Environmental, Chemical, And Genetic Reduction Of Ethylene Sensitivity In Crop Plants, Timothy J. Hudelson May 2006

Environmental, Chemical, And Genetic Reduction Of Ethylene Sensitivity In Crop Plants, Timothy J. Hudelson

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Ethylene is an endogenously synthesized plant hormone that dissipates quickly in field conditions and seldom exceeds five nmol mol-1. Ethylene can accumulate to 1000 times this level in closed environments. The best-known effects of ethylene are its impacts on fruit ripening and senescence, yet ethylene influences growth and development throughout the plant life cycle. At low, continuous concentrations (20 to 50 nmol mol-1), ethylene reduces yield of many plants. Clean-air treatment during critical stages of floral development, silver thiosulfate (STS), and 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) may delay flower senescence and reduce the detrimental effects of ethylene on peas …

Two New Resorcinarenes: A Pyridine & Acetic Acid Ligand For Metal Coordination And A Deep-Cavity Nitroquinoxaline Resorcinarene, Samantha Sizemore Vernetti Apr 2006

Two New Resorcinarenes: A Pyridine & Acetic Acid Ligand For Metal Coordination And A Deep-Cavity Nitroquinoxaline Resorcinarene, Samantha Sizemore Vernetti

Theses and Dissertations

Functionalizing the upper rim of resorcinarene-based cavitands allows a variety of compounds to be synthesized from a single scaffold. Using the upper-rim moieties as ligands for a variety of transition metal ions further increases the versatility of this class of host compounds. A new resorcinarene-based molecule functionalized with four pyridine and acetic acid ligands has been successfully prepared to explore the properties of metal-assembled complexes. To synthesize this compound, tetra(bromomethyl)cavitand was reacted with N-(2-pyridylmethyl)-N-ethylacetate amine to give ethyl acetate pyridine resorcinarene. Hydrolysis of the ester gave acetic acid pyridine resorcinarene (APRes) in good yield. Complexes with Cu2+, Co2+, and Zn2+ …

Statistical Methods And Experimental Design For Inference Regarding Dose And/Or Interaction Thresholds Along A Fixed-Ratio Ray, Sharon Dziuba Yeatts Jan 2006

Statistical Methods And Experimental Design For Inference Regarding Dose And/Or Interaction Thresholds Along A Fixed-Ratio Ray, Sharon Dziuba Yeatts

Theses and Dissertations

An alternative to the full factorial design, the ray design is appropriate for investigating a mixture of c chemicals, which are present according to a fixed mixing ratio, called the mixture ray. Using single chemical and mixture ray data, we can investigate interaction among the chemicals in a particular mixture. Statistical models have been used to describe the dose-response relationship of the single agents and the mixture; additivity is tested through the significance of model parameters associated with the coincidence of the additivity and mixture models. It is often assumed that a chemical or mixture must be administered above an unknown …
