A New Species Of Emballonura (Chiroptera: Emballonuridae) From The Dry Regions Of Madagascar, Steven M. Goodman, Scott G. Cardiff, Julie Ranivo, Amy L. Russell, Anne D. Yoder Oct 2006

A New Species Of Emballonura (Chiroptera: Emballonuridae) From The Dry Regions Of Madagascar, Steven M. Goodman, Scott G. Cardiff, Julie Ranivo, Amy L. Russell, Anne D. Yoder

Amy L. Russell

We describe a new species of bat in the genus Emballonura (Chiroptera: Emballonuridae), E. tiavato, from the dry forest regions of Madagascar. This species is distinguished from the only other member of this genus found on the island, E. atrata, and extralimital species based on a variety of external and cranial characteristics. Details of the distribution, phylogeny, and natural history of the two species of Malagasy Emballonura are presented.

Characterization Of Wastewater Streams From Bor Site, Zeljko J. Kamberovic Aug 2006

Characterization Of Wastewater Streams From Bor Site, Zeljko J. Kamberovic

Zeljko J Kamberovic

This paper presents full characterization of wastewater streams within Bor copper mine. Seven different wastewater streams were identified and fully characterized (origin, flow rate, chemical and physical properties) on basis of five year analysis. Taking into consideration chemical composition and flow rate of each wastewater calculations of metal loss through wastewaters was calculated. This characterization is the first step in investigations for best remediation technology of wastewaters all together or individual.

Daniel Pondella

To examine the role of previously described biogeographical boundaries in shaping phylogeographical relationships within and among two putative eastern Pacific sibling species, the flag cabrilla, Epinephelus labriformis and the Clipperton grouper, Epinephelus clippertonensis (Serranidae).

Endogenous Fractal Dynamics At Alpine Treeline Ecotones, George P. Malanson Dec 2005

Endogenous Fractal Dynamics At Alpine Treeline Ecotones, George P. Malanson

George P Malanson

Many of the hypotheses proposed to explain ecotones are based on an individualistic paradigm and are essentially static. While they include local feedbacks, they ignore the interactions between pattern and process across scales. These feedbacks in ecotones are nonlinear in nature and complicate the relations of pattern and process in vegetation, which, combined with observed fractal patterns, suggests a complexity science approach to investigate ecotone dynamics. A cellular automaton of alpine treeline, including nonlinear, local, positive, and negative feedbacks in tree establishment and mortality, as reported in field studies, is used as a model system. Fourier analysis of simulated alpine …

Size Selectivity Of Purse Seines In The Southern Philippines Multispecies Tuna Fisheries, Michael A. Rice, Joseph T. Dealteris, Samuel E. Resma Dec 2005

Size Selectivity Of Purse Seines In The Southern Philippines Multispecies Tuna Fisheries, Michael A. Rice, Joseph T. Dealteris, Samuel E. Resma

Michael A Rice

The multi-species Philippine tuna purse seine fishery targets three tuna species: skipjack (Katsuwonus pelamis), yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) and bigeye tuna (Thunnus obesus). These are highly migratory pelagic fishes that grow to different maximum lengths and weights. At present there is no mesh size regulation specific to the fishery in the Philippines although tuna purse seines generally use 8.9cm (3.5 in) mesh size in the bunt of the net. An empirical analysis was conducted to compare the catches of purse seine nets with two different mesh sizes in the top portion of the bunt: 8.9cm and 12.7cm. Field measurements of …

Evaluation Of Eelgrass Mitigation And Fishery Enhancement Structures In San Diego Bay, California, Daniel Pondella Ii Dec 2005

Evaluation Of Eelgrass Mitigation And Fishery Enhancement Structures In San Diego Bay, California, Daniel Pondella Ii

Daniel Pondella

To offset habitat loss and increase fishery production, an eelgrass mitigation habitat was completed in San Diego Bay, California in 1997. This mitigation effort consisted of the transplantation of eelgrass, Zostera marina L., in the western portion of the bay. In addition to the establishment of a new eelgrass bed, four enhancement reefs made of either quarry rock or concrete rubble were created to further enhance fishery stocks and the area's ecosystem. Two design criteria and a direct comparison between quarry rock and concrete reefs were examined in this 5-yr pilot program. The newly created eelgrass habitat quickly performed at …
