyl)Amino]Ethanol-Κ4n,N′,N′′,O}Zinc(Ii) Bis(Perchlorate) Monohydrate, Hong-Chang Liang, Marcel M. Hetu, Kraig A. Wheeler, Lev N. Zakharov, Arnold L. Rheingold Nov 2006

(Acetonitrile-Κn){2-[Bis(2-Pyridylethyl)Amino]Ethanol-Κ4n,N′,N′′,O}Zinc(Ii) Bis(Perchlorate) Monohydrate, Hong-Chang Liang, Marcel M. Hetu, Kraig A. Wheeler, Lev N. Zakharov, Arnold L. Rheingold

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

In the title compound, [Zn(C2H3N)(C16H21N3O)](ClO4)2·H2O, the ZnII ion is coordinated by two pyridyl N atoms, one amine N atom, and an ethanol O atom from the N,N′,N′′,O-tetradentate 2-[bis(2-pyridylethyl)amino]ethanol donor ligand. The fifth coordination site is filled by an acetonitrile N atom, and there is one solvent water molecule in the asymmetric unit. The 2+ charge of the cationic portion of the complex is balanced by two perchlorate counter-anions.

The title new diquinaldine derivative, C27H24N4, forms molecular assemblies organized by intermolecular quinoline π–π stacking [3.356 (3) and 3.440 (3) Å] and both inter- and intramolecular N—H⋯N hydrogen bonds [3.039 (3)–3.104 (3) Å and 129 (2)–172 (2)°]. The combination of such interactions provides readily definable contacts that propagate along each crystallographic axis.

In the title molecular salt, C21H23N2O2+·C9H8BrO3−·1.4H2O, the components are linked by intermolecular C—O−⋯H—+N and OW—H⋯O interactions.

Memory, Mythmaking, And Museums: Constructive Authenticity And The Primitive Blues Subject, Stephen A. King Jan 2006

Memory, Mythmaking, And Museums: Constructive Authenticity And The Primitive Blues Subject, Stephen A. King

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

This essay explores how museums, public memory, and authenticity intersect to privilege an understanding of the past. Reflecting White control over the promotion of blues music, the curators at the Delta Blues Museum, located in Clarksdale, Mississippi, employ two rhetorical strategies to satisfy the expectations of (White) tourists who share culturally specific memories of the blues. First, the museum's rhetorical depiction of blues artists reflects White fascination with the mythic image of the primitive blues subject. Second, the exhibit recreates an early 20th century Delta society to complement tourism goals to market the Mississippi Delta as America's last remaining “pure” …

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

A molecular salt of tricyanomethanide anion and a N,N9- dianisylphenazinium dication forms extended supramolecular assemblies that consist of unusual methoxy…methoxy and CMN…N+ intermolecular contacts.

In the first three experiments, subjects felt solid geometrical forms and matched raised-line pictures to the objects. Performance was best in experiment 1 for top views, with shorter response latencies than for side views, front views, or 3-D views with foreshortening. In a second experiment with blind participants, matching accuracy was not significantly affected by prior visual experience, but speed advantages were found for top views, with 3-D views also yielding better matching accuracy than side views. There were no performance advantages for pictures of objects with a constant cross section in the vertical axis. The early-blind participants had lower …

I Sing The Body Electric: Description Of An Innovative Health Promotion And Fine Arts Program For Adolescents, Kathleen Phillips, Julie Deitz, Mark Borzi, Gaye Harrison

Faculty Research and Creative Activity

I Sing the Body Electric (BODY ELECTRIC) is a fine arts and health promotion program that supports communication of healthy lifestyle choices among youth. BODY ELECTRIC connects youth in 27 high schools with health and education communities in the largest rural geographic education region in a Midwestern state. The three-phase prevention plan designed to increase resiliency and reduce risk behaviors among adolescents begins with biennial regional administration of the Youth Risk Behavior Survey, with added questions designed to identifying the top health concerns of area youth. In the second phase, these health concerns are crafted into prevention messages by youth, …
